Hey everyone ... just going to let the room fill up and we'll get going.
Jaff

Should the Giants try to go after someone like Keon Broxton instead of trying to sign someone like Lorenzo Cain and lose a draft pick?
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
Y'know, the Giants' offseason remains a big mystery at this point. Some folks (esp the local media) seem to be suggesting they will be looking for those kinds of moves. Get a little younger, try to find some diamonds in the rough without spending big money.
Others (national media) think they will go for broke.
2:13
I do think it would be more sensible to try a middle road, but that'll mean accepting the odds are against true contention. Going for broke, though, has a big risk of leaving the team in need of a rebuild.

Does Stanton get traded?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
If they are at all serious about getting payroll to $90MM, he almost has to be.
2:14
It is theoretically possible to get there without it, but that would mean gutting the roster so much that it would probably make little sense to hang onto him.
Volquez & Chen & Prado contracts are major obstacles.

Is it in the Padres' best interest to really go for a legit tank next season, or should another 70ish win season be their goal?
Jeffrey Todd
2:15
They are pretty committed to much of their roster, so they are going to get whatever record it produces.
2:16
I don't think they will go wild trying to put veterans around the young core just yet, obviously. But I also don't think they ought to be scraping the bottom of the barrel with all their moves. It's probably time to begin climbing the ladder a bit.
Matt
2:16
White Sox add Hector Santiago and Chris Tillman along with blaine boyer and Jesse Chavez?
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
Sure. And sign 6 other relievers to minor-league deals.
Dan
2:17
Who is the front runner for Stanton ?
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
Dodgers if they want him. They have done significant deals with Miami in the recent past, too.
Brock
2:18
Do you envision rebuilding teams signing 2nd tier bullpen arms like Pet Neshek and Luke Gregerson?
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
Without knowing for sure, I'd assume those types of players would rather play for contenders. They have already earned a lot and will get paid by a contending team, so why go to a second-division club for what might be one of your last seasons?
Nick
2:18
Do you think Weaver Fernandez and Grichuk would be enough to get Stanton depending on salary?
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
Would depend entirely on salary considerations, but it generally it would be a huge win for the Marlins to land a pitcher like Weaver. Guess that'd be a surprise to me, but perhaps if the Cards take on all of his 2018 salary but save in future seasons it could be arranged?

Do you see the Rox signing any SP to provide some veteran leadership to their young rotation?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
Just writing up their outlook now. I tend to think they will not add a starter, in the sense of signing a guy to the rotation. They could, but that'd mean bumping Hoffman, Senzatela, and Anderson to pen/AAA. And who are they going to get for a reasonable rate of pay?
2:21
I think they will focus resources on the pen, catcher, and first base. Can grab some minor-league FA depth in the rotation, though it'll be hard to attract such players.

Think the A's interest in Yelich is smoke anf mirrors?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
I'm having a hard time seeing who would benefit from putting that out there, really. And I can imagine it. How serious are they, though? I do think the Marlins will put a steep price tag on Yeli. Note that they are sending out word that they aren't really even listening to offers on him at this point.
Travis Shaw
2:23
What kind of deal would it take to lock me up long term?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
Don't see the Brewers doing it unless it's a really appealing price. (As was Anderson.) They offered VIllar a 20-mil range type of deal, if I remember correctly. Shaw is only a year away from arb and the homers will earn him some money, but as with Villar there's risk for him, too. Maybe he could draw a bit larger guarantee b/c of his theoretical arb earning power, but I don't see why MIL would commit to him if it can't get a genuine bargain.
Alex
2:25
Would Cozart move to 3B if the Braves signed him to play there?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
We don't know if he has strong preferences. But he's one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball, so it'd be a shame.
Oren
2:25
Might Steve Pearce be a good fit for the Mets? I imagine the Jays don't mind moving him, and he can help the Mets as a OF/1B who fits in a platoon with Smith or one of the LH-outfielders.
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
Seems like a useful addition, yeah, but he makes sense for the Jays for the same reason. Could be wrong but I feel like they would rather just hang on to him.
2:27
There is a somewhat similar player available in FA in Howie Kendrick.
He hasn't played first but I don't see why he couldn't; plus you probably feel a little better using him elsewhere in the infield than you would with Pearce.
I'm loving this new class of bat-first utility player btw.

Is Jay Bruce to Toronto either the easiest or laziest prediction to make?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
We did pick him to go there, but it wasn't lazy, I can assure you. (Not that you are suggesting we were, or that we're the only ones predicting that.) I think there are other very strong possibilities for Bruce.
2:30
That said, the other best fit was probably the Indians sans Brantley; obviously, now that he's back, it seems less likely Bruce will stay in Cleveland.
Arte Moreno
2:30
Why does MLBTR not see the Angels as a potential Giancarlo Stanton trade suitor? They have money left to spend and need to maximize Trout's prime. Obviously it is a very low percentage chance but they are more in the mix than a team like Minnesota or Seattle one would think.
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
Think they already made their move with Upton. They can still fit a bat or two in the infield (esp if they are ready to move on from Cron), for waaaay less commitment. Also ... amply arguable they still need pitching.
2:32
Just had to draw a line somewhere with how many teams to fully consider. Angels, Brewers, heck the Mets ... I don't know, I guess you can squint and see it. Just felt a smidge less likely than the other, already unlikely teams I covered.
