Why does everyone say the mariners need relief pitchers? They have Anderson and Sloan pounding on the door for their 1st cup of coffee
Mark P
9:00
Anderson and Sloan are totally unproven at the MLB level.  Obviously they have a ton of potential and I do in fact expect Seattle to have them both in the majors before season's end, but it's asking a lot of these youngsters to debut them in the Show and ask them to immediately contribute high-leverage innings in a pennant race.
Bringing an experienced reliever into the pen would boost the Mariners' relief corps while lessening the pressure on Anderson/Sloan

what does the next Arraez contract look like? 4 years 85? 5 years at 100mil?
Mark P
9:02
Nowhere near that.  Better 2B defense helps, but teams still have plenty of questions about his overall skillset.

Arraez getting three years in the $40MM range is far more realistic than your suggested figures
Very confused

how do you explain cleveland having the third most wins in the AL at the break? And dont blame the al
Mark P
9:03
They're a very competent organization that usually finds a way to contend, year after year

With so many teams still within striking distance of playoff spot, do you agree with me that there are only 5 teams that are going to be sellers?
Mark P
9:06
It'll be a much higher number than that.  If one of the teams on the outskirts of the race has a seven-game losing streak or something, they'll throw in the towel and turn to selling.

What might happen this year is that a lot of teams will both buy and sell, rather than slotting distinctly into one category or another.  We just saw something akin to this with the Gonzalez/Eisert trade, as the White Sox did some building for the future and shedding of expendable parts before (probably) looking to buy closer to August 3

is freddy getting 7-8 years on his next deal? how does this season impact his FA market and what teams might look to sign him?
Mark P
9:10
No chance does Peralta land that kind of deal.  I wouldn't be shocked at this point if he accepts a qualifying offer from the Mets, actually.  I could see Peralta in a Zac Gallen-esque scenario where he rejects the QO and then just re-signs for basically the same money, so he might opt to just take the QO up front to avoid the uncertainty of free agency (especially with the lockout looming)
9:11
The risk there would be that taking a one-year offer puts Peralta back into the market during a 2027-28 offseason that may be quite different for free agents, depending on how the next CBA plays out.  But, that same risk exists if he ends up with a shorter-term contract anyway.

Is there any truth to the rumors James Wood isn’t untouchable?
Mark P
9:12
Maybe in the sense that no player is ever "100 percent" untouchable, if another team makes a large enough offer.  But at this point, Wood is certainly in the 99.9% untouchable range.

Chances Tigers hold on to Skubal if they can get up to around 3 games out of the division by the deadline
Mark P
9:13
If they're that close, Skubal is staying put
Great user name, btw

What is your projection for Roch Cholowsky? How soon can sox fans expect to see him in the majors? Does he seem like a cornerstone piece for the team?
Mark P
9:15
I'm not at all an expert on draft scouting, but all reports indicate that Cholowsky is a solid high-floor type of player at the very least.  Since he's already played a lot of college ball, it's not out of the question he's in Chicago before 2027 is over, but I'll go with 2028 as a projection date for now

Do you think the marlins are going to make a big/massive all in move at the deadline, if yes then who is the most likely target?
Mark P
9:20
Miami's not making that kind of move, but I do think they will be buyers.  Pitching (either back-end rotation help or the pen) adds are likely, and maybe still a bat of some type for the outfield
Guardians

What does cooper ingle fetch
Mark P
9:22
He'd draw a lot of interest, but it also isn't Cleveland's style to move a notable prospect at the deadline.

It would be kind of funny if the Guardians continued to double down on their defense-first approach to catching by developing a good-hitting catching prospect and then immediately trading him as soon as he reached the bigs
Devil Rays
9:25
If Detroit is not in contention and decide to trade Skubal does Tampa go “all in” and make a move for him?  What would be the cost in your opinion?
Mark P
9:27
The Rays are another team that generally doesn't take a big swing at rental players like Skubal.  That said, if there was ever a year to do it, maybe it's a season without any clear AL favorite and when your new owner is itching to make a big splash.

Is winning a division a big deal anymore?
Mark P
9:28
Yes, particularly if it means getting a first-round bye

Would the Nats be crazy enough to try and cash in on Luis Garcia’s hot streak and trade him at the deadline for premium talent?
Mark P
9:31
Garcia is only arb-controlled through 2027.  If the Nats are more firmly out of the race by the deadline, I can absolutely see them trying to sell high.

And, Garcia's peripherals have been so good that it doesn't look like just a flash in the pan.  If I'm another team in need of a 1B bat, Garcia is an interesting name to consider

Project Hail Mary or Disclosure Day?

PHM by a wide margin.  I was pretty underwhelmed by Disclosure Day.

Why the hesitation to bring 2 stud M's pitching prospects into a penent race? -Trey
Mark P

Sloan and Anderson have yet to pitch even in Triple-A ball. Penciling them in as key pieces of a contender's bullpen is asking a lot.

Baseball is so fun, but I am worried a work stoppage/lockout will take all the wind out of the sails. Is there hope?
Mark P
9:36
The lockout is 100 percent happening.  The issue is whether or not the lockout will stretch into the regular season and actual games will be lost.

If it's a replay of 2021-22 and the season is just delayed a week by a lockout, fans aren't likely to mind (some may not even notice or care).  Once actual baseball games start getting canceled, it's a real bad look, and you're right that it would be a big setback for a sport that has been having a bit of resurgence in popularity over the last few years

Predictions for where these players end up? Tyrone Taylor, Weaver, Manaea, Lindor and Polanco
Mark P
9:40
Lindor's contract is immovable, and Polanco has zero trade value.  Taylor might be moved for a spare part prospect, or as a throw-in as part of a larger deal.  Manaea has some trade value and I wouldn't be entirely shocked if he's dealt, but again, the Mets might want him as they endeavor to win in 2027.

Weaver is anyone's guess for a trade landing spot, as plenty of clubs figure to have interest in his services.  I wouldn't rule out the possibility that New York just keeps him, but there's logic in selling high on a leverage reliever.

Shouldn’t the Braves try to package Acuna with Riley? That way they would be free of 30 million per season. They’re never be able to afford Acuna. Besides, do they really want a superstar that plays an average of 50 games per season?
