Domin-o so few moves
2:32
Who do you expect to be the first big domino to fall igniting hot stove season?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Guess I still feel Stanton is most likely to be the first big domino. But less confident in that than I was a few weeks ago.
Braves
2:34
Matt Adams is a goner, Jim Johnson is a goner.  Next Brave off the list...  Markakis, Kemp or the field?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Does Adonis Garcia count?
Otherwise I'll take Kemp.
David
2:35
Do you think the Astros will go for Brad Hand? Also, do you think that Mike Fiers will be traded?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
'Stros should absolutely be going after Hand. But others will, too.
I guess I can see enough value in Fiers that I think another team will want the contract. Phillies would make sense.
Helps that he essentially comes with an option year (arb control).
Ohtani
2:36
Was there a deadline to respond set for the questionnaire sent out to all the teams on Ohtani?
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
It's in one hour. You better run to get this turned in on time.
I do remember sprinting to turn in law school exams. Those were the days.
2:37
In seriousness, I actually don't know but would expect there was some kind of softly presented deadline.
RedTed
2:37
Regarding Ohtani, the relatively low salary he'll garner, and the disparity between the 30 teams remaining funds:  how do you think MLB would view a fan-driven "GoFundMe"-like approach to pay Ohtani to select their team???
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
There are lots of reasons why this won't happen, but I think it should. Well-conceived idea.

2:38
With Scott Kingery emerging for the Phillies, Cesar Hernandez looks like an obvious trade candidate. But it's been pointed out that the 2B market is really robust, and there may be more supply than demand. Do you think the Phillies will hold tight and get their package, end up keeping Cesar and figuring it out from there, or dealing him for less than they would hope?
Jeffrey Todd
2:40
Advantage in Cesar is he's cheap and ought to remain that way through arb. Teams will like the idea of filling that need and leaving payroll available for other needs. But ... depends upon how anxious the Phils are to sell him. Yes, there are prospects coming. But none are certain things and you could always mix and match. I expect they have a reasonably high floor on what they'd take -- certainly don't have to deal him now.

I get and understand the narrative the giants are tapped out and im not a fan of their team but if they really wanted to they are capable of spending well above the tax for a year or two no ?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
For me it's not about going over the lux tax for a couple years, it's about the possibility of being caught with a bunch of ugly long-term commitments. They aren't there yet, but it only takes a few bits of poor fortune and the more big deals you have out to older players, the more rolls of the dice you have to survive.

2:41
if Adams hats traded, whats your guess on where he's going?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Really a matter of whether an AL org really likes him. Could see teams looking to do more with less -- Rays, Indians, A's, Royals -- having interest. He's not that expensive and he doesn't have to be an everyday guy to fit -- he could spend some time at first and DH for teams that want to mix in a righty bat to those spots as well. Could also imagine the White Sox taking a flier here if they intend to move Abreu.
2:44
But it's equally likely he's just non-tendered.
(And no, I didn't closely examine each of those teams. Just the types of orgs that could work if they decide to go for a cheap and solid asset here and use resources elsewhere.)
Al avila
2:44
Could I get a top 100 prospect back in a Shane Greene trade?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
I'll guess no. Need to see a little bit more extended success.
Rick
2:45
As rocky as Ken Giles was in the post season, do you think the Astros search for a new closer for 2018 or do they hope he continues to mature?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
Think they will definitely be after high-end late-inning arms. Perhaps more than one. But it doesn't necessarily have to be a capital-C Closer.
Kate Upton
2:46
What will the astros get for Mike Fiers?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
Don't get your hopes up, Kate.
Justin
2:47
Morrow or Kintzler - who gets more $$$
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
The former, by a fair margin.
Giancarlo
2:47
Miami is thinking of sending me to the Giants for 2 top prospects, Joe Panik and 85% of my remaining contract.   Seems light.
Craig
2:47
Is the reported Stanton for Cash deal something marlins just put out there so other clubs would make their best offers prior to next weeks meetings?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
There are elements of the phrasing of the report that make one suspect it came from the Marlins' side. Kind of eyebrow raising to make that sort of info known, but ... there could be incentive to draw other offer, yeah.
2:50
My own pet theory remains that the Marlins are hoping to deal with Stanton early-ish so they have time to explore other options. They want to hold onto some of their best other players and even add some young pitching. That's ambitious. Only hope of walking some kind of tightrope is to clear that major payroll hurdle and spend a lot of time working out deals involving other assets that right-size the payroll and keep a decent, young team on the field.
Drew Pomeranz
2:51
Should the Red Sox sign an extension (and what might that look like) or should they let him walk after 2018 season?
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
Doesn't seem like a very likely candidate to me. Not so good or necessary to the team that they feel a need to do it. And he has some FA upside so he shouldn't be desperate.
Ethan
2:52
Are the Nationals not going to make a big move during FA? Doesn't seem very likely at this point
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
It is very possible the Nats will swing a big trade or signing. I don't think they are certain to by any means, but I don't think anything has happened to make that "not likely."

Why is Gyorko so undervalued?
