Do teams make any sort of substantial (relative to payroll) amount of money going deep in the playoffs? Wondering with the playoff push and sorta kinda seeing the light at the end of the tunnel on Yelich makes it more likely they sign Contreras.
8:23
Do you think the results of the this series impact what the Brewers do with Contreras at all? (I still think the "they trade their stars" narrative only applies to pitchers, they kept Adames after all, and that they have a far better chance of signing Wild Bill than people give them credit for)
Mark P
8:25
The Brewers undoubtedly are generating plenty of extra revenue from this playoff run, so it's possible this factors into their thinking vis a vis Contreras.

I'm not sure if it translates into extending him, but at least the team might just keep him through 2027 to take another run at a championship.  If Contreras then leaves in free agency so be it, but under the next CBA, probably some compensation would still come back Milwaukee's way
In all likelihood, the Brewers will see how the next CBA plays out (and, y'know, the World Series) before deciding on Contreras

Twins fans are trying to read the tea leaves on the “new guy’s” (the newish control person from the same Pohlad family owners) comments about raising payroll and building more aggressively. As a writer covering the league not team-specifically, (a) do you buy it? (b) if so, what’s the level of splash you can see this org making?
Mark P
8:30
We've already seen evidence that Tom Pohlad is serious about winning, and (at least by Twins standards) spending more aggressively.  Obviously time will tell if the club indeed continues to build and focus on winning, but I have no reason for now to doubt Pohlad at his word.

  1. Most owners genuinely do want to win, it's just a matter of how much they'll willing to invest in such a push (or how competent they are in their investments)
  2. Minnesota fans had soured so heavily on the Twins that Pohlad recognized that things were really getting dire, and a turn-around was needed in the on-field product.
  3. The new investments from the minority owners erased a lot of the team's debts, and made raising payroll more financially feasible

Will the Cardinals finally fire Oli Marmol?
Mark P
8:32
Marmol just signed an extension last spring, and the Cards overachived in the first year of their rebuild.  Ergo, he isn't going anywhere.

I admit to being a little surprised that Marmol was kept on, but Bloom clearly trusts him to help guide the Cards through this rebuild phase

Did you miss the Adell trade talks now that you've mentioned him?
Mark P
8:33
But now we're in the phase of Adell's career where he might be on the move relatively often.

What would it cost for the Red Sox to unload Yoshida? Maybe 10mil?
Mark P
8:36
Yoshida is owed $18MM for the 2027 season.  If he was a free agent this winter, it's possible he might not even land a guaranteed contract, or at most something like a one-year, $3MM deal.

So, the Sox will need to be eating basically all of Yoshida's deal to facilitate a trade.  A release just seems more likely.

Is there anyone worth getting excited that the giants could or perhaps will likely go after?
Mark P
8:38
It's not the most enthralling free agent class, but there are plenty of starters and relievers that should appeal to a Giants team that badly needs pitching. While the club is still fundamentally opposed to longer-term pitching contracts, the need is great enough that ownership should be willing to bend to land a front-of-the-rotation arm.

Would Christian Yelich and or Brandon Woodruff retire  if the Brewers win the World Series?
Mark P
8:40
Yelich isn't walking away from two more years on his contract. Back in the summer when it seemed like Woodruff was getting surgery, he was adamant about coming back in 2027, so I doubt a ring would halt those plans

Who you got the rest of the way in the World Series? Brewers finish it off or Rays make the comeback?

The Halo's finally breach the playoffs within the next 10 years. Over or under?
Mark P
8:42
I'd be pretty shocked if the Angels DIDN'T make the playoffs in the next decade.  Ten years is a long time, and if anything, it's an anomaly in a sport with an ever-expanding playoff field that the team has been this bad for this long.

Think rushing or de Paula get traded?
Mark P
8:44
Zero chance De Paula is moved.  Even if the Dodgers don't trust his defense, he'll at least get a chance in left field to see what he can do (likely after a Hernandez trade).

No reason for L.A. to move Rushing yet, and his value is naturally down in the wake of his elbow surgery. Teams are going to want to ensure he's healthy and able to throw before making a decent offer.

Do the Tigers trade Riley Green with McGonigle and Clark the new faces?
Mark P
8:46
Greene only reached arbitration eligibility last winter, so he's controlled through 2028.  While there hasn't been much buzz about an extension, there's zero reason why a Tigers team that wants to contend should be moving arguably its best player right now.

Is there much chance the Reds would go after a Taylor Ward or Trent Grisham before the lock out?  Or try to make a trade with a team like Kansas City?  Thanks for another great season!!
Mark P
8:47
These feel like the kinds of outfield moves that the Reds would make in their price range, as much as Cincy fans would want something bigger
8:48
Of the two, I'd prefer to have Ward, and maybe playing in Cincinnati would get his power going again
Mookie
8:50
the first year the dodgers moved me to short, I stopped hitting. When they moved me back to the outfield, I started hitting again.  The last two seasons at short, Mookie hasn’t really hit like he used to.  Should he go back to the outfield to see if he starts hitting again?  The hard part is that he is a great shortstop.
Mark P
8:51
L.A. is so loaded in young outfield depth (plus they have Tucker, Pages, Teo already) that it just makes more sense for Betts to remain at shortstop.

Will Judge be back as a MVP winner next season? Or will he start regressing?
Mark P
8:53
If Judge stays healthy, I'm pretty sure he'll still be an MVP candidate.  Of course, the question is a full and healthy season can still be a given at this point in his career

Seeing there is a reasonably high chance that Lowe prices himself out of the Pirates, could they look for a Jazz Chisholm or a rebounding Johnathan India?
Mark P
8:56
If I was a Pirates fan, I would be very disappointed by replacing Lowe with India.  Jazz isn't a perfect player by any means, but I'd much rather take him over India.

Chisholm might take a one-year, "prove it" type of contract to set himself up for a longer-term deal next offseason.  If that's the case, Pittsburgh is at least a possibility for such a deal in their budget.

Is it time for padres to return Tatis to SS? He seems to want to be back in the dirt. Move X to 2nd and Jake to LF and resign France for 1B. Or make a trade cause this group has been together for years and hasn’t broken through yet.
Mark P
8:58
Tatis playing shortstop is probably not happening, but more time at 2B is certainly a possibility.
8:59
The real problem is that the Padres are kinda stuck with Bogaerts and Cronenworth, so if anything, those two should be getting the short shrift when it comes to positions and playing time

If the DBacks do wish to move Ketel Marte (and after his controversies and AZ-native Demetrios Crisantes now waiting in the wings, it seems quite possible), AND Ketel is open, are the Jays the ideal fit? Can play him at 2B, DH spot open for days off, and a personal connection to Vlad Jr. Jays also have some excess left handed bats to offer as part of the return, which is an AZ need.
Mark P
9:01
From a pure baseball perspective, yes.

But for the Jays and other team that might be an on-field fit for Marte, the big question is how will he fit into the clubhouse.  For as much controversy as Marte stirred up in Arizona, the heat will be worse in Toronto since he'll have the national spotlight on him.
Giancarlo Stanton
9:02
Do I get to 500 HR and/or HOF?
Mark P
9:03
456 career homers for Stanton, and he had 24 in basically a half-season of availability in 2025.  If (big if) he can stay reasonably healthy and plays for two more seasons, I think he barely gets there.
