Sorry to those who were looking for a chat yesterday -- family obligations interfered.
2:31
Figured I'd launch one today instead. I'll allow a few minutes for the room to fill up and we'll get moving.
DiPoto
2:34
What SP do I end up with?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Dunno, but I'm guessing it's a value move, not a top-tier guy.
Rockies man
2:34
Was Davis worth it?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Price is acceptable but what's the opportunity cost here? Rox can probably find value at first and perhaps think they have behind the dish. If you accept that, and assume they have a good read on their rotation ability, then maybe it's sensible.
But the whole COL free agent spending strategy of late has just been kinda strange to me, honestly.

2:36
What would it take to acquire Kelvin Herrera
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
No indication as of yet. In a vacuum, I'd assume his cost is down somewhat since he really struggled last year and is a rental asset.
It's odd we haven't heard more, really. Seems like a guy the Royals should be shopping pretty hard.

Are Cardinals gong make a move for a Third Basemen?
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
They still have flexibility. Doesn't have to be a third baseman in particular. Really, if they had a chance to add a high-end player at any position 3-thru-6, they could do it.
Carter
2:39
White Sox have any chance to compete for a wild card this year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
In theory, any team does, right? So ... sure.
Otherwise, no.
Rocky Top
2:40
Do the Rockies look to make an addition at 1B or roll with McMahon now that they have signed three relievers?
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
The reliever signings only mean they need to do more, b/c they are so committed to 2018. Of course, they haven't punted the future or anything, but you don't sign these kinds of assets b/c you really think they are going to be useful for the life of the contracts. You do it b/c you really want them now and hope they can maintain their edge.
So ... no, I don't think they can just hold pat with what they have. Or just re-sign Mark Reynolds or something. I think they should be going bigger.
Mike NMN
2:42
jeff, what's been your biggest surprise of the offseason, either a team signing a player, or a team seemingly staying pat?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Can't say any teams are "seemingly staying pat" b/c there are so many players still unsigned.
Re surprises ... Santana to Philly was not something I saw happening at all, though I did think they would be in on major free agents.

Who hangs up first? Heliot, Beede, & Shaw for Yelich?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Think other orgs will beat that offer.

Kept hearing the Twins had a lot of money to spend to compliment their young core. Instead, they've gone with Rodney and Duke. Should I be worried?
Jeffrey Todd
2:44
Too soon to tell if they'll spend.
2:45
Never was clear they'd go after top relievers, necessarily, and there are arguments to be made that it'd be preferable to spend (if at all) on the rotation. I'm not sure I'm in love with the Rodney move, but neither is very committing and Duke is a sensible value proposition.

As a Reds fan what do I make of the Hughes signing?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
They need plausible MLB arms in that pen. I don't hate the idea of getting a reasonably priced, useful guy by promising a second year.

Is Boras going to pull this one out or do we have a market correction? Which FA is likely to fall the furthest?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
I think there's more to this than the bottom falling out of the FA market, generally.
2:51
There's the possibility of aging curves having a role. First year under new CBA staredown. One year blip due to multiple teams duckingunder cap. But regardless, other clubs ought to step up to find value opportunities, propping things up.

Who moves first, Realmuto or Yelich?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
Coin flip - which one draws first compelling offer.

What should the Reds do with Dilson Herrera? He’s blocked by Gennett, has Senzel coming fast, out of options, chronically hurt, and limited to 2B defensively
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
Would not say he's blocked by Scooter, who still can't hit lefties, is hardly a sure thing to repeat his season, and doesn't come with extended control rights. Expect Dilson will get his opportunities to show he can be a piece of the future.

Are the Yankees pretty much over trying to trade for Gerrit Cole? I haven’t heard much on that in a few days.
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
When I hear lots of chatter about a match that seems to be building steam, and then it simmers down, I usually figure either that the info was coming from someone with a reason to hype the market or that legit talks just stalled. In either case, it generally seems reasonable to put that match back into whatever bucket it warrants on paper.
Here, Cole looks like a solid match still for NYY, but I guess there's not much reason to think he's the guy more so than a few others.
