Welcome! I'll wait a few minutes for the chatters to gather round, but you can start dropping questions now.
Orioles fan
3:04
I am happy we got Cobb, but was it an overpay? It sure seems like it in this offseason.
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
Felt it was roughly market rate. There must have been some other competition propping up the market to an extent.
3:05
Real question isn't so much whether it was market rate as whether the O's should have been the team to do that. I guess it's generally positive news if you're the type of fan that prefers a team continue to try to compete year in and out, rather than enter a massive strip and rebuild project.
Yankees
3:05
Why don't the Yankees just release Ellsbury? The team is stronger without him.
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
They evidently do not feel that way and/or still think there's some hope they could shed some of his salary. I'd guess the thinking is to leave that depth in place for now and adjust as needed as the season progresses. Never know when somebody will turn up injured and there's no reason to rush to make a move.

Do the Brewers keep Miley?  Who ends up as the 4 & 5 in the rotation to being the season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:07
Seems like they want to and will work something out, but he's probably going to be out for a little while. With Logan also going down, odds of an outside addition are increasing, even if it's not a substantial one.
Yankees/Astros
3:08
Do you agree the Astros are the stronger all around team? The Yankees rotation and high strikeout amounts by the hitters concerns me.
Jeffrey Todd
3:08
Astros look somewhat stronger on paper, yeah, and they also likely have greater capacity to make consequential mid-season additions since they don't face the Yanks' luxury tax limitations.
Charles Keane
3:08
Do you see the Padres trading for a front line Starting Pitcher?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
Maybe at some point in the future, but not this winter.
Err, spring.

What’s up with Greg Holland?
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
No news of late.
Holland

Am I fit in cleveland
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
Multiple other teams, yes. Indians? No, can't see that.
3:11
$$$ and they have lots of arms.

3:11
Any chance Giants release Sam Dyson to avoid paying his full 4 million plus salary, thus stay below tax level?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
Does not seem to be a realistic option right now. And there were positive vibes from his last outing.
Brewers
3:12
Dose Jon Lackey make sense for the brewers with Wade Miley getting injeard
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Have to remember that anybody signed at this point that hasn't been in a camp somewhere is going to need some time to ramp up. Anybody's guess whether they would be interested in Lackey based upon his recent showing and his uniquely aggressive competitiveness. Otherwise, yes, he'd seem to be one of a few possibilities, though I guess I'd still be more inclined to expect some kind of trade.

Reds claimed kennys Vargas. Do you think he's a guy who just needs at bats to show what he can do? Votto playing all 162 doesn't help his situation
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Cannot see how he's going to end up on their roster when the season starts. I'm guessing he's either traded down the line or put back on waivers in hopes he clears.
CJ
3:14
Thoughts on Reds claiming Vargas? I peraonally like it. Pinch hitter with power, Reds have lacked for a while, not to mention possible trade bait.
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Trouble is, he's out of options and can't do anything but back up Votto and pinch hit late in games. Hard to see that being a reasonable use of a roster spot.

Michael Conforto hit 2 HR in an intrasquad game yesterday. If he is good to go (sometime mid April???). Are the Mets better playing Bruce at 1b Conforto in RF and Nimmo/Lagares in CF?. If Bruce does not play 1b then they really should upgrade more than A-Gon.....Adam Lind is just waiting for a chance. Guy hit .314 with 14 HR in just over half season's worth of ABs.
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
They still need to be patient with Conforto and make sure he's a full go before turning him loose on the daily grind of major league baseball.
3:17
If all goes well and he's ready for regular duty at some point, they'll still have had time to assess. A-Gon is going to get a little run at first. But if he's not working out then I can see the OF scenario you propose. Or another 1B can be brought in at some point. Lind could in theory be an option though presumably he'll land elsewhere at some point this spring and at least be in another org at Triple-A.

3:18
Hi Jeff, if you could look into your crystal ball. Do you anticipate next offseason being as slow moving as the one we just had?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
I wouldn't really make that prediction. It seems likelier than it would have before this offseason, of course. And you can imagine some wary circling of players and teams at the outset of the winter. Then again, we could see some freeing of the bounds of the luxury tax line and perhaps some orgs will go out aggressively in search of the guys they want. That happened with Chatwood this year, as well as a few relievers, so maybe a new crop of position players and starters will be treated differently.

I think you recently said you wanted to explore all of Oregon before planning another trip.  How do you go about finding places to explore?  Is it based on NP's and campgrounds, is there other resources you use when deciding where to explore next?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
Oh man we'd be here all day on this topic! I like to be opportunistic -- find a great deal or have just the right amount of time or happen to be near a certain thing. Best resource is to be bold and try new things!
Since I said that re Oregon, I've probably come up with like 6 trip schemes to other places, ha.

3:21
At this point is the Holland camp waiting for a big injury to a contender?
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Wouldn't assume they are just hanging their hat on such a scenario, but it also sure wouldn't hurt. It's hard to know. We also just saw Alex Cobb get paid.

3:22
From what I'm reading, the Blue Jays are being very seriously underestimated. I'm not crazy to think they have a legitimate chance at a wild-card spot, right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
That seems generally fair to say, yeah. I think they are being overlooked b/c the top of the division is strong. Then again, the ALE looks pretty good all around so that could cost a few Ws. Will be a tough road but they should be considered one of the favs for a WC.
Lance Lynn
3:24
Will next year's market be kinder to me?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Wouldn't be unprecedented. See Santana, Ervin.
