Did I chat yesterday? I did chat yesterday. But I was supposed to chat today.
Bank error in your favor. Or, chat error, at least.
3:11
So, ask away. Just make sure you don't ask the same questions you already did yesterday!

Nats have got to trade Harper, right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
I guess they may as well take it to the end of the month. But yeah, let's do it.

3:15
I lose McCann this offseason. What would you do? Resign him? Play Stubbs? Sign Grandal or Ramos? Trade for Realmuto?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
They are going to look elsewhere, I imagine. The fact they acquired Maldonado could be an indication they like him. Maybe they do something like that and plan for a fairly even timeshare with Stassi. Hard to know who they like, but there are loads of FA options beyond those mentioned. Flower, Suzuki, Lucroy etc

Is there an extension that would make sense for both Vlad and the Jays.  Vlad could secure huge money and still be a young free agent (while the Jays could buy out a couple of free agent years).
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
Vlad has a rich father and got a big bonus, so I don't think he's likely to be too desperate to get a deal done. Certainly it would be worth it to the Jays to risk a decent chunk of money, but I just don't see this as being one of the unique circumstances where it would be most likely to occur.
Still only one pre-promotion extension in MLB history. Jon Singleton.
Which I defended even as it was panned by others ... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/06/contextualizing-the-jon-singlet...
And worked out quite well for him.
Matt
3:19
Do you think the Jays find takers for Estrada and Granderson?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
Granderson, yes, classy veteran who can still be a handy bench bat. Less clear that Estrada will really be useful to a contender but he's among the more desirable potential innings eaters that could be had. At least 50/50 on him.

3:20
Hi Jeff, how can I find out a list of players that have already pass the waivers process.
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
Well, we normally keep one. But typically we wait to run it until there are a decent number of players that have cleared. I only recall a handful so far. But ... it'd be worth doing soon, so maybe this is the reminder we needed!

3:21
Do you think the phillies resign Wilson Ramos after the season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
The fact that they traded for him shows they like him, so that's an important consideration. Need is certainly still likely to be there if they don't want to rely on Alfaro/Knapp. That seems fairly likely since they are going to be aiming for full-throttle contention. Otherwise, we'll see how they view him after controlling him for a few months and how the market goes.
3:23
Pirates are calling up Kevin Newman, it seems.

Wait. Isn’t it Jason’s day?
Jeffrey Todd

Steve Tuesday Jason Wednesday Jeff Thursday
But I mistakenly chatted yesterday. So ... chats aplenty.

And not entirely unrelated - if you're the Jays, what's the lowest return you agree to for Donaldson vs. holding and hoping he declines a QO for the draft pick?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Well that's a good question, actually. In many cases, I think the QO possibility doesn't factor that heavily. But in this one, the Jays could legitimately say, "we don't care what happens the rest of the season, we're giving him the QO ... and we would be happy if he accepts, b/c a 1/18-ish risk on Donaldson is way worth it and we kinda sorta want to contend and if that doesn't work out maybe he's  a big chip next summer." So, they should value it if that's the case.
3:26
I can't really give an exact answer to the question, but I don't think this is a scenario where they will necessarily just say "we'll take what we can get or just let him go for salary relief if all else fails."

3:27
Why does everyone just assume I'm leaving?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
I have long said that's a faulty assumption. Now, there are factors lining up against it. That includes the possibility of a trade. Even more importantly, with Soto emerging and Robles also ready for a shot, there is a very strong argument to be made that they ought to focus resources elsewhere. There will be other needs, for sure.

3:29
Not even the slightest chance Bryce Harper clears waivers, right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
Nope. And as with the Jays -- far moreso, in this case -- the Nats can and will hold out for a real return. But have to imagine some team claims him.
3:31
Giants and Pirates likely to get first crack ... but will either team be willing to take on the $?
After that, it's hard to guess since the standings will likely change.

Have a feeling the Reds will be active this offseason
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
Trouble is, they already have like 70 mil on the books before arb money. And 50 for 2020. So ... not like there will necessarily be a ton of flexibility for an org that has never gone much beyond 100 in payroll.

3:33
Any chance Reds utilize some Rays pitching logic with slew of young "starters" struggling? Give me some hope of showing signs of being a forward thinking organization!
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
For sure. They have already talked about that sort of thing quite a bit, though they have yet to push the logic on the field. Would probably behoove them to experiment a bit more late this year. Why not?
Hal Reniff
3:35
What kind of a market will there be for JA Happ in the offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Think it will be very robust. Lackey's 2/32 seems like a comp worth keeping in mind.

Looks like fellow major leaguers are standing up for Acuna all around-MLB needs to send a stern message!!-Do they not?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
I'll admit I haven't seen the full details, but based on how the situation was described to me -- i.e., that it was v clearly intentional -- then I fully agree. It is absolute garbage to plunk a guy b/c he is hitting well. Possibility of injuring a star attraction should only increase MLB's desire to send a clear message here.
