Hey everyone ... thanks for joining.
3:12
Drop me your best question -- only your best! -- and I'll start mowing through them shortly ...

3:14
Who's the A's opening day second baseman?
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Y'know, I was struggling to address the 2B position in the Nationals outlook post I just published.
3:16
Now that Lowrie has new reps, that could re-set contract talks. I assume they'll do something - not just hand it off to Barreto - but it's so hard to guess because there are just dozens of possibilities. That's good news for teams like the A's and Nats that would probably like to have an everyday type but may not want to spend a ton.
LeMahieu, Dozier, Cabrera, Kinsler ...

Murphy, Gordon, Castro ...

Do you think the Cubs could unload Chatwood if they pair him with Russell? Say to a team like the Padres for some high risk high reward prospects?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
I think you're overestimating Russell's value. His value would be questionable enough without the domestic violence suspension, but that makes it awfully tough to acquire him. Many teams would probably be a hard pass.

Who says no to Quintana, 1 of Happ or Schwarber and Kintzler for Kluber?  Maybe add a prospect or two moving either way as well.  If Indians are strapped for money this lets them fill out their roster without spending more and remain competitive.  Cubs get the upside arm and Indians get more talent spread around.
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
Cubs fans ... c'mon now!
Q is a solid asset. Happ/Schwarb are nice pieces. Kintzler is an underwater contract.
3:20
Kluber is a bona fide ace, one of at least the 10 best SPs in baseball. He's going to bring back more than that.

Do you think the Cardinal intrest in Harper is there or are they looking for a cheaper option.
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
STL reporters seem to think there's a legit shot. They have tried to land major FAs in the recent past. He fits.
3:22
So, I don't see why they wouldn't pursue him at least to the point that they feel comfortable. And I expect it'll be a fairly competitive level of interest.

Should the jays trade for Jon Gray?
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Jon Gray is really not much of a buy-low target, IMO. I just don't see the Rockies giving up on him.

As a whitesox fan, is it crazy for me NOT to want Bryce Harper? I just don't think he's worth the money he's going to deman
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
You would be crazy not to want Harper on the roster, but certainly there's a point at which you might reasonably prefer not to pay him.
3:25
For the Sox to land him, as a team that really doesn't seem ready to win right out of the gates, I suspect they'll have to really stand out from the market in terms of the money. So ... yeah, you may root against that if it means going really, really big.
3:26
Remember, we staked out a position on total market value that is quite a bit higher than most industry prognosticators. And we think there is still a possibility that a 400MM-ish deal over a really long term is fair value for a FA of his kind, not just what a crazy bidding war would create. That's because spreading all the money over a long term reduces the luxury tax difficulties and leaves the team a broad span over which to recoup its commitment.

Mets; what’s the word? Only focus on getting bullpen help?  Any chance of Harper (since he supposedly likes NYC food)? What do you see/hear the Mets doing this off season including trades?
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
I still wonder how they are going to do as much as the Van Wagenen comments have seemed to hint, unless they are just going to add payroll.
3:29
I suspect it won't end up feeling that momentous, but who knows. I personally like them to land 2 good veteran relievers, at least 2-3 more on cheap/minors contracts, and do something at catcher. Anything beyond that is sort of in wild card territory.
Theo
3:29
Just your daily Harper to the Cubs question. Do you think it’s possible? (He just said again the Chicago is his favorite food city)
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
I'm not completely convinced they are just entirely out of the picture. I also think Bryce would love to have the Cubs involved -- it's a very appealing possibility and at the very least represents a market-moving potential bidder. Wouldn't read too much into whatever it is he said.

Is inciarte, newcomb, and the pitching prospect of cleveland's choice a good start for kluber? How much more?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
This is better than the offer proposed above, since it seems to include a really good pitching prospect rather than a dead-weight contract, but I still don't know. I personally feel like CLE wouldn't be interested in doing something that doesn't keep them firmly positioned to contend while also clearly setting them up for strides in the longer haul. Your proposal could do that, and it seems a reasonable one to make, but I sort of feel like premium young position-players would be of greater interest. Just not sure Inciarte does enough.

3:33
Do you think Bour will end up in AL? He can hit, not sure what Phillies we’re doing?
Jeffrey Todd
3:33
They just rented him. I'm sure they shopped him and didn't get enough love to make it worth hanging on.
3:34
Don't think he's an AL-only guy, b/c a lot of teams would like the bat. (Nats love this kind of player.) But I agree it's an easier fit with a DH slot available.

BREAKING
@Mets
We've signed LHP Ryan O’Rourke to a minor league contract and invited him to major league #SpringTraining. #Mets
What'd I say about adding relief arms? Soo much opportunity in that pen.

3:35
Possible that Matt Davidson is a Position player and pitcher next season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
Not a ton to lose by letting him get work in off the bump, so sure. He could help save the pen a few times. And it's not like he's a core player who you're worried about from an injury perspective.
Ed
3:36
Is there an equally bad contract that would make sense for the Mets to swap Jay Bruce for?
Jeffrey Todd
3:38
I have mentioned before there are a lot of candidates for bad contract swaps. More than usual, seems to me. Plenty of players who I think clearly still profile as worthwhile MLB players. Bruce is among them. As for a match ... Rockies could put him at first and send some relievers?
