Hey everyone! Lots to talk about today eh?
Leave some questions and we'll start working through them in a few ...
3:09
Please no trade proposals! We can do that in a rapid fire round at some point at the end of a chat.
Probably not today's.

Strongest team in NL East?
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
TBD. As things stand today, the Nats by a narrow margin. But obv they have made the most moves. Important to recognize how big the adds have been, though -- mess of a C situation way better, big pitching upgrades.

What does Goldy mean for the cardinals and for Matt Carpenter
Jeffrey Todd
3:11
Don't see why they'd do anything but shift Carpenter ... probably to 3B.
No reason to add a huge bat and then dump another.
3:12
Otherwise, obviously, it's a clear win-now move. Hard to know what others might be in store but we have to anticipate more to come. THey aren't taking on much salary with this decision, notably.

Where is MadBum gonna go and what what’s a possible return for him?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
I predict he'll stay b/c offers just won't be great enough to be worth it. Hold and hope for a mid-season deal.
AA

What are the chances the Bravos land Haniger?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Great fit. Other teams will have clear interest as well but I would think they are perhaps the likeliest to land him. OTOH signs are the M's really don't want to move him. (Never rule anything out with Dipoto at the helm, obv.)

With the Indians extending Carrasco, does this mean it will be Kluber or Bauer traded?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Probably. Latter makes the most sense to me with 2 years of control.
Just a random guy
3:15
Were not many teams interested in goldschmidt?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
Not a lot of clubs really had the roster fit. Rays were reportedly in on him, which makes sense and is also interesting. I thought the return was pretty good, so long as Arizona feels one or both of Weaver & Kelly are at least quite likely to be solid contributors. It was a one-year rental of a $12M player.

Given the moves made so far and the rumors, do you still think Harper ends up in LA?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
I don't believe I ever said I specifically thought that. Tim has final say on the predictions. Even then, we're typically just edging one team over another -- and also trying to make the entire picture work together, which is very hard to do in any kind of reasonable manner.
3:19
That said ... I still see LAD as a plausible pursuer. Same with CHC. Really not sure I have a fav right now.

Do the Cards now turn and trade JoMart to the Rays?  If so, what kind of return are they looking at?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
If not the Rays then somewhere else, have to figure. But TBR may be content with Choi. Hard to know who they prefer.
Cards have no leverage on Martinez and I wouldn't expect much bak.

What’s my next move?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
I would expect the bullpen will be a focus but they could still surprise at catcher or the rotation.

How relieved are you that the market is moving much quicker than last year?  Your job has to be a whole more fun this way.
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Obviously the job is to react to the market as it plays out, however it plays out, but ... yeah, selfishly, it's a lot more fun when moves are made throughout the winter.
Reason isn't even so much just that it's boring to sit and wait. It's that the market setting doesn't change without moves, so there's nothing new to think about or assess.

3:22
Besides Mitch Haniger, do you see any other C OF of his caliber for the Braves to trade?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
Well I have wondered what would happen if the Mets sent Nimmo or Conforto to Miami ... would the Marlins spin that player off? Intriguing possibilities!
David Peralta has to be available. But the trade market on corner OFers doesn't seem very strong.
Trev
3:23
Why has there not been more discussion around trades for Sonny Gray?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
If anything I think there has been quite a bit of it for his actual present day value
Prison Mike
3:24
Michael Brantley mentioned he's willing to play 1B. How many more suitors might he have if that's the case?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
I don't see how it changes things all that much. I guess it helps a NL team think of a ramp-down strategy on the back of a contract, but meh.
Red Fred
3:25
what do you make of so many Reds rumors in regions of FA and trades they've never been a part of?  Who do you think they actually obtain?
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
It's a good question. They have broadcast they'll be in on players they weren't before. But does that mean they will drive the market on guys? Or that they are willing to pay more, but still need to get lots of value? We don't know. Their rumored targets (Pollock, Keuchel) are somewhat notable, b/c those are guys whose markets have been sorta tepid to this point.
3:27
Ultimately if you're talking about something like only getting one good FA at full market price (say, 90 for Dallas or 70 for Pollock), you have to wonder at the wisdom. Surely they will have some corresponding things lined up b/c the team really would need more pitching depth and perhaps also bench depth.
