Thanks for joining. We'll get this rolling shortly!

Is it weird that the Yankees were willing to give a three-year deal to a 36-year-old but not a six-year deal to a 28-year-old?
Jeffrey Todd
3:07
Not necessarily. Committing far in advance with imperfect knowledge is risky, regardless of age.
Chad

How did Matt Harvey get so much money?
Jeffrey Todd
3:07
We thought he'd get that over a two-year terms, so ...
I mean, the same salary, guaranteed for two seasons.
3:08
That sort of back of the rotation profile, with remaining youth and at least strong velocity (if not also some remaining upside), used to get paid reasonably well. That may not really be the case any longer. Or, at least, that sort of pitcher may have to go year to year more than they used to.

Could the reds go kluber and then sign keuchel and instantly be a playoff threat?
Jeffrey Todd
3:11
I mean, I'm sure they could get both players, but it'd mean giving up a massive haul and taking on a lot of salary. And they'd likely still project as the fourth-best team in the division. (Right now I would imagine they profile as #5, though I suppose some might argue they have or will bypass the Pirates.)
That would just be a really, really risky strategy. I think there are less committing ways that make better sense.

USA Today put out an article that Twins should grab Harper. Thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
They are doing an article on every team's case for signing Bryce. Which ... I mean ... okay? It seems rather unnecessary but who am I to judge.
Angels just announced the Cahill deal.

3:14
What else would I need to add to deal besides Tucker would be need to get Realmuto?
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Those types of deals usually (but don't always) involve a few other names, even if not of great value. Frankly, though, that type of premium prospect should be enough standing alone -- if the 'Stros would do it at all.
That's assuming the Marlins value Tucker as a ~top-10 prospect leaguewide.

Thoughts on the Cahill and Harvey signings? Seems like we're barely trying to contend in 2019 and more focused on 2020 when Shohei is healthy and some of the farm pieces are ready.
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
As I think I conveyed in writing up today's deal ... I'm not super enthused. I mean, don't get me wrong, there's some value in these deals. If anything I'm more bullish on Cahill. They are going for volume to deal with the health aspects, it seems. But as I indicated, that didn't shake out well last year when they were doing it with Richards and Ohtani (and Shoemaker). True, the outlook for Heaney and Skaggs is also better than it was, but neither looks like a TOR starter.
3:18
What's the plan for maximizing the Trout years? I would think now's the time to invest. Maybe they are still a dark horse to do something big?
3:19
Have to assume that Boras is owner-whispering to Arte, not that there's any reason to think that'll happen. Fun to imagine the possibility, though!

Could Stroman be acquired without giving up a top 100 prospect? Would three prospects from a teams’ 8-15 rankings work?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
I just don't think the Jays have interest in getting a marginal return for him.

Any updates on the reliever market? Who is the first to come off the board out of Britton, Miller, or Kimbrel?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
I'd guess Miller, if only b/c I expect him to sign once he gets a good offer from whatever slate of teams he'd prefer to be with. Actually I had sort of expected him to be an earlier signing. But one of the two lefties, for sure, seems likelier to leave the board than Kimbrel.

Edwin Encarnacion for Kendrys Morales - who says no?  Jays get a fan favorite back to help sell a few tickets and Mariners save $8M.  Seems win/win to me!
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
Can imagine something working out here. SEA might eat some of that cash difference. And, of course, then they'd have yet another 1B/DH to trade elsewhere.

3:22
Would a package of Dickerson and Cervelli makes sense for the Braves?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
Sure, but what are you doing to make the Pirates want to do this? You have to look at things from the other team's perspective. They are moving one-year assets, true, but not just anyone at any price. They also signed Chisenhall, remember. And recently acquired Archer and Kela.

Cahill and Harvey for $20, why not sign Keuchel?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
You not only get the 2 pitchers for 2019 but also get to (hypothetically) pick a new way to fill that salary slot for the next 3 seasons after that.
But there's only so far you can take this sort of rationale, right? If you're trying to overtake the Astros, you ultimately need more roster spots to be filled by really good players.

3:28
How low can you go?  Will theA's get any starting pitching or just go for openers and long relievers all season?
Jeffrey Todd
3:28
They are going to add several. Have to. Even if you prefer "openers," you need guys that can go a few innings behind them.
3:29
Evidently the prices haven't been there, bc you'd think the A's would be a nice spot for one-year guys to land. Big ballpark, good young team. Guess they still have trouble getting people interested in playing at the Coliseum, though.
Rewording
3:30
USA Today pointed out that the twins have a ton of money to spend, And should put that toward Harper instead of multiple smaller pieces. Are they onto something?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
Yeah I was blowing past the substance of this earlier, since I already noticed their earlier articles on other teams. Minny actually has a case as a Harper suitor. Why not go for it? They have the space, now and in the future. Could still hope several of their talented young pieces develop into stars. Etc. They are better positioned than most of the other on-paper darkhorses to actually do it, not that it's going to happen.

How close is St Louis to division favourite?  What moves do they still need to do to get over the line?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
I think it's closer than most would anticipate, because people view the Brewers as a still-ascending team. Right now, it's a 3-team cluster with the Pirates not really out of reasonable contention and the Reds potentially a factor depending upon what they do.
Really not sure how you'd look at the MIL/CHC/STL rosters and label one as obviously better or worse.

Who do you see, really, as the best in the NL East right now?
