Hi all ... thanks for joining and sorry for the delayed start. I'll wait a few minutes for the room to fill and we'll get rolling.
IsItAprilYet?
3:18
Who of the 4 suitors do you think is landing JT?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
I really wish I could say I have a good reason to prefer one over the others. Fact is, though, it's hard to look at those teams (Reds/Padres/Braves/Dodgers) and think one clearly makes more sense. Obviously the latter two are defending division titles, while the former two are coming from last place finishes, but all are clearly looking to contend and want to add a big piece. And they also all have credible existing catchers.
So ...
Who'll land JTR?

Reds (32.6% | 734 votes)

Padres (26.6% | 599 votes)

Dodgers (23.4% | 526 votes)

Braves (17.4% | 392 votes)

Thoughts on Bryce to Padres
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
I chuckled when I read that they are just now planning a meeting. That is dreadful news for his market. Boras obviously wants to at least spark some movement. But if they are just now sitting down and the Padres are more interested in Manny ... yeesh.

Are the braves waiting for a domino to fall and make another big move, or are they content where they are?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
Whether or not they get Realmuto, I think they are still eyeing another splash. Probably also content if that doesn't come to pass.
3:24
For me, the team really could stand to boost its late-inning group and condense some of its rotation talent into one really good MLB starter (not that it'll be easy to make that happen).
Could still stand to upgrade over Duvall as well though he's not a bad bet as a 4th OF.

Any news on Evan Gattis?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
None at all, and I'm sure you can guess why ... it continues to be rough times for that sort of player. I really thought he was going to be non-tendered last year.

Would it surprise you for the Braves to make a trade for JTR using Inciarte + and then the Braves make a strong push to close the Harper deal? Timing would have to be tight or already worked out prior?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
That would surprise me very much, yes, in no small part b/c I'm not sure why the Marlins would really want to target Inciarte and I really don't think the Braves are going to drop a 30 mil salary onto their payroll. (Plus whoever gets JTR is likely to try to extend him.)

Do I have a final offseason magic trick up my sleeve?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
He's been quiet. Makes sense, since he just came aboard and probably wanted to get a full feel for the org and chart a course.
3:28
My thought is that Will Smith (and to a lesser extent some of the team's other relievers) now stand out for teams that still want pen pieces. Maybe he can fill out the OF by trade? Maybe he even holds off to see if there's a big injury or for the trade deadline?
3:29
Not sure but I have to think he's exploring lots of options.

What the heck are the padres doing? Machado? Harper? Realmuto? Is AJ just fishing all the ponds to see what bites?
Jeffrey Todd
3:29
That is sort of what AJ Preller does, isn't it?

Why did we sign Freddy Galvis?, when we are rebuilding and we have Gurriel and Top prospect Bo Bichette waiting in the wings?? Should we not play the kids? And continue to develop them..
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
Yeah but you can't just chuck those guys out there to sink or swim. Galvis is a respected player who'll ease the pressure and set an example. Hardly the first team to take that approach.

Will there ever be a year that the Dodgers “go for it” - getting close can be as frustrating as not making the playoffs at all
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Hard to be upset at consecutive WS appearances and 5 straight division titles. I mean ... what else can you do?
3:32
I do think they can and should be a real player for elite talent. Wouldn't be surprised if they are still hanging out around the Harper market. But it also makes sense not to "go all in" over the winter if you feel your team is a strong favorite to win the division ... hold back some assets (prospects/cash) to utilize once you know more about needs during the season.

What else could the rangers do?
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
I've been surprised that they have spent this much. Really believed there was going to be a deeper rebuilding effort at some point, even if they never went full Astros. Since they have already put some coin down, maybe they will look for some opportunistic chances. But I don't really see much reason to think they are going to do anything especially eventful.

Do the Ray's send meadows down to open the year and start Garcia to limit meadows service time towards super 2 status?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
I am really not sure that Austin Meadows is enough of an asset to warrant that kind of treatment. He's also not on track to be a Super 2 since he's only played like a third of a season. They could hold him down for the first third or so of 2019 to hold off his free agency, but he'd have to spend most of the season in the minors to get the extra year AND avoid a S2 track. I think if the Rays want/need him in the majors, they'll bring him up.

What can we get back for Joc Pederson?
Jeffrey Todd
3:39
This is the kind of match that Zaidi could consider trying to line up. Otherwise ... these kinds of questions are hard to answer b/c Joc is a guy who would likely only be marketed if the Dodgers just decide they just don't want him around anymore. Like Puig and Gray. They'd probably just take the best offer they can get ... maybe it means picking up a good reliever, maybe it's non-40-man young talent.
OMG Brewers in 2019
3:40
Whispers of Brewers signing Keuchel. Are any Jeff Suppan/Matt Garza flashbacks justified if it does, indeed, happen?
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
Well that would depend entirely upon the price. I think the Brewers have established a pretty clear preference to avoid lengthy pitching entanglements so I assume they wouldn't go for one here. Think shorter term, high-ish AAV. Keuchel certainly has red flags, but
3:42
... he also is obviously a quality starter. You have to take that kind of risk sometimes. No reason to change your thinking based upon a few other specific contracts, since they do not bear directly upon Keuchel in the least.

What is with all the "comments pending moderation" as of late. I keep getting it when my comment didn't include any profanity or anything of the like.

I have noticed that to some extent as well. Not sure if something changed with our filters but I will check on it.

I don't really see how Realmuto fits with the Reds unless they can extend him or plan to flip him..Thoughts?
