It is really happening, folks. Realmuto. One of the most tiresome sagas I can remember!
Let us talk of that and more. Drop some questions and we'll get moving in a few minutes.

Odds NL has a DH this year? Next year?

I think the marlins go too little on the trade, your opinion? Honestly just one top 100 prospect?
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Can't say they didn't seek out as many proposals as possible. We don't really know what was on offer from other teams, but this isn't a situation where they just pounced on one offer.
And the trade is now official. Just announced by Phillies.
Chris

Marlins look like they did pretty well on the Realmuto trade. Your thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
See, there are opinions like this on both sides. I have already seen it panned from each perspective. Good indication of a fair deal.

Does JT acquisition make manny or Dallas more or less likely to come to philly?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
I think the odds of Harper and Manny are roughly the same as before, in that landing one was a clear target regardless. As for Keuchel ... I'd say this greatly boosts the likelihood. If you're swapping that talent for a 2-year guy in Realmuto, you should also be willing to take some financial risks on pitching.

Multiple sources inform me (which will soon be denied) that the Braves final offer to the Marlins for Realmuto did include 3B Austin Riley but "not much else." Miami preferred the Phillies package of Sanchez with Alfaro, and there you have it.

If you were the Cards GM, what last move would you make to push them past the cubs in the division?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
Since they didn't take on a lot of salary in their latest big moves (Goldy this winter, Ozuna last), don't have a ton of $ on the future books, and have some productive young talent ... don't see why a Kimbrel move would be off the table.
3:21
Thing about that division is, any advantage is at a premium. Super tight bunch.

So how much did Alex Anthopoulos botch the Braves offseason now that they missed out on Realmuto?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
I would never say a specific team NEEDED a specific player. But it was a pretty compelling fit. Two years of a premium catcher who you could reasonably expect to extend. Marlins went for young pitching, which Braves have in spades. And now JTR is playing for a rival for the division.
3:24
That said, we don't know the details. And you could easily argue that the Dodgers also should have gone harder.

Who starts in RF for the padres........Renfroe or Reyes?  And does Cordero supplant Margot if healthy?
Jeffrey Todd
3:24
Wait I thought they were going to sign Bryce?
3:25
But seriously ... thing is, none of these guys is really established. Unless roster pressures in the interim force a move, I doubt the Padres really have a plan other than to let players play and see how it shakes out.
3:26
I know that each of these guys has shown some amount of promise at the MLB level, but I feel like many Pads fans are overestimating the overall OF unit. Every single guy out there has a very clear, worrisome downside scenario. Some real upside, too. Just loads of uncertainty.
3:29
Sorry folks my internet blinked out.
Gmen
3:29
So uh who's the dodgers catcher this seasom
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
Well, they did trade for Russell Martin. So ... I guess that is the plan. Martin and Barnes. It is underwhelming, but then the Dodgers are also the only team in the NL that probably feels really confident in winning its division.

3:30
I think the Marlins shot themselves in the foot and could have had a better package from the Mets or 3-team trade.  Dumb....
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
I have seen this narrative, but I have yet to see any indication of what the Mets were actually going to give up.
3:32
If the 3-team scenario would legitimately have enabled the Marlins to land Andujar from the Yankees ... well, I guess that's open to debate, but I can imagine preferring the deal they took. Sixto Sanchez is a high-risk but very high-upside pitching prospect and Alfaro ain't nothin'.
Tyler
3:32
What are the chances that Harper signs with San Francisco? What other moves do you see the Giants making?
Jeffrey Todd
3:34
I'd certainly guess at this point that the odds are low ... like 10%ish at most. If the Giants really wanted to make a big offer for Harper, I assume they'd have been involved earlier. But I suppose all bets are off if he goes after a structure other than largest/longest deal possible.
Alex Anthopolous
3:34
Anything I can do at this late hour to save our offseason?  Fourth place in 2019 is looking like a real possibility.
Jeffrey Todd
3:35
It has always been a real possibility. The Braves have possible regression and pitching uncertainty to navigate. And the other three contenders have talent and money.
3:36
Not to say they aren't also still a real possible division winner. They are. I still feel like they have another move up their sleeve. Why drop 23 mil on Donaldson and then clam up entirely now? I think they want value, but signing Markakis did leave resources to work with to add a significant pitcher.
Allen Adams
3:37
Is the Berkman rule coming for HOF voting to give newcomers at least 2-3 years to stick on the ballot?
Jeffrey Todd
3:37
Dunno but it is ridiculous he is off the ballot. No reason they can't just make an exception and put him back on, honestly. This isn't sorting out the tax code for hundreds of millions of filings.

Boxberger signing thoughts look s like a solid buy low candidate who could be a nice piece come the deadline
Jeffrey Todd
3:41
Yeah it is a pretty easy risk to take at that price. Not hard to imagine him being a decent chip as well. If nothing else, Royals will be fun to watch this year with the speed-first approach, though it is just really hard to see enough slug and pitching to be at all competitive, even in that division.
hang tight ... signing!
3:43
nevermind, Steve is going to write it up
