Both are very useful players on the right roster, but have limitations (platoon for Kemp, glove for White). Really both fit pretty well in HOU right now, so I don't see why they'd be bumped out of the picture unless there's a significant development -- surprise acquisition or perhaps in mid-season if, say, Tucker becomes a force. In that case, assuming neither has torpedoed his value ... I still wouldn't get too excited because other teams know of those limitations as well. But you can imagine interest. And the Astros are in a spot where they'd be willing and able to take shots on lower level prospects they like.

No, because nobody really has any idea how to solve it. Every proposal on service time I've ever seen has huge holes in it. Plus, you have to recognize the opposing pressures here. If you want more money for old guys in FA, then that means less opportunities for young guys. I realize there's a focus on the top, top prospects here, so it's really not tied to the death of the middle class free agent, but ... how do you say precisely when those guys should be up?

It's imaginable to tweak the incentives but, again, I've yet to see a clear proposal that would solve the existing issues. Point being ... I think other matters will really be where the rubber meets the road in these talks.

Bear in mind, that roster isn't exactly primed to contend. So I have never really thought it made a ton of sense to just check down to the next guy. (Though I did think the White Sox would have still been a good Pollock landing spot.) I do think they'd look for interesting guys in trade. There will be some players dislodged -- say, Maikel Franco or Odubel Herrera from the Phils, others from other teams.

Um ... who did I mock? I dont know what that's in reference to, but I never disparaged anyone's opinion on keeping things the same. If you're talking about my DL/IL joke, that was ... just a really dumb joke. I understand why people prefer the DH stay out of the NL. I generally have held that view. I'm also reflexively anti-robo-ump.
