Lots to talk about!
3:09
Sorry I had to bail on yesterday's chat, but the Bryce timing just wouldn't allow it.
Drop some questions and we'll start rolling through them shortly.
Les Gomez
3:11
Any chance the Mets answer the Harper signing by adding Keuchel?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
If they sign Keuchel, which I don't expect, it won't be b/c the Phillies signed Bryce.
BRYCE HARPER
3:12
WERE WINNING 13 STRAIGHT WORLD SERIES
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
Not one, not two, not three ....
DC Nats
3:12
Do you see Nats going after any other FAs now that Bryce watch is over?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
Same as above. I think the general expectation was that Harper would land with the Phillies, right? Even if not, teams really do have to worry first and foremost about their own rosters.
Mike
3:13
Is it finally time that Byron Buxton becomes what he was projected to be?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
I am not going to be swayed either way by spring. His issue has never been flashing immense talent. It has been consistency at the game's highest level. I'm generally optimistic but let's wait and see.

Will Adam Jones get anything other than a minor league offer / ST invite? Who might be interested?
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Dan Szymborski tweeted something recently that was exactly what I've been thinking on this: we don't really know what Jones has been seeking, but perhaps if he had been out there looking for a job as a 4th OF at a reasonable rate of pay (say 3-5 mil per year), he'd have a job already.
3:16
I don't know what has been offered. But I have seen lots of national reporters going to bat for Jones with promo tweets that seem prompted by a chat with an agent. The guy is highly respected and I appreciate that. He was a very good player at his height. But he's not that right now. This isn't an Andrew McCutchen situation, where a superstar is actually still pretty good -- just no longer a star. Jones is not a regular player, based upon his recent track record.

Wasn't expecting Adam Warren to be signed by the padres
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
Not surprised to see them going for some depth in that area. I still think they will be trying to pull off more. If you're going to spend on Manny, it makes loads of sense to go ahead and buttress other areas and increase your actual chances of contending. Wouldn't be surprised to see them circle back on rotation or relief trade targets.
3:19
BTW the Giants are now positioned to take some chances on outfielders they like, sitting there with some good, affordable short-term relievers. Phillies and Pads are among the teams that have excess OF talent.
Mets
3:19
Do you think this signing of Gomez means they look to trade lagares and use that money elsewhere or is it likely just a depth signing?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
Another team on that list, though with less interesting OF pieces they'd actually move.
3:20
No, I don't really think that's the case. I don't know who'd be after Lagares anyway. More likely he competes with Broxton. Not saying it isn't possible Juan gets knocked out of the door, but the financial commitment matters.
AJ
3:21
Do you think we'll get any significant trades this month?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
I do! Just a pet theory but I feel like a few teams still have moves left in 'em. (Looking at you, Padres.)
James
3:22
Will Pete Alonso make the opening day roster? In that division they need every win they can get, and keeping him down seems to be a move that could cost them a wild card.
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
This isn't Kris Bryant vs Mike Olt ... and even then, you were talking about a couple of weeks. I agree the Mets need to put it all out there from day one, but let's remember that Alonso is a first baseman and not a super-elite overall prospect.
3:24
Not trying to diminish his promise as a hitter. Just saying. Now, they may well find it worthwhile to go ahead and call him up, esp if they end up with obvious roster space bc of the injuries.

3:24
What does Harper contact do for trout?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Nothing really. Not a comp (there is none) for Trout himself and it isn't going to preclude the Phillies from pursuing him in 2 years.
If I die in Raleigh
3:25
The baseball gods are trolling Liberty, McGuirk, AA, et al., for not spending more on pitching, amirite?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
Perhaps. But y'know, there are just always risks with pitchers - esp young ones that are gearing up for MLB competition. And with guys who are coming off of injuries (Dansby/Donaldson). Part of their entire theory, I think, was that they'd lean on the depth and kind of trust that whoever was standing (from health/performance perspective) would be good.
That's not an unjustifiable strategy. It's just that they could have taken an extra step -- and perhaps still can -- to boost the certainty a bit.
3:28
(Braves also still on my "could strike a significant trade" list)

3:28
Do you think Trout would sign on for 10yr/$350m with opt outs? If not what is the offer he can't refuse?
Jeffrey Todd
3:30
If Nolan Arenado's age-29+ seasons are worth $34MM or whatever it was, then Trout's are worth like $60MM. Ha. I mean, that' s a bit facetious, but ... Trout projects as like a 8.5-9.5 WAR player.
I don't think he's signing an extension, but if he does, 10/350 isn't on the map.
Kent Hrbek
3:31
Do you want a bite of my sandwich?
Jeffrey Todd
3:31
Indeed. Any sandwich Kent Hrbek deigns to eat is surely a damned fine sandwich.

Do you think Kimbrel will end up taking a 2 year deal?
Jeffrey Todd
3:32
No I don't. I think he'll at least get to 3.
