Honest question. I haven't. But ... it doesn't always work out. Remember when all the rage was giving Matt Adams time in the OF? yeah...
The feelings on shoving a bat in the corner OF start to change real quick when an easy inning-ending out turns into a bases-clearing inside the park home run, etc.

I should be playing every single day.

Then you better demand a trade.

Jeff, how long do halos go with Cozart and Bour? 1 month, 2 months. I'd like to see Thaiss at 1B and Ward at 3B. I think they will be part of the future, bring them up get experience. Harvey, Cahill and nAllen traded at deadline for prospects. What do you think Jeff?
Jeffrey Todd
9:59
Ha I just noticed a second iteration of the question in which you answered my question to you -- who would you replace them with?
10:00
I don't think a one-year guy like Bour is an obstacle to anyone. Pujols/Ohtani is a much bigger barrier to Thaiss.
10:01
As for Ward, he got an initial shot already and that didn't work out. He's probably in line for more chances soon but he's also not yet in that spot where he's just totally biding his time in the upper minors.

Are you expecting any big or notable trades early in the season?  Looks like a few teams that could be competitive and could use some SP... any predictions on teams making earlier than expected moves?
Jeffrey Todd
10:03
Can't say I expect it, but there's an interesting hypothesis to be tested: will the elimination of September trades lead to more aggressive early-season trade? On the one hand, no, since teams will still want to gather as much info as possible. On the other, maybe, since there'll be more fear of a late-July rush that leaves you without a deal (either buy or sell side).
10:04
Add to that the fact that there are a few teams that seem in need of a certain player that could match up with others. Marcus Stroman is the most interesting guy to contemplate in my mind, if you're thinking of a truly "big or notable" deal ... we rarely see much of anything of consequence this time of year.

My head's spinning with all the chat schedule changes and whatnot, is this where I can vote on whether I like the Jets' new uniforms?
Jeffrey Todd
10:05
Ha. Sorry ... not a change, just a screw-up on my part!
10:06
Also no we cannot vote on that b/c they still look exactly like any other Jets uni. Except the weak black ones. Why is this something people are excited about?
The black uni is just atrocious.
Okay back to baseball where there are no black uniforms except in Arizona ...
10:07
and Miami ...
oof and those old Jays unis, not a fan!

10:07
After my outing, do u think i am a starter or reliever long term?
Jeffrey Todd
10:08
I suppose that bought him a few more turns before he's inevitably rotated into the pen or back to Triple-A.
Really ... it's so hard to know. Do the Braves have real feelings on which guys they believe in? Or are they just sort of going to play it all by ear and give everyone chances and manage innings/injuries? Not sure.

Time to shop Bryant with me in the fold?   Do you like the extension?
Jeffrey Todd
10:09
I can't fathom why that deal would lead to trading one of the best players in baseball when he's still affordable and controllable.
10:11
Do I like it? I don't know. Seems a bit premature but if they really believe in him and see a path to value here -- which they must -- then I can't argue with it in concept.

10:11
can Kimbrel benefit from signing with us for 1 year? Why is he still unsigned?
Jeffrey Todd
10:12
He obviously has zero interest in that. Nor should he. I obviously don't know exactly what he's seeking at this point, but the guy is unquestionably worth a significant multi-year deal.
10:13
Some people seem to have sort of skipped him ahead mentally to where, say, Greg Holland ended up. Kimbrel was still really really good for almost all of last year and he was unfathomably dominant in 2017.

10:14
Surprised by all the claims and trades early on or signs of more on the horion?
Jeffrey Todd
10:16
Some of the new guard GMs seems to be a bit overly hesitant about parting with that cherished future value. But they aren't shy about playing around with the margins of their 40-man rosters. I think we'll continue to see a high volume of those kinds of deals as teams look for pitchers they can churn, late-blooming position-players, and guys they can claim and then try to pass through waivers and stash.
Pete
10:16
Okay, let me put it this way: what two major league ready outfielders would you target if your were the Giants, considering that you would send at least one—possibly two—of the Giants best bullpen guys  (Smith, Watson, et al) in return.
Jeffrey Todd
10:17
I don't think they are in a position to target specific players, so much, with those trade chips. It's a situation where they will field interest from teams that want the relievers.
10:18
Beyond that, the framing of the question seems to suggest the Giants would or should care that they'd be giving up their "best bullpen guys." I think they see Smith and Watson purely as assets. They know they need to cash them in by July 31st. Is it worthy trading them now or holding out to see what they can get mid-season? So far, they've preferred to hold out.
10:19
I meant purely as trade assets
Dolan
10:19
Why can’t fans understand that it’s my money and I don’t have to spend?
Jeffrey Todd
10:19
Huh?
10:20
I mean, sure, on the one hand that's true. I also don't think anyone has suggested otherwise. They are just saying "we think you should spend."
10:21
Beyond that, Dolan is trying to sell the fans a product, no? Fans can vote with their wallet. They can demand certain features, etc,  just like they would if they were deciding on a new car.
And even further beyond that, teams do enter a different territory when they take public money for their stadiums. Then there's a public interest that goes beyond the purely commercial.

10:22
What do you think of the Padres' decision to have Fernando Tatis Jr on the roster to start this season?
Jeffrey Todd
10:24
I obviously completely understand why some people think it's stupid. And in some regards, it is. But there's also something admirable about it. And I wouldn't completely dismiss the idea that it could be beneficial in the long run. Maybe he has an amazing experience and is extra eager to stay in SD in the long run. We've seemingly seen several players push their agents to complete extensions of late that wouldn't have happened had the players been less committed to those specific teams.
