How long before Soroka is a permanent member of Braves rotation?
Jeffrey Todd
3:46
I think he pretty much is, unless he struggles or gets hurt, and with the caveat that there'll probably be innings limits.

Can everyone stop with the “player x is going to team y because of *personal life thing*? This year proved that almost no players sign places because of that. Harper’s family reportedly wanted him near Las Vegas, signed in PHI. Patrick Corbin’s family wanted him to be a Yankee, signed with WSH. Machado wanted to be a Yankee and his entire family signed with the White Sox, went to the Padres. Mike Trout loves the city of Philly, stayed with LAA.

I would interpret things slightly differently. Most of those "things" seem largely to be supposition. Like, when did Bryce ever say he wanted to be near Vegas? Yet we heard it repeated over and over. The Corbin thing had obvious roots, but DC isn't that far. And as Trout specifically said, sometimes it's nice to have some distance
3:49
That doesn't mean that personal factors aren't involved. I absolutely think they are. But these guys have the means to get from A to B whenever they want with relative ease and can spend the offseason living wherever they like. They probably need to be able to envision themselves in a certain place and understand how their lives will work. It's just that doesn't always look the way that outsiders assume it would.
Oh and ...

(hasn't yet been reported so far as I see ... let's test our collective sense for the market!)

Do you think the Nats will actually get an extension done with Rendon?
Jeffrey Todd
3:52
I am fairly bullish on that still, yeah. Maybe even odds?

Sources close to the situation who know somebody who met somebody who went to school with a cousin's neighbor say that Kimbrel may sign in the near future. Or he may not. We're not sure. More breaking news later...

heard it here first!
I'm going to guess 2/44 for Davis. Going on record!

NOOO
too high!

I’ve learned Khris Davis’ deal is worth $16.75 million for each year of the deal.
I thought maybe he had 'em over a barrel by hitting all these dingers ha.

How many 'wins' is a replacement level player worth?  It cannot be 0 because a AAA team would win games by law of large numbers against MLB teams.
Jeffrey Todd
3:56
That's not quite how it works. A theoretical replacement-level team would still win games. Replacement doesnt mean 0 wins.
3:57
Looks like the baseline for Fangraphs is .294 winning percentage.
Let's kill all the lawyers
3:58
Hey Jeff, just found out I passed the February bar today. I remember a few weeks back you mentioned being a lawyer.  I googled you and found out you graduated cum laude from Harvard. Why'd you start writing for MLBTR after doing that?
Jeffrey Todd
3:58
Congrats ... yeah it just isn't for us all, I guess. I didn't have any direction I really wanted to take. Didn't know what I really cared about. So I needed to bail out of that whole career and dive into something I knew I truly enjoyed. Enter baseball.
4:00
Also this is a pretty cool gig for a lot of reasons. I get to live anywhere (and work from anywhere, even if traveling) and spend lots of time with my kids when they are little and don't totally hate my guts. No commuting. I do lots of community things and do most all of my own house work. I wasn't sure at all when I started how long I'd do it for, but Tim is a really good person to work for and Steve is a really good person to work with.

Is there a potential Braves/Giants trade deal in the very near future?
Jeffrey Todd
4:01
Sure but you know the Giants are eyeing up premium assets. No reason whatsoever for them to lower the price at this point of the year. Wait for someone to get desperate.

Padres ownership has stated that 2021 is the target year for serious contention. I think the Padres will have a fairly solid nucleus and have a great rotation in their future. I think they'll still be one great middle of the order hitter short of a serious world series run though. Who should they target in the next year or so to get on base for Machado?
Jeffrey Todd
4:02
2021?!
4:03
I can buy that they aren't going to truly go all-in this year, but ... now's the time to start contending. You don't sign Manny and promote two of your best prospects at the start of the season and then just coast.
Tim
4:03
How many years is Evan Gattis looking for and who will most likely sign him?
Jeffrey Todd
4:04
I assume he was pretty much just looking for a MLB job by the time camp started up. He was never a candidate for a multi-year deal. Look at how guys like Duda and Matt Adams have been treated by the market in recent years.
Mark Reynolds, Chris Carter, etc.

For several years I have been coming to chats and asking who would win a mascot battle royal and nobody ever responds. Stop ducking me you cowards!!!

I SEE YOU
Are we like imagining they are real creatures? Or just going off of the dudes wearing the suits and which suits are more or less restrictive/advantageous for fighting?
4:07
Or is this about the quality of the mascot? I go Phanatic regardless.

Even if I don't pony up for Keuchel, I can't keep running Jason Vargas out there every fifth day much longer, right? Gsellman, Lugo, or literally anyone else would be better.
Jeffrey Todd
4:09
Yeah I feel like they have to be close to a change. Certainly one or two more outings, but ... if he's just not competitive then you can't be throwing games away with this kind of competition in the division.
LOL
4:10
Sounds about right. You always add the Jeff-Todd-premium to your estimates
Jeffrey Todd

I missed it! I get surprised on the high side sometimes, though, honestly.
