They can go after guys with injury risk, I guess. Some other contenders will want more certainty. But it's not like they can just look at xFIP and find some dudes that the market will miss. The Yankees went out and got Lance Lynn last year when he had a brutal ERA. The Dodgers are always digging guys up. Those clubs are all over the value proposition players, as are others (Braves, etc).
2:59
Halos can do the same and hopefully do better. (Better at least than their value bets in free agency.) But the difficulty is they aren't in as good a position, so it's harder to act with conviction on the guys they like when they may be going after a marginal chance at a wild card.

Frazier + Andujar + German or Loaisiga + Devi Garcia for Scherzer, is it viable? if not enough, who should be added to this trade package?
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
You can probably add up packages for days, it just doesn't seem likely at all to me. Those guys are at or near the majors, so in theory they are the types of players the Nats would want. But ... the Nats are not punting on 2019, let alone the remaining seasons on Scherzer's deal. They want super-premium players like Max, not a collection of good but not great players. Unless you do something wild like put Gleyber Torres in a deal, I don't even see negotiations gaining traction.

What are the odds the Nationals learned from not going full sell-mode last season and will actually be sellers this year?
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
If they just collapse in the next few weeks, there's a chance. Real question will be Rendon, not Scherzer, unless it gets ugly. But they have been playing much better and have a soft upcoming schedule. Seems unlikely. Rendon also remains an extension/re-signing candidate. Even Doolittle isn't a surefire trade piece even if they sell, since he's got a cheap option for 2020.

Inciarte and Allard for?
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
I appreciate you putting the question in this form. Truly. Most times, people wonder whether the spare parts on their favorite team can be cashed in for [insert high-end, popular trade target].
3:06
Inciarte and Allard have their appeal. But they are also probably expendable for the Braves. The Braves know that. Their rivals know that. Value accordingly.
I do still think Ender makes sense for ATL, as I suggested here: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/should-the-braves-trade-ender-i...

Wil Myers for Zack Greinke straight up who hangs up first?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
This is a good example of how value-based assessments of contracts can have limits. Greinke is seriously expensive for his age. But he's also still really good. And there just aren't that many really good starters out there, let alone theoretically available without a long commitment or absurd outlay of young talent. We know Myers has talent, but he hasn't been consistent at all. Also way overpayed. Most top contenders would see him as a reserve piece. I don't think they are in the same class.

I'm a Reds fan and, having just read the piece about them possibly adding a controllable bat I was wondering what your take on that might be. I'm not really seeing an obvious need anywhere but perhaps you or JP Morosi know something we don't.
Jeffrey Todd
3:11
As I suggested already ... you should ask Morosi. He put the report out. I don't really understand it. It's kind of maddeningly vague. I wrote a post on it mostly to explain that and because it was drawing attention. We try to contextualize things and give a neutral take on this stuff to the best of our abilities.
3:12
Sorry, that comes across as being cranky w/r/t DockEllisDee ... wasn't my intention.

Are the Reds a real wild card contender when they add Alex Wood and Scooter to the team soon?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
As I also hinted in the post I wrote on the aforementioned trade rumor, I think the idea that the Reds are going to need bats and won't need pitching is not necessarily on the mark. Getting Wood back would help, but who knows what he'll have. They have had impeccable injury fortune thus far. How often does that last? And the bats are quite likely to improve. It could all turn out well in combination. Just ... seems as likely or likelier they will end up in position to add to the pen or even rotation as that they will want a substantial lineup upgrade.

3:14
Highly unlikely, but if the Mariners are looking to clear salary, would a deal such as Cozart, cash, and a prospect like Castillo (or similar) for Leake make some sense for LAA and SEA.
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Dipoto wheels and deals big contracts like a used car salesman, so I'm sure he'd listen to scenarios involving Leake.

You’re James McCann’s agent and the White Sox offer a 4yr/20mm extension. What do you say?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
That would be quite an unusual contract (that length at such a low AAV). In some ways it'd be tempting. Think I'd lean no but would depend upon the player's needs. I don't think he's going to keep this up. But he's already more or less guaranteed to earn like 4 mil next season via arbitration and only just turned 29. So I'd be inclined to roll the dice a little given that he already has a decent amount of cash banked. It's pretty easy to foresee multi-year deals at the 5 mil AAV range even if he settles in as a solid platoon catcher.
If he's more than that, he could easily beat that offer. Interesting scenario though!

Could the Braves land a decent rental reliever for Duvall who is raking in AAA?
Jeffrey Todd
3:20
Yeah I think so. Decent and rental are important modifiers here. There are probably teams that would like to take a shot on Duvall. We already know the Braves valued him enough to pay him all year so somebody believes in the talent. I don't think teams are going to be swayed too much by the AAA numbers but obviously he'd be a guy that quite a few clubs would plug right into their MLB outfields.

Why do people talk about Trevor Bauer like he's an ace? Last year looks more like it should be considered an outlier than the expectation.
Jeffrey Todd
3:22
He's still doing some of the things he showed when he ticked up last year (swinging strike boost, though it is down a bit). Even if he's not an ace, he's a very good pitcher in a market that would have very few of them.
Todd Jeffries
3:23
What type of return could the Pirates get for Marte? Top 10 overall prospect, from the right team of course?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Specific valuations are always going to be team-dependent (both teams), but that seems like the sort of asking price the Bucs would need to move him with two more affordable years remaining. You could argue he's not quite worth that but why would PIT take less? The fact that he doesn't walk isn't great, but he's a really good player in a very good contract situation.

Is Frazier for Boyd a fair trade? and who says no?
Jeffrey Todd
3:25
Frazier is certainly a replacement for Castellanos, in good and bad ways. Really can't imagine the Tigers doing that.

3:26
Will haniger get traded or does his injury prevent that from happening?
Jeffrey Todd
3:26
Definitely don't expect a trade.
Nats Nate
3:26
Wouldn't Rendon remain a re-signing candidate even if the Nats did trade him?
Jeffrey Todd
3:27
Sure, but there's a psychological breaking point that matters. Jon Lester spoke about that. Obviously it's quite a different scenario to talk about a guy as an extension candidate vs re-signing on the open market, but ... look, they did it with Harper. The more important thing, anyway, is the fact that they won't want to punt on contention unless they absolutely have to.

She said my flight was starting to board, but then they didn't open the door and people just lining up. WTH?

Never line up. Why the rush to get on an airplane that is sitting there? Just makes the flight longer.
