I'm back with a random chat slot! Still need to sort out a consistent time, but there's some logistics still being sorted. So, for regular readers, thanks for your patience.
For everyone that found their way to the room ... I'll leave some time for everyone to drop their evening plans once they realize this is happening. Go ahead and start sending in questions and we'll get rolling shortly.

What would match up for the Pirates and Mets on a Marte deal?
Jeffrey Todd
7:52
You can imagine some interest in Dom Smith on the part of the Bucs. But he's not likely to drive that deal on his own ... and there'll be lots and lots of other interested teams. Marte really stands out as a target on this market. That'll be a big move for new GM Ben Cherington to make.

7:52
Angels: what arm will they target? Cahill and Harvey types clearly fell flat
Jeffrey Todd
7:53
That doesn't mean they won't be in on that part of the market again. But they'll also be going for more. I fully expect them to come away with multiple starters, at least one big name.

Can I get Jo Adell for Willson Contreras and Jose Quintana?
Jeffrey Todd
7:54
Much as Contreras is a really big piece -- and make no mistake, he is -- I am not sure the Halos will part with 7 seasons of possible superstardom.
7:55
I think they will see Adell as potentially a big piece of the 2020 puzzle.

The Cubs are at a crossroads. If you’re the GM, are you blowing up this team or going all-in with the core and some outside adds?
Jeffrey Todd
7:56
Not sure I understand why some seem so anxious to blow it up. Hard to trade a Kris Bryant while trying to contend. The issue they are facing is their top talent pipeline was tapped for trades ... how different would this club look with Gleyber Torres and Eloy Jimenez?
But that was the choice they made. And while some guys have perhaps not fully blossomed into the stars they might've hoped for, I think the core has mostly been everything it could've been expected to be.
7:57
I guess some repositioning is possible, but to me I'd rather take the attitude that now is the time to spend to supplement. That was made somewhat inevitable when they pushed those trade chips in. Go for it while working on a few extensions (Contreras and Baez?).
7:58
It is really hard to keep adding guys one after the next to keep a contending core but it can be done. (See Nats, Dodgers for recent examples.)

Does a Josh Hader trade make sense for the Brewers? A lot of holes to fill and a weak farm system to replenish, but they’ve shown a knack for finding good relievers out of thin air.
Jeffrey Todd
7:59
Can't rule out anything absolutely, but I think he really helps them avoid spending on the rotation for wins. Not sure I see that being the right approach unless they are bowled over.

Royals new owner is official... will he open up spending?   Who is the biggest name they might realistically go after?
Jeffrey Todd
8:00
I was sort of expecting to see the Royals do some targeted spending -- or, at least, bidding. But the indications I've been reading/sensing from the KC media are that they don't expect to do much at all.
8:01
Think: a repeat of last winter, generally, but with Alex Gordon occupying the Billy Hamilton slot

The Dodgers have quietly extended their baseball president Andrew Friedman after 5 first-place finishes in his 5 years there. It’s so quiet they don’t seem likely to say how long the new deal is for, and they just may not announce it at all.

do you think Bautista will play another game with an MLB organization?
Jeffrey Todd
8:02
I don't. But it's not entirely impossible.

8:02
Does a 5/100 extension sound reasonable for JT Realmuto or does the Grandal signing drive up the cost of a JTR extension?
Jeffrey Todd
8:04
Not sure the Grandal deal changes the picture. We've seen 5/85 type contracts in FA (McCann, Martin) and even bigger AAV extensions (Yadi, Buster, Mauer). I don't think JTR is going to get into that massive, full-career deal type range. At first blush, 5/100 seems reasonable ... maybe a bit more?
8:05
One thing about extensions, especially: you have to leave an even wider spread of "market value" than you do in thinking about FA, because it's not open bidding and individual guys will have very different motivations.

Could David Price he traded this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
8:06
I don't see a lot of avenues to accomplishing that, if only because ... where's the motivation for another club to work really hard to structure something that makes sense? But it will be interesting to see if Bloom somehow concocts something like the Adrian Gonzalez reset.
8:08
That'd be this one for those too young to remember! https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/red-sox-dodgers-complete-nine-p...

What do you see as some back up plans for the Nationals if their unable to sign the big two. Thanks
Jeffrey Todd
8:09
All bets would be off. They have immense payroll space to work with. Cole would be on the table. Or multiple quality starters. Donaldson, Moustakas, any number of trade scenarios.
Maybe that's how you get to some wild trade involving David Price, I don't know. But it would really throw open a wild and interesting offseason, I think.
A’s rumors?
8:10
Pomeranz?  Hudson?
Jeffrey Todd
8:10
Pom is going to be very spendy. I am more and more bullish on big earnings for him the more I think about it.
Hudson won't be super expensive, I don't think, and we have seen the A's spend on that range of reliever, but they can probably make better use of their limited funds.
8:11
I wonder if they will be better served adding a couple fairly unexciting relievers just to ensure they have things shored up ... wouldn't hurt to have some that can handle multiple innings.

8:12
We whiffed on our top target (Grandal), you buying our pivot to Wheeler? Where does the offense come from?
Jeffrey Todd
8:12
Dick Williams and Nick Krall, top Reds execs, here with us tonight. Welcome, gents.
8:13
If they are looking to efficiently allocate dollars, sure, why not Wheeler? He's going to be bid up. Huge interest. But hey, put your bid in and see what the market does ... worst case you boost the price for a competitor and have them allocate their money there while you spend elsewhere.
