Another "good problem to have" type of scenario here, since if the veteran starting five stays healthy and effective to the extent that the younger guys aren't getting many innings....I can't imagine the Jays would be too upset about that, right?

That said, there is little chance everyone gets through 2020 without the injured list.  The Jays' younger arms will get their share of chances, and it's worth noting that none of them really did much last year to set themselves apart as deserving of more innings

Whats the story behind Larry Walkers atrocius spongebob shirt?
Mark P
11:55
Your autocorrect must've changed "awesome" to "atrocius"
CSN
11:56
Do you rhink Theo and Jed were blindsided by the financial contraints the last two years...the Cubs could afford to blow by the luxury tax
Mark P
11:57
Not to totally excuse ownership, but the Cubs' front office didn't make things easy on themselves by tying up a lot of money in big contracts that haven't entirely worked out.

That said, the Cubs (like any team) can easily afford to pay the relatively minor luxury tax every single year.
Buster Posey
11:58
Do you see me having a bounce back season or was 2019 (perhaps even 2018) the beginning of a sharp decline?
Mark P
11:59
Don't forget that Posey underwent hip surgery in 2018, which impacted his performance across two seasons.  I can see him playing better in 2020, though not at his old elite levels
Nick
11:59
What's the most ridiculous trade suggestion you've received in this chat so far?
Mark P
12:00
Believe me, the truly absurd ones I don't even bother answering.
Tribe Fan
12:00
do you see the Tribe trading any young arms to fill other holes?
Mark P
12:01
Probably not.  That young pitching is such a big asset for Cleveland they they're going to hang onto those arms for as long as they can
SteveM
12:01
What happened to the adoration of the 20 game winner?
Mark P
12:02
The general realization that wins are a largely meaningless stat

12:04
Would the Twins work a trade around Trevor Larnach to the Pirates for Chris Archer?
Mark P
12:05
Larnach is the kind of very good-but-not quite elite prospect I could see the Twins moving.  They'd certainly be more open to dealing him than Lewis, Kirilloff, Graterol.

That said, Larnach is also good enough that if I'm Minnesota, I probably feel I can aim a bit higher than Chris Archer
D Braves Fan
12:06
recent comments from Braves ownerhsip suggest a willingness to take on more salary? Best bet a FA signing or a big time blockbuster?
Mark P
12:07
A big trade could still happen, but Anthopoulos likes to keep a bit of money in reserve for possible midseason deals.  He could wait until July to explore his next big swap
Chris
12:09
Why hasnt there been more Marco Gonzales rumors? He's got weird stuff but the results are good and the mariners are obvious sellers. Isn't he way better than Boyd/ray?
Mark P
12:09
From everything we've heard about Gonzales, the M's have no interest in trading him.  Another club would have to give up a ton to inspire a deal

I just checked.  Todd Helton put up Scott Rolen numbers away from Coors.  He seems to me to be the biggest snub.
Mark P
12:11
Helton is another player I'd vote into the HOF.  I do think he'll eventually get in, however.  Maybe now that Walker is in, voters will stop putting so much of an onus on games at Coors Field
Baseball fan
12:12
Am I wrong thinking a prospect is just a prospect?  After the new MLB top 100 rankings came out many prospets dropped in position or fell off.  Is that not indication enough that a prospect is not a MLB star?  I don't understand the new perspective that holds prospects on the same level as MLB all stars.
Mark P
12:13
It should be noted that these top 100 lists aren't set in stone.  MLB.com, Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, Keith Law, Fangraphs....they all adjust these rankings constantly throughout the year.  Sometimes one hot month is all the difference between a guy being a "top 100 prospect" or landing 101st on the list.
Jays
12:14
Catchers being prized as they are, how do you seeing Toronto's impending bottleneck (Jansen/ McGuire/Kirk/Adams/Moreno) playing over the next in 2 years? Who are the keepers?
Mark P
12:15
Speaking as a Jays fan who has seen many Toronto "catchers of the future" go nowhere, I'll believe it's a bottleneck when I see it
Moosebreath
12:15
As a non-Yankee fan, I simply cannot understand the amount of spilled electrons over how unfair it is that Jeter has only the second highest percentage of Hall of Fame votes of all time.  He is not the second greatest player of all time.  He is not even the second greatest shortstop of all time.  Can you explain it?
Mark P
12:17
I was hoping that Rivera's election would end all the silliness about the unanimous voting, but oh well.

There are scores of players in Cooperstown that should have been unanimous votes, Jeter among them.  It is ridiculous that it took until 2018 for a perfect vote to happen, and it continues to be ridiculous that it might be a long time before we get another

It's hard for a Giants fan to swallow, but the combination of Zaidi restocking the farm system (5 picks in the first 87) and finding one year reclamation projects that can be turned into more prospects during the season may start to work fast..just not in 2020
Mark P
12:21
I think a lot of Giants fans (and fans in general around the game) didn't realize how deep a hole their team was in following the 2018 season.  Lots of big contracts, and very few of those players playing well enough to be trade chips.

Zaidi seems to be doing what he can to rebuild without going into a full tear-it-down type of rebuild
Vincent
12:21
Is Wellington Castillo to Nats finalized? If so, another smart under-the-radar Rizzo move. You can never have enough depth at catcher.
Mark P
12:21
I don't believe it's officially official yet, but I agree, good move from the Nats
SF GM
12:22
Does Bart push to Make the team in ST. Can i move on from Belt and move Buster to 1st?
Mark P
12:23
I don't think we'll see Joey Bart quite as early as Opening Day, but it seems like Belt stands out as an obvious trade chip at some point.  Could be that the Giants start to more fervently shop Belt if he gets off to a good start in 2020
Joshua
12:24
I am still shocked that the Nats are planning on going into the season as the reigning World Series Champs by not replacing Rendon's bat. I know the bullpen is better, Thames is an upgrade over Adams, Castro should be an upgrade over Dozier, and a full season of Cabrera should definitely help with versatility and depth. However, a Kieboom led trade package for Kris Bryant just makes too much sense to me from both sides. Does this have any chance of still happening? Thanks.
Mark P
12:25
Doesn't seem like the Nats would move Kieboom as part of a Bryant deal, but D.C. does make sense as a candidate to swing a deal with Chicago.  We'll find out in 2029 when Bryant's grievance is settled
12:27
Time to wrap things up.  I'll be back next weekend with another chat, though the time is TBD.  Stay tuned!
