Is it Saturday or is it....Chaterday?!

Let's try to forget that brutal pun with some baseball questions
9:52
Sorry for the delay, we had a move break just as the chat got started.  Sean Gilmartin to the Rays, y'all:

Whats the latest regarding the big trades?
Hurry Up Red Sox
9:53
what do you think happens with Mookie?
John
9:53
Does the Betts trade go through even if Minny pulls out?
Mark P
9:53
Your guess is as good as mine as to when we'll hear official word on the Dodgers/Red Sox/Twins/Angels trades, though the latest feeling is that there isn't much danger of everything falling apart
9:54
If a team (like Minnesota) actually did pull out, there's a chance the Dodgers and BoSox could work out another arrangement, but it would be awfully hard to rebuilt that house of cards once the whole thing falls apart

With my new found payroll flexibility, why not "buy" some prospects by taking on guys like Wil Myers or Jed Lowrie (who actually wouldn't even be a bad fit assuming is not horrible)?
Mark P
9:55
I strongly doubt the Sox are going to all this trouble to clear payroll space and avoid the luxury tax just to add a "bad" contract like Myers or Lowrie to the books

Cubs trade Bryant to SD for Medina and Tramell?
Mark P
9:56
Cubs would want more than that

Slow start this morning, can ya believe only 6 days before Catchers and Pitchers report!

It indeed feels like this offseason has flown by
Scott
9:57
What do you think gets added to the Sox for the mookie deal
Mark P
9:58
Maybe the Twins or Dodgers (or even the Angels?) throw another minor prospect Boston's way, or maybe someone throws them a few extra million dollars.  As mentioned, there isn't much chance this whole thing falls apart since we haven't heard anything implying the Sox are so concerned with Graterol's medicals that they don't want him whatsoever

I don't subscribe to the WSJ.  What exactly happened here?  Just that Luhnow knew?
Mark P

Our own Jeff Todd summarized some of the key points of the story here: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/02/new-details-emerge-on-astros-si...
10:01
In essence, the big takeaway is that the front office was very aware of the plan and (somewhat hilariously) even called it "Codebreaker."  I guess calling it "ILLEGAL PLAN THAT WILL GET US ALL FIRED" would have been too on the nose
Puig your friend
10:02
Rays rumored to have interest in Puig. Seems like an odd fit to me. Thoughts?
Mark P
10:03
It makes that the Rays would check in on a good player whose asking price may be coming way down given his long stay on the market.  They don't appear to have a clear spot for Puig, though stranger things have happened.
Game Dude
10:05
Why has the market been dead silent for guys like Cameron Maybin and Jarrod Dyson?
Mark P
10:06
I expect both to get minor league deals at some point, as teams start to make final preparations for Spring Training or start sifting through outfield options during camp
Pete
10:06
Can anyone in the possible red sox mega deal shut it down because they are fed up waiting
Mark P
10:07
It can't be entirely ruled out, though it would be a major public relations black eye.  it could be argued that all four teams involved have gone so far down the rabbit hole now that none can entirely pull out.
Red Sox fan
10:09
Red Sox fans always over apeciate marginal players ( JBJ , Andrew Benentendi) and Under value Superstars ( Nomar, Mookie) But i have to ask , was this more about getting out feom Under Price and the luxury tax or just not wanting to pay Mookie. If they are not going to pay Mookie , who will they pay?
Mark P
10:10
I think if another team or teams had offered to take at least one of Price, Eovaldi, or Bradley in another trade earlier this offseason, Betts would still in a Red Sox uniform on Opening Day.  It seems Boston felt they had to do go to the extreme of dealing Betts to gain salary relief, which (as many have pointed out) is kind of ludicrous given the revenues that the Sox generate.
10:11
That said, I would speculate that the Sox were pessimistic about their chances of re-signing Betts next winter, so they figured they could get something of value by moving him now.

Is it reasonable to hope for back to back gold gloves for White Sox 2B? Or will Madrigal need some adjusting time?
Mark P
10:15
Probably a tall order for a rookie, but Madrigal is said to be a strong fielder.  Wouldn't be shocked if a Gold Glove is eventually in his future
Joe
10:15
If the deals go through do you think the angels have done enough to catch the A’s and Astros?
Mark P
10:17
Their pitching is still a concern, though I think people underrate the overall value of Stripling, Bundy, and Teheran just because none are aces.  The Angels' rotation needed a lot of work and they're certainly in a much better place pitching-wise now than at the end of the 2019 season.

Overall I'd still have to rank the Halos third in the AL West, with the caveat that I don't know how much the Astros will be impacted by all the offseason controversy (plus on-field losses like Cole)

10:18
As a Brewers fan, what kind of dropoff should I expect from Grandal to Narvaez? What are your other general thoughts on the Brewers heading into the season? I’m starting to feel like Avi Garcia was an overpay.
Mark P
10:20
It was an interesting offseason for the Brewers, who have quietly overhauled a good chunk of their roster.  It's a risk in going with a platoon-heavy attack rather than having the stable everyday presence of, say, a Mike Moustakas, but we've seen how much a plan can work (i.e. in Tampa Bay)
10:24
Sorry for the delay, had to fill out the Gilmartin post and answer a phone call.
Magic Johnson
10:24
Once finalized, how high is the pressure to re-sign Betts for my Dodgers? Contract anywhere near Trout’s?
Mark P
10:26
The Dodgers must be prepared for the possibility that Betts leaves, and while I'd still expect him to test free agency after all this time, I wouldn't be shocked if LA made a big extension offer in Spring Training.
10:27
Based on the numbers rumored to have been thrown around between Betts' camp and the Red Sox, Betts wants a deal north of $400MM to forego free agency.  Those types of major signings haven't been part of Andrew Friedman's M.O. since running the Dodgers, but if there was ever a player worth making a splashy signing for, Betts is it

The three WS rings will get Bochy into Cooperstown
