Good evening!  I predict at least a dozen different "Mason Saunders" screen names during tonight's chat, let's see if that's an over or an under

Wil the Padres trade Myers before the season starts?
Mark P
9:11
The latest reports had them in talks with the Red Sox, of all teams, even after Mookie Betts had already been dealt.

I'd say there's probably about a 50-50 chance Myers is dealt, because as large as his contract is, San Diego is better equipped than almost anyone to add prospects as sweeteners
Cubbie Nut
9:11
Who will be the opening day 2nd baseman for the cubs?
Mark P
9:12
Our own Anthony Franco explored the Cubs' 2B options earlier today: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/02/camp-battles-cubs-second-base-m...

My personal guess is that it'll probably be Kipnis

9:13
Over/Under May 1st when Jo Adell will be called up?
Mark P
9:14
I'd say past May 1.  Though the Pederson trade fell though, it tells me that Angels aren't satisfied with their current OF mix and might add another veteran before Opening Day.  That doesn't leave much room for Adell, not to mention the service-time considerations
Senzel burner
9:14
if Senzel was indeed part of trade discussions with Padres and Red Sox who could you see the Reds getting in return?
Mark P
9:16
Cincinnati's biggest holes are at shortstop and catcher, but the Padres and Red Sox aren't great trade partners for either position (obviously SD isn't moving Tatis, and Boston isn't moving Bogaerts or Vazquez).

Not really sure what this kind of a trade would be worth for the Reds, but I suspect there would be a lot of moving parts to this that we're not aware of, maybe with a fourth team also involved

What do you think about the Astros team
Mark P
9:18
From a pure baseball perspective, losing Cole will make them a worse team, not to mention all the other uncertainty in their rotation beyond Verlander/Greinke.

We're also in uncharted territory as to how the scandal and the months of booing/heckling are going to impact the Astros.  It could take an emotional toll, or it could be a bonding mechanism for the roster.
AJ Preller
9:19
Shouldn't I be trying to trade Hosmer instead of Myers?  No trade aside, who has been the worse acquisition?
Mark P
9:19
Hosmer has a no-trade clause, and since he is owed more money, he's a tougher sell anyway.
9:20
As to which was worse, the Hosmer signing seemed like a bad idea when it happened, in no small part because it seemed to force Myers off of first base and leave him a man without a position.
Hulk Hogan
9:21
Is Kieboom likely to get a real chance to win the third base job, outright?
Mark P
9:21
The Nats have been pretty open to giving young players starting jobs if they feel they're capable, so Kieboom can probably control his own fate with a big spring
Brodie
9:22
Since I signed Matt Adams, does that mean Dominic Smith is getting traded?  They are essentially the same player and neither will play alot behind Alonso...
Mark P
9:23
Adams has been a Met for a few weeks now, and there hasn't been any Smith trade buzz yet.  You'd think a deal would've happened more immediately if it was going to happen, or Smith would have been dealt first and then Adams signed

9:23
Who will be the opening day 2nd basemen for Oak is the real question
Mark P
9:23
Hey, we've got a Camp Battles post about that situation as well!

AL Central
9:24
how are you ranking the AL Central this season from first to last?
Mark P
9:24
I'd go Minnesota, Cleveland, Chicago, KC, Detroit.  The White Sox might be this year's "big offseason winner who might still be a season away from really contending."
The Dyslexic Voice of Dog
9:25
so if it was common knowledge across baseball that the Astros were up to no good, why did a player ring the alarm and not an organization? Is it perhaps that other clubs have their own skeletons and didn’t wish to be scrutinized?
Mark P
9:25
I believe it has been reported that other teams did go to the league about the Astros, but no action was taken.
Dustin May
9:26
How long will I be stuck in OKC? I think I showed I’m ready last season.
Mark P
9:26
The way the Dodgers regularly shuffle their rotation, not long
El Loco
9:27
Does a Realmuto extension get done or does it go to a offseason bidding war between the Phillies, Angels etc. ?
Mark P
9:28
My guess is that JTR and the Phillies get something worked out.  They've both been talking about an extension for months, and the Phils aren't shy about spending
Mad Ropin Saunders
9:29
Chances the Rays get to the World Series in 2020?
Mark P
9:29
They are very legitimate contenders.  You still have to consider NYY the favorites in the AL East and the AL as a whole, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Tampa made it out of the playoffs

What kind of prospects would the Padres have to give up to a team willing to take on the entire payroll of Wil Myers?  Lets remember that the Angels gave up last years top 15 draft pick just to get rid of $13 million of Zach Cozarts contract and a few years ago the Pirates had to give up two of their top 10 prospects when they had one of the top farm systems in the industry just to get rid of $18 of Francisco Liriano's contract.
Mark P
9:32
If the Padres were to attach one of their real blue chip prospects (i.e. Gore or Patino) to Myers, another team would be willing to eat at least two-thirds of that contract.  So a package of Gore or Patino, plus maybe two more ok but lesser prospects would get it done.

Not that I think San Diego would go to this length.  It would be a real embarrassment to draft a potential star like Gore, and then trade him before he even debuts in the bigs just to get a bad signings off the books
AA
9:33
Does a trade for Joey Wendle make sense to deal away from the infield surplus for the Rays and give the Braves another option at 3rd/good utility guy when Riley is ready?
Mark P
9:34
Sure, except I'm not sure the Rays would be willing to deal Wendle, nor would they necessarily consider their infield situation to be a "surplus."  There are a lot of young players and guys coming off injuries on Tampa's roster, don't forget, so the Rays probably want as many depth options as possible before they start thinking about who might be expendable
Woody and Buzz
9:34
Best Disney/Pixar movie?
Mark P
9:34
Lots of great choices, but I'd say the Incredibles.
RoxFan
9:35
Why must the Rockies make me sad
Mark P
9:36
The Rockies have made a lot of weird decisions over the last year.  I fear it's going to get worse before it gets better in Colorado
JA
9:36
How good are the Twins?
Mark P
9:37
That lineup is downright scary.  I'm not 100 percent sold on their pitching staff, but it's at least a decent rotation, and that might be all the Twins need if they're scoring ten runs a game
