Hi everyone, hope everyone is keeping safe and taking every precaution during this pandemic.  And, since we're all indoors, what better way to pass the time than a baseball chat?

Best guess on how this will effect service time?
Mark P
7:11
This seems like the toughest hurdle the union and the league will have to jump, and maybe some kind of prorated formula might be best?  But even that creates a lot of logistical issues.  It's hard to guess.

What’s the minimum number of games MLB will considering playing before they outright cancel the season?
Mark P
7:13
A season of less than, say, 54 games (a third of the regular schedule) might not be worth it.  But then again, what is "worth it," I guess.
7:14
Assuming health conditions improve enough to safely start playing by August or September, MLB getting back on the field for some type of action would be such a big relief for fans

Pinochle or chess?

7:15
I'm definitely a chess guy

If no 2020 season, do the A's lose their window or do they just have a shortened one?
Mark P
7:16
Given Semien's one year remaining under contract, the A's are one of the teams most directly impacted by the service-time discussions and the possibility of a lost season.  It isn't to say their window is closed given the amount of young pitching on the roster and Chapman/Olson both being controlled for a while yet, but the A"s were definitely lining up 2020 as their year

I can’t see the season being played this year. Please give me hope.

A general message of hope, for baseball and otherwise...
7:19
  1. medical science is working overtime to figure out a cure/treatment/vaccine for this virus
  2. look at how society has already re-adjusted itself in less than two weeks as a response to this new reality
  3. for all of the scary news out there, there is even more news about people coming together to help and take care of others, and how people are taking responsible measures to help limit the spread of the disease

Worst trade in MLB history? My nominations: Mets trade Seaver to Reds, Mets trade Ryan to Angles.
Mark P
7:20
Just guessing, you're a Mets fan?  :)  The fun part about baseball is that fans of any team can immediately summon up several "worst trade ever" candidates from their very own team

Any news about the draft?
Mark P
7:22
Not yet, it's one of many issues on the to-do list.  If I had to guess, they'll still have it but maybe push it back to July or something.  There might be fewer logistical hurdles in a draft with less scouting info than there would be of not having a 2020 draft whatsoever

Assuming there is an MLB season this year (of any length), did the Cardinals make enough off-season moves to win the NL Central again?
Mark P
7:23
Their lack of offense is a big concern, but then again, every NL Central team has holes.  It's a fascinating division to watch.

Should Sale of done the TJS last August when he went down? Had he gone under the knife then he could have been good to go next March 2021!
Mark P
7:24
It's easy to say that in hindsight, but don't forget, Tommy John surgery is a major deal.  No player is going to just waive off over a season of their career unless they absolutely have to, and as of last August, there wasn't indication that Sale would eventually need to go under the knife

Do you think the sense of community from this crisis will allow Red Sox fans and Yankees fans to co-exist?
Mark P
7:26
Yankees fans: I hope not
Red Sox fans: Agreed.  And Jeter is overrated.
Yankees fans: Papi is overrated.
Red Sox fans: %)#%*#($*#
Yankees fans: %#)(%*#(%#

Thanks for the chat, How long is the mets competitive window (it seems to be just opening as they have a few nice prospects coming up Gimenez,Peterson...)?
Mark P
7:28
If you remove the fact that the Mets seem to make things harder on themselves with all the off-the-field weirdness, they have quite an interesting roster.  I'm not super-high on their farm system (the Cano/Diaz and Stroman trades thinned out the list of prospects), but their big league team could certainly contend in 2020

Who would win this matchup? Babe Ruth the pitcher vs. Babe Ruth the hitter
Mark P
7:30
It's a hit by pitch, which leads to a confusing bench-clearing brawl.

Serious answer: probably Ruth the hitter has the edge just because Ruth was GOAT-level and Pitcher Ruth was "merely" very good

Give me a current player who hasn't won ANY MVP (playoff MVPs included) yet, who will be elected into the HOF.

Will Jose Ramirez continue to slump or do you see a bounce-back year?
Mark P
7:33
It seemed like Ramirez pretty definitively snapped out of his slump halfway through last season.  You can't be quite 100 percent sold on Ramirez just due to the weirdness of his late 2018/early 2019 cold streak, but I'm assuming he'll be a pretty good player this year

Could Major League Baseball use the time off from the hiatus to work on the next CBA? The last thing baseball fans want to see after this is a strike . . .
Mark P
7:35
This would be a fine idea, and it would help to have some kind of foundational elements of a CBA in place that can then be adjusted as players and owners get a better sense of what the world will be like after the pandemic passes.  These deals are hard enough to negotiate even before you deal with a black swan event like this virus threat

Would MLB consider something as radical as only having play within divisions if the season is radically shortened to save travel and increase the amount of games played? Granted they would have to blow up the original schedule
Mark P
7:36
I think the schedule is getting blown up regardless, so a division-only idea is as good as any.

Why is Gil Hodges not in the HOF?
Mark P

Good question.  He is long overdue for induction, in my books

Any word on Gary Sanchez? Was out for a fever before ST was suspended, and no word since. I'm all for patient privacy, I just hope the kid is okay.
