If everyone takes a hit this year and again next year because the virus is still plaguing us, do you see any franchises going into Chapter 11 bankruptcy?
Mark P
7:18
First of all, I tend to think there's enough money involved in the sport that nobody is in danger of going bankrupt based on baseball revenue alone.  Secondly, if such an extreme situation happened, I'd imagine the league would step in to keep a franchise afloat in order to spare the public embarrassment.

Every player drafted in the NBA is a freshman or from overseas, so there's not years of built-in familiarity with them anymore either
Mark P
7:19
Fair point, though even one year of Zion Williamson was enough to get fans hyped.

IF there is a season with both a universal DH and expansion of playoffs, do you see both staying long term, one of them (which) or neither?
Mark P
7:20
I think the universal DH is the likelier of the two, though an expanded playoff isn't far behind given how much of baseball's TV money is tied up in the postseason.

How do you think it will end up working with service time if there isn't a season?
Mark P
7:22
As per the March agreement between the league and the MLBPA, players would still get credit for full service time if the 2020 season was canceled, depending on how much service time the players earned in 2019.

Can the taxi squads play games against each other?  Say the Nationals and Orioles are playing at Nationals Park.  Could their taxi squads play each other up at Camden Yeards, for example?  What about the rest of the minor leaguers?  If they're in the spring training complexes, can they get together for exhibition games all summer?
Mark P
7:24
Some sort of unofficial "minor league schedule" would seem like a possibility.  You'd think players would need a way to remain in proper game shape, rather than just practicing and playing intra-squad games for weeks.

Since the MLBPA has been gotten destroyed at the negotiating table over the last 2 CBAs, does it make sense for all players to "buy back" some wins for them? Essentially they say they won't take a dime this year from the owners, but trade that for big wins in the next CBA?
Mark P
7:25
That would be a bold move, yet how would that "trade" work?  The next CBA would have to be negotiated immediately, since players wouldn't just take the owners' word for it that some "wins" would be promised.  Given how we're running out of time to launch a 2020 season, I doubt there's enough time to work out the next CBA as well

Most likely to be traded if their team unexpectedly tanks?

How About That?
7:30
What if the owners agree to pay the players their full proportional salaries, as long as some is deferred?  Both sides can claim they won.
Mark P
7:31
Deferred salaries have been mentioned by many parties as a potential compromise, though as per some reports, some owners are resistant to the idea since they see it as just putting off a problem into the future.

Is Tony Clark bad at his job? Or is his job just extremely difficult? Neither? Mix of both?
Mark P
7:34
His job is extraordinarily difficult, and it was made even harder by the unforeseen and unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.

That being said, I was saying this over a year ago in chats --- I'm surprised Tony Clark retained his job given how the MLBPA got burned in the last set of collective bargaining talks.

Best baseball card that you own ?
Mark P
7:36
I had about a two-year window in my childhood when I was obsessed with baseball cards, though the fad quickly passed for me.  Unfortunately, since my peak of interest was in the early 90's when everyone was really into baseball cards as an investment, I doubt I have any of actual financial value.

In terms of which is coolest, however, the Score All-Star "big head" cards!

How will this decision actually be made? Are the terms voted on? Seems like the situation is prime to have players on different side and owners on different sides.
Mark P
7:40
This indeed seems to be the case, as Buster Olney wrote just today that some owners would prefer to cancel the season whereas others want to get it going.  Player-wise, I think the majority absolutely want to get onto the field, though not if the concerns over both health/safety and fair pay aren't met

What do you think about universal DH, im tired of seeing pitchers trying to hit!
Mark P
7:41
I'm biased as a fan of an American League team my whole life, so I've had no problem with the DH and prefer it to pitchers hitting.

Any chance MLB can come up with a one time fix in which playoff TV revenue is redistributed to boost financially strapped teams? That way prorated salaries get preserved and teams genuinely struggling get a lifeline.
Mark P
7:43
Here's another avenue where there is division amongst the owners....since their books aren't open to each other either, there's no way to know which teams are "genuinely struggling."

It's already a known fact that some bigger-market clubs are annoyed with revenue sharing endeavors, since some smaller-market teams are accused of just taking those shared revenues and not re-investing into the team.  I can't see those same richer clubs being willing to give up playoff TV revenues for similar reasons

What are the chances that the Yankees are able to keep all 3 of Lemahieu, Tanaka, and Paxton
Mark P
7:48
I'd be surprised if they all stayed, though given the circumstances of the 2020-21 free agent class, it can't be entirely ruled out.  If there's a sense that there won't be much money being thrown around on free agents, any of the three could opt to accept a one-year qualifying offer to remain in NY and then try again in free agency in the 2021-22 offseason (when things could somewhat be back to normal?)
Ruined?
7:48
Not a chance a single player opts out now, is there?  If so, please state a case where they could get more money.
Mark P
7:49
Off the top of my head, I can't think of any.  Certainly none of the players on big-money future contracts (Stanton, Castellanos, etc.) will opt out
Mariner
7:50
Do you think players shot down the first revenue proposal floated by the owners because they are against any attempt to link salary to revenue?
Mark P
7:50
To be clear, that 50-50 revenue split was only floated, as you said.  It wasn't actually "proposed" officially.

Any good classic games I could watch without spoiling what happens? I'm needing sone baseball but can't get myself to watch games I k ow the result of
Mark P
7:52
Hmm, maybe that's what ESPN/MLB Network/etc. should be doing --- advertising a "mystery game."  Promote it as "something cool and famous happens in this game, but you won't know it until you see it."
