Just skip the regular season & go straight to the playoffs. All thirty teams play. 😆
Mark P

Owners: So you see, since EVERY game is now technically a postseason game, you need to pay ten times as much in rights fees.

Networks: Um....

What do you think is the absolutely drop dead date for us to begin having some sort of a season...short of something like teams playing a 30 game schedule?
Mark P
8:36
If nothing is figured out by July 1, I doubt anything is happening

How much longer/how much patience does Rogers have with the Shapiro regime in Toronto before getting fed up and making a change/cleaning house?  Shapiro hasn't produced any real success in either Cleveland or Toronto - so he is maybe overrated?
Mark P
8:38
Shapiro was hired to oversee a rebuild and got an unexpected contender for his first year-plus, spent probably a year too long trying to sustain that contender, but ultimately went all-in on remaking the system.  Now that the Jays have this great young core group breaking into the big leagues, you really think it's time for Shapiro/Atkins to be fired?

I see in various reports that Manfred sends letters to Clark about proposals/counter proposals. Do they mean email? Why don't they Zoom like all other quarantined Americans and get this done?
Mark P
8:41
My assumption is that they mean e-mail, and Manfred & Clark aren't sending letters back and forth on ravens like in Game Of Thrones.

Lots of things about the MLB/union negotiating process don't make much sense to me, between the seeming lack of face-to-face (even on Zoom) negotiating and the incredibly snippy letters back and forth

What should I do about Molina? Do I be sure to keep him in a Cardinals uniform the rest of his career, possibly stunting the growth of Knizner or other catching prospects? Or do I let him walk and prepare for the backlash from fans?
Mark P
8:44
I ultimately think the two sides will end up working out an extension.  If the lockdown hadn't happened, Molina and the Cards probably might have worked out a deal before Opening Day.

My prediction is Molina is the starter in 2021 and then it's a timeshare in 2022.  If the NL has the DH available, that provides another way for Molina to get some playing time
Re: Free Agents
8:44
IMHO, the REAL news is going to be the 2nd and 3rd time arbitration guys. They're going to absolutely clobbered statistically, and look very unattractive anyway to teams that would rather go cheaper.
Mark P
8:45
Yep, there will be a blizzard of non-tenders this winter
N
8:45
What will the Cubs do with their new DH position?  It's easy to plug in Schwarber, but that leaves a thinner outfield (no pun intended) with Almora or Souza filling his spot.
Mark P
8:46
They probably won't have a full-time DH, and will just rotate a number of guys through the spot

Why are some draft picks getting so much less than their slot value?
Mark P
8:49
Some players indicated to teams before the draft that they'd be willing to sign for less, just because being drafted offers more security than the uncertainty of this year's enormous undrafted free agent market.  And, a lot of these below-slot deals are still paying a lot more than the $20K limit for undrafted free agents.
8:50
Also, some drafted players have less leverage....they're out of college eligibility, they're injured, etc.
1-1 player?
8:50
What is a 1-1 player? I hear it all the time on this site in reference to the draft.
Mark P
8:50
The place who was the 1st pick of the 1st round (i.e. Torkelson).
8:51
So a 1-20 player is the guy who was drafted 20th overall, for instance.  Or a 3-73 is the guy picked in the third round, 73rd overall
Best 1-1
8:52
Best 1-1 from last two decades?  Griffey all time best 1-1?
Mark P
8:53
Mauer is the WAR leader from the last two decades, though there's lots of time for Harper, Cole, Correa, even Strasburg to catch up.

All-time, it's got to be Griffey or A-Rod, with Chipper Jones also right up there

In your opinion, how badly are guys like Lindor and Bryant’s trade values hurt at this point? Is it harder to see them dealt this year now, considering there may or may not even be a deadline. Not to mention, teams not wanting to take on extra money.....
Mark P
8:55
You're right, it seems doubtful either are dealt this season unless Cleveland/Chicago are in full and immediate fire sale mode.

We'll have to wait until the offseason to see how things shake out, since it'll be so uncertain for everyone.  If there are even a few teams willing and able to spend somewhat normally, they could have their pick of talent in both free agency and the trade market

Happy father’s day
Mark P

Indeed, hope all the dads out there are having a great day!

With COVID spikes everywhere, is the quarantine bubble plan inevitable?
Mark P
8:58
The bubble plan and/or a "hub city" plan (every team plays in a few cities, as opposed to their own home cities) seem more realistic by the day.

Which stadium design is your favorite?
Mark P
9:00
T-Mobile Park in Seattle is the best of both worlds for me.  It still feels and looks like a classic ballpark, yet also has the retractable roof to ensure that no games are ever missed.
G
9:01
There is not a COVID spike "everywhere." You should have corrected him.
Mark P
9:01
Not "everywhere," sure, but in enough places (especially in MLB-centric spots like Arizona and Florida) that it's a huge concern

Is austin martin going to sign with the blue jays ? Whats the hold up here ? Is boras trying to get an above average slot pay because austin martin slipped so far down ? Ultimately does austin martin sign with the blue jays , what happens they dont come to an agreement ?
Mark P
9:03
There are still several weeks until the signing deadline, I wouldn't get too worried yet.  Very few of the first-round picks have signed yet.
Rob

Can we have a baseball chat without covid ?
Mark P
9:03
Can't avoid the elephant in the room.

Are you a fan for NL to have this feature?  Should rosters expand to 30 on a permanent basis?
Mark P
9:05
As someone who grew up with an AL team as my favourite club, I'm used to the DH and prefer it to pitcher hitting, though I appreciate the strategy.
Just for elegance, I liked the idea of having a 27-man roster, reflecting the 27 outs in a game

Would no season help reach a cba agreement? Or will all of the disagreements carry over
