Why would the Wilpons keep SNY out of the Mets deal?  That’s the most valuable asset!
Mark P
9:19
Hey, at least they seem to have backed down from "Jeff Wilpon continues to have a job in the baseball operations department," which seemed almost impossible to believe was a real demand
Mark Trumbo
9:20
Do you think I can get a job now that DH has been employed in the NL?
Mark P
9:21
Trumbo was considering retirement last offseason but was hopeful of finding another contract and getting at least one more season.  The universal DH is good news for him on that front, but I think a lot of NL teams might prefer to go with internal options or other free agents/trade targets with less injury baggage and more recent success than Trumbo
1 year opt outs
9:22
How does this impact players like Nick Castelonos .....that can opt out after a year?
Mark P
9:22
Unless Castellanos has an absolutely unreal 2020 season, I'd be shocked if he opted out.
9:23
Even with huge numbers, in fact, I'd guess Castellanos might prefer the security of his current deal rather than test the market.
Jeff
9:23
Who do you think will be the Dodgers starting second baseman, Lux, Hernandez, or Taylor?
Mark P
9:23
Probably Lux, since LA will want to give him some reps in the field.  Taylor and Hernandez can play all over the diamond, plus get some DH at-bats too.
9:24
But as usual with the Dodgers, they'll juggle a lot of guys to give everyone a lot of playing time
Rays
9:25
Odds that we see Wander Franco debut this season?
Mark P
9:25
Slim to none.  Though the Rays have been known to give their guys early callups, I'd say Franco is on the roster only to give him taxi squad reps rather than to actually use him in a big league game
Casa de mi Padres
9:26
How can the Padres lure Mookie or Springer?
Mark P
9:27
Offering more money than anyone else, simple!

Or at least offering something close to the highest offer and then trying to sell them on the Padres' young core, all the upcoming prospects, San Diego's weather, etc.
Ken Sr
9:29
Who is the best athlete you’ve ever seen in person?
Mark P
9:29
Does it count if I didn't see them play their actual best sport?  Since I saw Wayne Gretzky compete in a charity softball game once.
Drew
9:31
What say you about George Springer fit in Minny next year? Rosario moves on. Buxton, Kepler and Springer would cover a whole lot of grass.
Mark P
9:31
It's an idea, though with Kirilloff and Larnach coming up soon, the Twins might not want to block up their outfield
Dan
9:33
Will Rob Roenicke get an honest shot in Boston or does Chaim Bloom already have someone in mind for next season?
Mark P
9:33
If the Sox have a good season, I don't see why Roenicke wouldn't get an extended look.

9:34
What are the biggest holes on Cincinnati's roster preventing them from taking the central? Seems like a lot of prognosticators have them at about .500 even before the short season.
Mark P
9:36
My questions about Cincy had to do with their defense, whether Votto could rebound, whether any of young outfielders would emerge, whether Akiyama would be able to transition well to MLB....there was definitely some reason to be uncertain.

The DH becoming available answers one of those defensive questions, at least.
Go Cubs
9:37
Craig Kimbrel gonna be dominant again or will we continue to see him pitch like he did in 2019
Mark P
9:38
The hope was that Kimbrel would bounce back in a normal season, given how his 2019 was abbreviated by his long free agent wait.  Of course, now 2020 has resulted in an even stranger situation.
9:39
I'd say the days of Kimbrel being a truly dominant reliever are probably over, though there isn't anything preventing him from still being effective
Dave
9:40
Who's more likely to be dealt before the deadline, Cueto or Samardzija?
Mark P
9:43
Shark is a free agent this winter, Cueto after 2021.  I guess it depends on how much teams would be willing to give up for so little of Samardzija's contribution over so few games
9:44
The QO might not be a factor for the Giants with Shark anyway this winter, so they might be more prone to dealing him and thus getting anything they can get for him now
The Final Boss
9:45
If I were a GM I would be reluctant to place ANY value on this season's outcome. The best that can happen is you win a WS that you'll never really get credit for. Agree or no?
Mark P
9:46
That's a reasonable way of looking at things.  In the same way that no logical team would overreact to a 60-game sample size in a normal regular season, a player or team underachieving/overachieving in 2020 shouldn't be seen as a true signpost going forward

9:47
Who are you thinking at DH for the Reds? Moustakas? Then Senzel every day at 2nd? Or Castellanos with Senzel in the OF? None of the outfielders are horrible in the grass but none are anywhere close to being GG winners either. They all seem to fit in the below average to average area defensively but they can't all DH and they still have to send three of them out there.
Mark P
9:48
The easiest answer is no single DH, as the Reds can rotate a number of players through the slot based on matchups and to keep everyone fresh
Puig
9:49
Wouldn’t it make sense for any contender to pick up Puig? Especially considering the impact that a positive COVID test would have on a team’s depth?
Mark P
9:49
I expect Puig to get a lot of looks now that the freeze is over
Dave
9:50
Will Mookie see time at 2b? He came up at that position
Mark P
9:50
I guess it can't be ruled out, but I doubt it, given how LA has all sorts of other second base options
Dean
9:51
In regards to the runner on second in extra inning.  How will the runner be determined to go to second and what are the consequences?  Does it have to be a bench player and does that person get burned roster-wise?  Is it the last player to make an out in the prior inning?  Can you just keep putting the fastest runner each inning?
Mark P
9:51
I believe it was the player who was the last out in the previous inning, at least based on how the rule was tested in the minors
David
9:53
Will miguel andujar get regular playing time this year?
Mark P
9:53
Sure, I don't see why the Yankees wouldn't regularly have him in the mix
