Mark P

Hey there everyone, time for tonight's chat!
First things first.....RIP to Lou Brock, one of the sport's legends.
Richard
8:22
Time for David Bell to go?
Mark P
8:24
The Reds have been a relative disappointment, but a playoff berth is easily still within reach.  Even if they do miss out, I'm not sure how much stock the Reds front office and ownership will put into the results of an abbreviated season, even though 2020 was a win-now year pre-pandemic
PhillyBlueJay
8:24
Will Blue Jays still make the playoffs if Teo is out for the season?
Mark P
8:25
Hernandez hasn't even been put on the IL yet, though there's certainly cause for concern with any injury this close to the end of the year.
8:26
Needless to say, however, losing Hernandez to even a 10-day IL stint is a major loss for the Jays.  They're in good shape for the playoffs now but they need Teoscar's bat
Nicholas
8:27
What you think of Luis Robert so far.
Mark P
8:27
Living up to the hype.  I'd prefer to see fewer strikeouts but that's not uncommon for a player in his rookie season.

Is Dustin Pedroia’s career over?
Mark P
8:29
All signs seem to be pointing in that direction
Chris
8:29
More likely to miss the playoffs, the Yankees or Astros?
Mark P
8:29
The Yankees, since I doubt Houston is falling out of second place in the AL West.

But overall, I expect both teams to be in the playoffs.
Andrew Friedman
8:29
Do you think David Price might come back
Mark P
8:30
I was under the impression that players couldn't opt back in after early August, but Isan Diaz's situation showed that players can return with permission from both the league and the MLBPA.

I don't see why this wouldn't apply to Price as well.
8:31
As to whether it'll happen or not, who knows.  Price would need time to ramp up, and even though he's David Price, I'm not sure if the Dodgers would be keen on using him as a postseason reliever if he's coming in relatively cold
Theo
8:33
Has David Ross been a disappointment? I think so. Afraid to drop guys in the order and leaving starting pitchers in too long.
Mark P
8:34
The Cubs are in first place, so "disappointment" isn't the word I'd use.
Shogo Akiyama
8:34
Am I officially a bust?
Mark P
8:34
After only 118 plate appearances? No
Dave
8:35
Hal Steinbrenner offers you a million dollars to come up with a creative way to get out of the Stanton contract, which has been absolutely catastrophic. Go.
Mark P
8:35
"Hey Giancarlo, retire from baseball."
"No."
"Pleeeeease?"
"No."
"Aw, come on."
"No."
"I'll be your friend!"
"No."
"Aw, you're mean!"
Playoff Confirm
8:36
Mark, can you please confirm that the team that is better seeds bats LAST in all three games of the first round.  I know that all three games are in the park of the higher seed.
Mark P
8:37
I was assuming all three games would be treated as normal home games for the higher seed, so yeah, they'd bat last.

(I assume this would also be the case if the entire postseason ends up at a neutral site.)

8:37
What you think about the Red Sox future since they have some good young players, prospects and already reset the luxury tax this year?
Mark P
8:38
I don't think it'll take too long for the Red Sox to get back on track, though a postseason appearance in 2021 may be too soon.  The question may be just how much of a rebuild they're looking at, or if ownership will give Bloom the time and space needed for a more in-depth rebuild
Michael
8:40
Tigers and orioles are so close to kicking the Yankees out of postseason play...just like you thought before the season began?
Mark P
8:40
Anything can happen in a shortened season!

How does the contract of a old sophomore like Yaz work? Will he ever see an extension?
Mark P
8:42
Yaz isn't even eligible for arbitration until the 2022-23 offseason, and not eligible for free agency until after the 2025 season.  He just turned 30 a couple of weeks ago, so an extension probably isn't terribly likely.
If he's still producing like this through 2022, the Giants will happily take the escalating arb hit on a year-to-year basis to give them flexibility if Yaz declines
Montoyo
8:43
Has my decision making been questionable to this point?
Mark P
8:44
Unless Montoyo is telling the Jays "hey guys, be sure to make 2-3 inexplicably bad baserunning decisions per game," I'd say no.
John
8:45
What’s holding the Royals back from trading Merrifield? There’s no point in keeping him at this point.
Mark P
8:45
Dayton Moore has always been hesitant for any kind of a scorched-earth rebuild, and I think he believes KC isn't that far away from being competitive again.
What the Frank Thomas
8:47
Kluber looking for a one year contract next year to rebuild his value, or is he too old for that tactic now?
Mark P
8:48
After two injury-marred years, I doubt Kluber will get anything beyond a one-year deal this winter.  MAYBE a one-year deal with an option for 2022, or a player option.

Somebody needs to give Zack Davies some love. He's quite
Mark P
8:50
Davies' advanced metrics aren't great, which is why I think a lot of folks are a little hesitant to call him a true breakout.  In terms of bottom-line numbers, of course, Davies is having a great season, which is ultimately all that matters.
Andy
8:50
Would trading Frazier, Andujar, and Florial get the yanks Degrom this winter? The Mets can’t win with Degrom
Mark P
8:51
I highly doubt the Mets would trade JDG, and if they did, the Yankees would be the absolute last team they'd move him to
