Mark P

Today's chat was delayed by some big news out of the Marlins' front office this morning, so I'm sure that will be the focus of some questions.  To the chat!
Ornery
12:22
Cashman to the Marlins??
Mark P
12:23
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the new Marlins GM/president of baseball ops was a former Yankee, but it won't be Cashman.
Ray
12:23
The Braves are playing a game 7 against probably the best team in baseball. Please help me.
Chris
12:24
Think hunter renfroe is non tendered this offseason? He hasn't had much of a role this post season
Mark P
12:25
Renfroe projected at somewhere in the range of $4MM in arbitration, so I could see him being non-tendered.  The Rays have a pretty lengthy list of arb-eligible players, and I can see them looking to cut costs somewhere
Larry
12:26
Is it likely that Tampa can beat L.A. or Atlanta?
Ray
12:26
Mark please
Mark P
12:26
Oops, I forgot your question Ray, sorry!  The Braves definitely have a shot today, given that they have Anderson on the mound and the Dodgers will be cobbling together a Johnny Wholestaff pitching mix

Could the tigers make a run at trading for and signing lindor? What would it take from a prospect perspective?
Mark P
12:27
There is no chance the Tigers will go after Lindor.  That would be a win-now move, and Detroit isn't in position to contend in 2021.
James
12:28
Do you think the Mets should pursue Bauer?
Mark P
12:28
Sure.  I'm on record as saying that the Mets aren't as far away from contending as many think, and they could be right back in the mix by 2021 with relatively few moves (plus the Wilpon-shaped cloud being lifted off the organization).
12:29
Bauer and the NY media would be, uh, interesting, but obviously he'd be a huge boost from a baseball perspective.
Andrew
12:29
Is there any chance the Yankees won’t resign DJ?
Mark P
12:30
There's definitely a chance.  There aren't many "sure thing" type free agents this winter that teams will be willing to make a big investment in, and DJLM is one of those names.  Another club could break the bank with an offer that the Yankees simply aren't comfortable matching.
Manny
12:31
Will you guys be doing your free agent predictions and if so when?
Mark P
12:31
The powers that be are working on the prediction list as we speak, and it's coming soon!

Is there a chance that John Middleton could try to pry Erik Neander away from tampa bay?
Mark P
12:33
He can try, since the key to success in baseball seems to be hiring someone from Tampa's front office.  That said, the Rays would have to grant permission for a negotiation and I don't see any reason why they'd do so.  (Though I have no knowledge of Neander's contract situation.)
Bob
12:34
Is there a legitimate chance that Charlie Morton retires? He’s still pitching great, there should be plenty of interest in him this offseason
Mark P
12:35
Morton has been discussing retirement for the last couple of years, implying that he'd only have the fire to keep playing if it's a particularly good situation (i.e. a winning team).  There's something to be said for going out a year too early rather than a year too late, and retiring after winning another ring would be a pretty boss way to go out.

Does Stroman get the QO?
Mark P
12:36
I covered Stroman as part of a broader piece about QO candidates the other day: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/10/forecasting-the-qualifying-offe...
12:37
To summarize, Stroman's situation is very unusual.  I guess I'm leaning towards no QO if I had to pick one lane, but there's so much up in the air about the Mets' front office and ownership, Stroman's own desires for a long-term deal, maybe his health, etc.

12:38
Who will want to trade with the Rays?
Mark P
12:38
Jerry Dipoto has entered the chat
Rangers29
12:39
I really like the stuff I've heard and seen from Ha-Seong Kim, who does he land with?
Mark P
12:41
Great question.  Could really be anyone with a shortstop (or second base) vacancy
Jim M
12:41
Any chance the Giants trade Buster Posey?
Mark P
12:41
I highly doubt it, in no small part because Posey has a full no-trade clause
James click
12:42
Should I resign springer and Brantley
Mark P
12:43
James Click = Astros GM

I think Houston will re-sign one of them.  As to what they "should do....I mean, re-signing both seems like a pretty wise move.  The question is whether you can rely on Brantley as an everyday outfielder if Alvarez is slated for DH-only duty, though you can always sit Alvarez every once in a while to give Brantley a break if need be

If there is no minor league season again next year, can major league teams send prospects to Asia to play similar to hockey contracts being loaned to other professional orgs?
Mark P
12:45
That's an interesting concept.  Not sure if teams would be more comfortable just keeping their prospects in-house at some kind of expanded alternate training camp, or loaning them out to other leagues where they can't be monitored as closely.  I suspect the former would be the preference of a lot of clubs.
Matt
12:46
Matt Chapman is going to be paid in the next couple years. Any chance of the A’s pull another Josh Donaldson type of trade?
Mark P
12:48
Until the A's actually sign one of their top guys to a major extension, I have to assume that every Oakland star is a trade candidate waiting to happen.  Or, a free agent departure waiting to happen, should the team hang onto said star in an effort to contend (like they did with Semien this year)

Please tell me Matthew Libertore will be REALLY good.  Please tell me that (and mean it)
Mark P
12:49
As a reminder for others in the chat, Liberatore was the chief prospect sent from the Rays to the Cardinals in what we can now call "the Randy Arozarena trade."

Liberatore is a very highly-touted prospect and the Cards have a good history of developing pitchers so hey, sky's the limit!
