In hindsight, maybe I should have started the 12/12 chat at 12:12pm, but whatever....let's get to the questions!
Jon
11:36
Seems weird for there to be such a holdup in the McCann deal if they’re just haggling over a few million in AAV, right?
Mark P
11:37
It could be that another team (or teams) jumped up with a late bid that is comparable or better than the Mets' offer, and McCann's reps are now getting if they can get some more out of the Mets.
Dave
11:38
Owens, Porter, Scott, Hill or the mystery candidate, who is the Mets next gm?
Mark P
11:38
As Mike Puma of the NY Post tweeted just moments ago, Porter and Scott seem to be the two favorites.  And JP Ricciardi is the mystery fifth candidate.
11:41
Sorry for the pause, had to update the Mets GM post with that latest news.  It's been a while since I've had to interrupt a chat for notable news, so we were probably due!

Hey Mark, the Cards and Indians look like a good match for a Jose Ramirez trade. What would the Cardinals need to send to make this happen?
Mark P
11:42
It would have to be a pretty major trade package, since Ramirez is controllable through 2023 and at a relative bargain price considering he's an MVP-caliber player at his best.  The Tribe would be well within their rights to ask for Flaherty or Carlson as the headliner of a deal.
11:43
But that said, I doubt Cleveland deals Ramirez for at least a year. Despite their cost-cutting, the team still plans to contend while they have that core of top-tier pitching.

11:44
Which team will likely sign JT Realmuto?
Mark P
11:45
You'd think the Phillies hiring Dombrowski would mean that they're back in the hunt, though questions remain about how much money the Phils are willing to spend this winter.  The Mets will likely look at JTR if they can't sign McCann, and maybe the Angels (another reported McCann suitor) will follow suit.
11:46
Can't rule out Toronto, Washington, or Houston, though the latter two teams also might not have a lot to spend
Jordan
11:46
Who seems like the most logical candidate for shortstop the reds go after?
Mark P
11:48
If they're trying to cut payroll severely, maybe someone like a Freddy Galvis.  But if the Reds are done with the big cuts, maybe someone like Simmons who wouldn't break the bank on a probable one-year deal.
Matt
11:49
I know AA keeps things very mum, but what are the Braves doing? Just pausing to if/when the DH is announced?
Mark P
11:50
It wouldn't shock me if this was indeed the case, as maybe they've floated a few offers to Ozuna's team that will become more concrete if/when the universal DH becomes a reality.
Then again, it also wouldn't shock me if the Braves suddenly announced another big move within the next five minutes, given AA's reputation for secrecy.

What kind of contract do you think Sugano gets, and where are the most likely landing spots?
Mark P
11:53
He's already going his age-31 season, but there might be enough interest that I could see a couple of teams offering three-year contracts.  The money is trickier, maybe something like a $9MM average annual value but with a lot of incentives?
Most likely landing spots, your guess is as good as mine.  Padres, Blue Jays, and Red Sox have all been mentioned as candidates thus far, there's certainly a lot more others
11:54
Basically any team that needs starting pitching should be making some calls
Tribe Time
11:55
Any chance the tribe trades Cookie and figures out a way to pay Lindor?  Cookie & Santana added up to $30M...
Mark P
11:56
That would be a very unexpected pivot, and an unlikely one.  Lindor is definitely leaving in free agency after the season anyway, whereas Carrasco has more control
Angels 1961
11:58
Who plays RF for Angels this year, could it be Ohtani?
Mark P
11:58
It'll be Jo Adell
BZ
11:58
if the Jays don’t get a top 4 player in free agency and get Brantley does that make a Lindor trade to the Jays likely?
Mark P
11:58
I don't know about "likely," but certainly yes, the Jays will pivot to trying to land a big trade target if they can't sign any of the Big Four
Dustin
11:59
Prediction on where Sonny Gray lands and for what kind of package..
Mark P
11:59
Now that Iglesias has been dealt, I wonder if the Reds will still be looking to move Gray or if moving Iglesias' salary alone relaxes their financial constraints

What do you think of Sandy's strategy in front office hiring? Is it sending a weird message to free agents that he is in charge until they hire someone underneath him? Are they waiting to make big moves until they hire "the guy"? Will the new hire have the ultimate say in what they end up doing?
Mark P
12:01
I think free agents and their reps know that Alderson is "the guy" regardless of who the general manager ends up being.  (I mean, ultimately Cohen is "the guy" since he's the one signing the checks, but you know what I mean.)
Tim
12:02
please tell me the Sox aren’t going to cheap out on Hendriks
Mark P
12:02
It could be that trading for Lynn and signing Eaton were ways to fill roster holes while saving enough budget space for a bigger signing like Hendriks
Anthony
12:03
Mets possibly hiring a GM that worked in Boston or Chicago.
Is that a sign they also might hire a President of Baseball operations that previously worked for those teams?
Mark P
12:03
If the "Theo to the Mets in 2021" rumors weren't already loud enough....
12:04
Er, 2022
Troy C
12:05
Would the Angels trade J Adell for Josh Hader?
Mark P
12:06
Nope.  A star everyday player is way more valuable than a star reliever, even one as good as Hader.
1964 ROY
12:06
Dick Allen’s OPS+ of 156 is 19th all time, tied with the Say Hey Kid, Willie Mays. How is he not in the HOF?
Mark P
12:07
Allen didn't make many friends among sportswriters back when he played, which is why his HOF candidacy didn't develop.  But you're right, Allen is long overdue for a spot in Cooperstown.
