"You there, boy!  What chat is this?"
"Why, it's the Christmas chat, sir!"

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday, and what better way to celebrate than by digging into some baseball questions!
Mets
11:20
All I want for Christmas is Springer, Sugano and Hand. Doesn’t seem like that big of an ask? After that, would Mets have the right pieces for Lindor?
Mark P
11:21
It's possible, though the feeling is that the Mets are more likely to spend rather than trade away minor leaguers
JN
11:21
Where could you see Eddie Rosario ending up?
Mark P
11:22
I could see him as being something of a consolation prize for whomever doesn't get Ozuna.  That said, because Rosario's price tag is so much lower than Ozuna's, a lot of other non-obvious contenders will be in the running for him.
11:23
If Rosario is also only available on a one-year deal, teams won't mind putting him in left field for a season, so there isn't the NL/DH question looming over him as it is Ozuna over a longer-term contract
Philly Phan
11:23
How big of a blow would it be for the Phils to lose Sixto to the Marlins and potentially losing JT to the Nationals?
Mark P
11:25
It could definitely be a blow.  Now, caveat....Sixto is very new to MLB, so it might not be so bad for the Phillies if he doesn't pitch well going forward, gets hurt, etc.  But just in principle, it's not good to make such a big all-in move and get essentially no return on it, barring a draft pick if Realmuto signs elsewhere
Dilemma
11:25
Christmas ham or Christmas turkey?
Mark P
11:25
I'm a turkey guy all the way
Brian Cashman
11:26
We really need a #2..... Can I get Luis Castillo for Schmidt and Frazier and Gil ???
Mark P
11:27
That kind of offer would at least get Cincinnati's attention, but like I said last week, I highly doubt Castillo is being moved.  The Reds' apparent priority right now is to move salary, and since Castillo is still inexpensive, I think he would only be traded if another team was willing to absorb a bigger contract (Moustakas, Castellanos) in its entirety.
11:28
If the Reds moved into a full rebuild, all bets are off, but the indication is that they're trying to unload salary and still try to compete in 2021.
Texas Santa
11:28
Would Texas be wise to resign Danny Santana to a minor league deal as insurance for Dahl and his injury propensity?
Mark P
11:29
Wouldn't be a bad idea at all.  You'd think Santana would garner interest from multiple teams given how good he was in 2019.
Andrew R.
11:30
Is Realmuto Philly’s to lose at this point?
Mark P
11:31
The Dombrowski hiring changes the equation considerably, but I'm still leaning towards Realmuto playing elsewhere in 2021.  Still has yet to be established that the Phils have money to spend
Chris
11:31
Is every interested team offering bauer both a one year deal and a long term deal? Seems like that could take a lot longer than just negotiating for one type of contract
Mark P
11:33
This makes sense.  I would imagine teams interested in, say, Realmuto or Springer aren't even bothering floating offers like a two-year deal worth $40MM per season or something.  But for Bauer, such offers are theoretically possible, so there's a lot more for Bauer's camp to gauge
Sox Fan
11:34
Thoughts on the Semien to sox to play 2B rumors?
Mark P
11:35
It probably comes down to either Semien's willingness to move positions, or what his other offers look like.  If Boston is the only team willing to give him an acceptable amount of money, Semien is probably open to playing 2B rather than shortstop.  If he's getting financially-comparable offers from teams that want him as a shortstop, who knows
11:36
Also, I guess we can't rule out a larger defensive shakeup.  Red Sox fans, how'd you feel about Semien at shortstop, Bogaerts at third base, and Devers moved over to first base?
Nathan
11:37
Merry Christmas, and how good a return do you think Pittsburgh got for Bell. I’m a pirates fan and I think it was a bad time to trade him.
Mark P
11:39
I think it was a pretty decent return, but I may be a bit more down on Bell than others.  Aside from those few months in 2019, he's never looked like a particularly special hitter, and his value is limited as a first base-only player.  True, the Pirates were in a touch of a sell-low situation, but his price tag drops even further if he struggled again in 2021
Shane
11:39
Do the Rays trade for a catcher to split time with zunino
Mark P
11:40
They're on the verge of re-signing Kevan Smith, but it makes sense if Tampa brings in someone else more established to compete for playing time
Denny C
11:40
Are the Tigers in a holding until 2022 waiting to see which top prospects develop before they really dive back into free agency?
Mark P
11:41
I suspect this is the case.  Between the pandemic and the fact that none of their young pitchers are proven at the MLB level, 2022 seems like Detroit's time to strike (and even then, maybe only "strike" in a somewhat limited fashion)
Beets By Schrute
11:42
How much money do the Yankees actually have to work with? Are they truly that strapped to stay under the luxury tax threshold if they give DJ LeMahieu his $20+M per season he's seeking?
Mark P
11:44
The Yankees' tax bill hikes considerably if they surpass the threshold for a third straight year, so it makes sense that they would want to duck under the line and reset their bill.  Now, obvious caveat ---- even after a year of major revenue losses, the Yankees organization obviously still has a ton of money.  They could certainly pay DJLM, add more players, and cross the tax threshold again, but they're apparently choosing not to
MLBPA
11:45
Does a new CBA get ride of the competitive balance tax?
Mark P
11:45
I'm sure the union would love to see the CBT hit the bricks, but it isn't happening.
11:46
Now that the league has managed to get some level of salary ceiling (if not a true cap) installed, they'll fight tooth and nail to keep it in place
Freddie
11:46
Who is on your Hall of Fame ballot?
Mark P
11:47
I don't have a vote, but if I did.....Bonds, Clemens, Rolen, Helton, and I'm on the fence over Sheffield and Wagner
J Polanco
11:47
Any chance the Twins will trade for Lindor?
Mark P
11:47
Maybe a tiny chance but I highly doubt Cleveland moves him within the division
A-Dub Wilson
11:48
Who do you think will sign before New Year’s Day in terms of major league players.
Mark P
11:49
I wouldn't be shocked if we get a decent amount of action between tomorrow and January 1.  Players are people too, remember ---- they might be taking the holiday to relax with their families, and then once Christmas is past, they'll get in touch with their agents and decide on some offers on the table
MLB
11:50
When are we going to decide about the amount of games to be played in  2021 and about DH in NL (I was exceptical and I am a fan now)
