First chat of 2021, here we go!

Did the Phillies spend all their money on Dombrowski?
Mark P
7:08
I cannot imagine Dombrowski would take the job without assurances that some money would be spent.  He's not signing on to spend 2-3 years rebuilding.
Nats
7:09
What’s your view on Carter Kieboom? Is he good enough to start next season or does Justin Turner or someone else make more sense?
Mark P
7:10
Kieboom isn't far removed from being a top prospect, so I'm not going to make any big judgements on a player after only 165 MLB plate appearances.  Whether he's good enough to be a regular contributor on a winning team as early as next season remains to be seen, however, and I can potentially see the Nats looking to trade him if they want a more win-now infield answer

Even of the blue jays get springer, they have to get a starter or two right? No way they can compete with their current rotation
Mark P
7:11
I tend to agree.  The Jays have a lot of volume but not a lot of certainty outside of Ryu.

Tatis , acuna or soto for the next 10 years?
Mark P
7:11
Now here's a poll question!
7:12
Contracts aside, who'd you rather have on your team for the next 10 years?

Fernando Tatis Jr. (37.6% | 923 votes)

Juan Soto (34.1% | 837 votes)

Ronald Acuna (28.3% | 693 votes)

Total Votes: 2,453
(I added the "contracts aside" proviso since Acuna's extension adds so much value.)

Is Mickey Moniak a bust?
Mark P
7:14
Moniak was seen as a bit of a project being drafted right out of high school, so it isn't really surprising he needed more developmental time.  The Phillies were obviously hoping to have gotten more than they have from Moniak at this point, yet he's another player who is still young (22) and we shouldn't close the book on him just yet
7:15
It also strikes me that Moniak might be a prime change of scenery candidate in a trade.

What is the likelihood the rays will trade Kiermaier this offseason? And is there any way the Cubs are reading Rizzo. I have seen reports that said they are open to listening to offers on almost anyone.
Mark P
7:16
Kiermaier is kind of a tough sell, as MLBTR's Steve Adams recently wrote: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/12/rays-trade-rumors-kevin-kiermai...
7:17
This isn't the Rays' style, but I wonder if attaching a good prospect to Kiermaier would help grease the wheels for a trade.

As for Rizzo, you're right that the Cubs are likely willing to discuss any veteran making decent money, but there hasn't been much speculation about Rizzo in particular

What is hold up on SS market? Semien not being a SS in some teams eyes? I feel like there are too many SS and not enough holes also
Mark P
7:19
Kim going to the Padres removes one notable shortstop candidate from the mix, and to a team that didn't even need a shortstop in the first place.  So that could spark some movement.
Small Market
7:20
Why is it that every time you hold these chats, you only focus on large market teams and push aside all of the small market team fans? Your bias is frustrating.
Mark P
7:20
No bias here.  I try to get to at least one question per team per chat, though it's just that there are more questions about the bigger-market teams
Scotty
7:21
I would like to hear your take on the Darvish trade
Mark P
7:22
Seems like a pretty clear win for the Padres, managing to get a top-of-the-rotation type for lesser (by the standards of the deep SD farm system) prospects
Al Avila
7:22
Where does DET go from here this off-season? Any big trades to complete the tear-down?
Mark P
7:22
They've pretty much moved every big salary of note except for Miggy, who I highly doubt would be dealt without the Tigers eating a lot of money.
7:23
So the tearing down is complete, and now they should be looking at building back up.  I don't see the Tigers making any real big additions until they know more about what they exactly have in all their young pitchers

7:24
Will Bauer really get anywhere near $200M?
Mark P
7:25
I tend to think no.
Now, getting "only" $160MM or something is still nothing to sneeze at, but I don't see him hitting the $200MM threshold
HOF
7:25
Who’s on your hall of fame ballot for 2021?
Mark P
7:26
Bonds, Clemens, Rolen, Andruw Jones, Wagner, Helton, Sheffield

This is actually a different answer than I gave last week to this same question, but I took another look at Jones and Sheffield and their numbers swayed me.

Padres add Yates, Profar, and Hamels to end the offseason...WS favorites?
Mark P
7:28
I'm not sure Profar finds a place in the lineup without a DH spot available.  And Yates and Hamels can't exactly be seen as finishing touches based on how their 2020 seasons went
Sophie
7:29
Does the Phillies not being in on Colome show us that they aren’t planning on spending any real money on the bullpen?
Mark P
7:29
The Phils might well be in on Colome, and frankly, I'd be surprised if they weren't.
Duff
7:30
Does the Red Sox current time frame match up with Bogaerts prime?  Should they consider moving him now ?
Mark P
7:31
I see zero reason for the Sox to move Bogaerts.  His deal runs through at least 2025, and Boston plans to be back in contention long before then
Incaviglia Fan
7:32
What are The Rangers plans with Joey Gallo right now? Is he staying?
Mark P
7:33
To cite another fellow MLBTR scribe, Anthony Franco took a look the Gallo situation: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/12/the-rangers-joey-gallo-decision...
7:34
I tend to agree with the thinking that the Rangers might want to wait until the season begins to really explore trade possibilities, so Gallo gets a chance to rebound at the plate.  Not that the small 2020 sample size is indicative of a downturn, but rival teams will definitely argue it is, in an attempt to get Texas to accept a lesser offer
