The Rockies don't operate under the same logic as most teams, but by this point, I don't see how they couldn't tear things down.  I can't speak for Story, but one would imagine he isn't too impressed by this Arenado trade and may be wary of signing an extension with this organization.

What's the likelihood of the rays actually trading adames to the reds?
Mark P
8:35
You can't rule out the possibility of any Rays player (save Franco) being dealt, so there's certainly a chance something comes of these talks.

Shopping list items left for the Blue Jays?
Mark P
8:36
Starting pitching.  I'd guess a left-handed bat as well, since their lineup is pretty tilted to righty bats.

How do the Cardinals keep "stealing" players (Holiday, Goldschmidt, Arenado). Are they doing things differently than other clubs and I'm surprised they are approved by league etc
Mark P
8:38
I'm not sure "stealing" is exactly the right word.  When you're able to consistently develop good prospects from your farm system (as the Cards have for close to two decades now), you will always be in position to acquire big-name players in a trade.

Plus, I'm sure many Cards fans can list a dozen examples of trades over the last decade that went awry for the team.

Kansas City wants a left hand hitting outfielder n Boston is shopping Benintendi. Boston wants young pitching and KC has plenty. Do you see a potential trade?
Mark P
8:39
It seems like a fit on paper, sure.  Benintendi is only controlled through 2022 and it doesn't technically seem like the Royals will contend within that two-year window, but the Royals always seem to feel they're closer to contention than their roster might indicate.

With the WhiteSox signing Rodon, is Bauer pretty much have no shot at signing in Chicago?
Mark P
8:41
I didn't think Bauer and the White Sox were a fit anyway.  Bauer and Reinsdorf or Bauer and La Russa seemed like a personality clash just waiting to happen.

is Starling Marte an upgrade over Hasley/Quinn? Mia should move him fairly cheap
Mark P
8:42
Hasley Quinn is one of my favourite Batman villains.

Anyway, I doubt Miami is trading Marte, especially not to a division rival.  They're looking to contend this year.  Now, if things go south for the Marlins by the trade deadline, Marte is definitely a trade chip, but the Marlins are obviously hoping it doesn't come to that.

Can you explain briefly, what the deferred money means in a few of the recent contracts? Like the Semien offer from the A's?
Mark P
8:45
Deferred money means that the players' pay is held off until a later year.  For instance, since the Nationals have deferrals built into seemingly all of their signings, Max Scherzer had $105MM of his contract deferred until 2022-28.  So even though his deal is up after this season, he'll still get money from the Nats until 2028
8:46
Essentially the idea is for a team to kick the can down the road on what they pay a player, say for example if there's a worldwide pandemic that limits your short-term revenues.

why would the cubs sign Joc Pederson when they have been shedding a lot of payroll by trading darvish and caratini and non tendering schwarber and declining lester’s option
Mark P
8:48
Ownership apparently recently approved more spending, hence the recent additions: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/cubs-rumors-ricketts-increase-p...
If I'm Jed Hoyer, I'm probably thinking "it would've been great to know this BEFORE I dealt Yu Darvish," but still
Correa

You don’t think Bogarts contract is a good comp?
Mark P
8:49
Maybe, but Bogaerts' contract struck me as a bit of a bargain for the Red Sox even at the time, and it looks even better in the wake of Bogaerts' 2020 season.  I think Correa will want to top that.

who says no? Jose Ramirez & Triston McKenzie for Groshans, Manoah, Moreno, Tellez
Mark P

Cleveland.  They'd want more than that for just Ramirez, forget about McKenzie

How about the Twins sign Wong and have Simmons and Buxton for best defense up the middle? Could then put Polanco at 3B and Donaldson at DH.  They have anymore cash left?
Mark P
8:52
That would be great defensively, but it's a big hit to the Bomba Squad if both Cruz and Rosario aren't there.  It puts a lot of pressure on Kirilloff to be very good right away.
Sugano
8:54
Are you surprised I didn’t get a good enough offer to come over to the majors?
Mark P
8:56
Sugano specifically mentioned that timing was an issue in his decision to return to NPB, since if he'd had more time to negotiate beyond his 30-day window, he might have found a deal.

He probably has a point, considering the offseason was very quiet until about two weeks ago when suddenly everyone started making moves.  With another month of information gathering (and maybe more of an idea about the pandemic) to work with, maybe a team steps up to top the offer Sugano got from NPB
"top the offer Sugano got from" Yomiuri, is what I meant to write

Maybe he meant Clint “Hawkeye” Barton. Never trade Avengers. Bad move.
Mark P
8:58
Not that Hawkeye doesn't have skills, but if you had to trade one Avenger who seemed a bit expendable....
Question
8:59
What does the president of baseball operations do? Are they essentially a GM?
Mark P
9:00
The head baseball executive within a front office can have varying titles, depending on the organization --- sometimes it's a president of baseball ops (a POBO), sometimes it's a GM, sometimes it's a chief baseball officer, etc.

Generally, if your team has someone with the POBO title, they are the top dog when it comes to making the decisions

Oops I didn't mean to hit send yet, but in terms of Randall Grichuk, how much of that contract do we eat to rid of him, and would that increase possibility for locking up Bauer?
Mark P
9:02
As someone who spends too much time thinking about potential Jays trades, I keep thinking of Grichuk's deal as salary offset for a more expensive player, rather than a deal that the Jays would have to much/any of

Frazier would be a nice fit in Seattle, that makes sense
