Seems probable.

do Deferrals count against the luxury tax?
Mark P
9:35
Yes
That guy
9:36
You surprised no one made the HOF this year?
Mark P
9:36
Nope.
Champs
9:37
Rocks wouldn’t trade Story to us, right?  Story and Seager on the left side of that IF and raking in the middle of the order.  Back-to-Back!
Mark P
9:37
I have a hard time seeing the Rockies trade Story to a division rival
Adell vs. Adele
9:38
What happens first? Jo Adell hitting 20+ HRs in MLB or Adele releasing a hit song that reaches #1 in the charts?
Mark P
9:39
As per the internet, Adele has an album in the works but it has been delayed. We can assume that the first single will go straight to #1, so Adell has one season at most to hit 20 homers.

My money is on Adele since she's the surer bet

Should Giancarlo Stanton be dealt? He is very expensive and the Yankees need a payroll cut. He is injured every season. He did very well in the National League. Dodgers, Giants, Braves, or Nationals?
Mark P
9:42
Hypothetical Stanton trades aren't quite as prevalent as hypothetical Jo Adell trades in these chats, but they're close.

I'll say it again --- nobody wants anything to do with Stanton's contract.  Too much money and too much risk for such an oft-injured player.

The Arenado deal did not really come out of nowhere Cardinals have been trying to aquire him since last year.
Mark P
9:42
Fair, not totally "nowhere."  But there hadn't been any recent reports or rumors.
You sound like a politician
9:43
By not answering the question about Mahomes vs "The old guy"
Mark P
9:43
Oops, I guess I forgot to actually make a prediction.  I think the Chiefs win a close game.

Will Cleveland end up with the lowest payroll?
Mark P
9:45
"Ha!  No way!" --- the Pirates
Favorite Player
9:45
Hey Mark, who was your favorite player growing up?
Mark P
9:47
I didn't really have a favourite player, strangely enough.  I rooted for everyone on the Blue Jays, but other than that, I was prone to admire non-Jays like Ken Griffey Jr. or Fred McGriff (after the trade to San Diego)
Donley Canary

Are the Atlanta Braves going to answer moves within the Division or sit on sidelines? Really disappointed in the lack of off season moves by the team. Much weaker overall roster right now than at the end of last season. Bullpen, bench and LF are glaring weaknesses IMO. Staying course or will we see some activity in the next week?
Mark P
9:48
I still think there's a chance Ozuna returns, since there isn't much movement anywhere on his market.
Prince or Eddie Murphy
9:49
Party all the time or Partyman?
Mark P
9:49
Partyman, hands down.  That scene of the Joker and his goons entering the art gallery is legendary.
worried Cardinals fan

This sort of feels like the Goldschmidt trade, which has not worked out so well for the Cards -- pay premium dollars for a player on the wrong side of 30. I really hope we didn't give up much of anything -- Gomber by himself might be an overpay -- am I wrong???
Mark P
9:51
Here's the one Cardinals fan not overjoyed by the Arenado trade!

To be fair, it isn't great that this trade is being made after a down year for Arenado.  But really, the Goldschmidt trade has hardly been a failure (he was great in 2020, good in 2019), and since the Cards have apparently given up next to nothing for Arenado, why not?
Ron Swanson Dinner
9:51
I love Scott Rolen - amazing defender - but is he really HOF worthy? Not the greatest with the bat, good but not great
Mark P
9:52
Rolen is a pretty easy pick for me on my hypothetical ballot

Is Marquez one of the most valuable trade chips in baseball? Super team friendly deal and lights out stuff
Mark P
9:52
For sure.  Marquez is quite possibly the most underrated player in baseball.
Zac
9:53
I still find the Ottavino deal remarkable, but could we have another rival trade? Amed Rosario to the Reds? The Indians just got him! For 2 top 30 prospects?
Mark P
9:53
Cleveland and Cincinnati did join up as part of that three-team Bauer trade two years ago, so the Buckeye State rivalry isn't nearly as heated as Yankees/Red Sox.
Tim
9:54
I'm pulling for trey Mancini. What's his status?
Mark P
9:54
By all accounts he's healthy and ready to roll for the 2021 season.  It'll be great to see him back on the field.
Matt
9:56
What retired player deserves a movie about their life and career?
Mark P
9:56
Lots of players would be great candidates for a biopic.  My pick is Satchel Paige
Sweet Lou
9:58
If MLB salary economics stay as is, is Bucs best hope to be the Ray's (ie constant roster movement,  never keeping a player long-term, etc)? If so, not very pleasant for the average fan
Mark P
9:59
I think Pittsburgh fans would happily take some roster churn every year in exchange for a team that wins 90 games and contends for the pennant
Fire Avila
9:59
What in the world is Avila thinking. Isn't Eddie Rosario for 8 & 1 a decent deal? Why would you not want to try to sign him for that?
Mark P
10:00
Takes two to tango.  Rosario might have preferred playing for Cleveland since they're closer to contending in 2021 than the Tigers are

Do deferrals count against the luxury tax in the year they are paid or in the year they are accrued?
