Tigers fan here. Did the A’s simply not offer enough for Fiers?
AvatarJason Martinez

Apparently. Tigers have almost no leverage because Fiers is a rental, but they have to draw the line somewhere. Can't just give him away for nothing. And since he'll clear waivers, they have all of August to trade him.

How many teams in Baseball history have used the same rotation throughout the season?
AvatarJason Martinez

I would love to do some research on this subject. At least one of the Giants recent World Series teams was close (Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Sanchez, Bumgarner) and the Reds with Arroyo, Cueto, Bailey, Leake, Latos made 161 of 162.
Those are the 2 teams that come to mind since I've been paying close attention to roster depth/injuries.

Surprised Dodgers only get Axford, are there any reliable setup RHP available in Aug?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:34
Yes, I'm surprised. I like Axford, but I think they forgot how valuable Brandon Morrow was during the playoffs last year. They do not have a "Brandon Morrow" right now and I don't think there's one available via waiver trade. Maybe Walker Buehler can have that type of impact, but I haven't heard that they plan on doing that.

What am I doing in the minors with Tampa Bay?
AvatarJason Martinez

Continuing to get regular at-bats. Not happening in TB with Pham, Kiermaier, Mallex Smith/Carlos Gomez right now. Should get a shot in September and should be penciled in for a starting job in '19.

Just announced Cueto to undergo TJ. Out till at least next September... Cheer me up?

One of the most depressing aspects of the game. A majority of pitchers, at some point, will miss 1-2 seasons due to an elbow injury. Good news is that he should be fully healthy for the last 2 years of his contract. I'd take that over him continuing to try to pitch with a damaged elbow ligament.

Does your job become a lot less hectic after the deadline?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:40
1st week of August (post-trades) and 1st week of September (post-40-man call-ups) are hectic and then I get to relax a bit until start of offseason. Putting together offseason depth charts is relaxing. No roster moves to keep up with during the playoffs.
99 Problems but Osuna ain't one

Do you think that Ken Giles can pull it together enough through the rest of the year to bring something good in the offseason for the Jays?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:43
Relievers are unpredictable. So anything can happen. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned it around and finished strong. Only thing that is almost certain with relievers is that  they will not be very good/injury-free for more than a few years. That's why Mariano and Hoffman are in the Hall of Fame. Dominant for 14-15+ years.

That Cueto contract looks ugly now.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:43
Don't give long-term contracts to guys who throw a baseball for a living. Very risky.

Jason Martinez gets a 3 year contract to be the Mets new GM starting in 2019, but your work begins in earnest this winter. What moves do you make so the Mets are a playoff team in 2019, and if not by when?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:47
As bad as things seem right now, that roster is already playoff-caliber on paper with deGrom, Noah, Wheeler, Matz in the rotation. I'd focus on building the bullpen and adding depth just in case they have another injury-riddled season. Not a lot of trade possibilities with all the veterans coming off of injuries.

I do think they're planning on using  Buehler out of the bullpen down the stretch and come playoff-time and they're getting back Urias at some point as well, who will serve a similar role.  Also, they'll likely move Maada or Ryu in the bullpen.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:49
Forgot about Urias. Yes, he could be a difference-maker coming out of the 'pen. He's returning from major shoulder surgery, though. Surprised he'd be back at all in '19. I wouldn't count on him getting a heavy load in the playoffs.
Braves

95 Braves Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Avery

Close. They made 141 starts in a 144-game season. Jason Schmidt made 2 starts and Matt Murray made 1. I'm sure it's happened a lot, especially pre-90's. And probably with 4-men rotations.

Looks like 2003 Mariners were the last team to use only 5 SPs all year - Moyer, Meche, Piniero, Freddy garcia, Ryan franklin

There you go. Always fun to reminisce about past baseball seasons. I need to have a live chat where we only discuss past MLB seasons.
Gotta run. Thanks for chatting!
