MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: April 12, 2017

Jason Martinez

Yes he is, but I don't think the Dodgers are interested in trading him. McCarthy, Ryu, Hill, Kazmir are all injury risks. He's also valuable out of the 'pen if they ever do have 5 healthy starters.

Chances all three Rule V players on the Padres make it through the season on MLB roster?
Jason Martinez
5:19
Very good chance they all stick. Diaz is a lock with how good he's looked. Cordoba and Torrens haven't looked overwhelmed at the plate. Wouldn't surprise me if all had a DL stint at some point to get some rest and a MiLB rehab stint.

Name some potential April-May NL minor leaguer call-ups that could have big impacts.
Jason Martinez
5:22
I think either Josh Hader or Brandon Woodruff will be in the Brewers' rotation by May.

5:24
will buxton correct his mistakes at the plate or is he gonna be hicks all over again? And when do you think Park gets a call up?
Jason Martinez
5:26
I think Buxton will be fine. Didn't agree with hitting him at the top of the lineup to start the season. Kid has enough pressure on him and he seems like he'll be streaky anyways. If they just hit him 8th or 9th and play him everyday, he'll figure it out again.
5:27
I thought Park could make it back quick, but he's on the MiLB DL. I think it's a hamstring strain. Maybe a May or June call-up. He'll get one more shot.
Drew
5:28
Would a Profar for Brad Hand trade work? Profar could get everyday reps at SS and possibly build up some trade value for the Pads to flip him again later?
Jason Martinez
5:29
I think Hand's rising value and Profar's declining value, combined with the Rangers' bullpen woes, makes this possible, but I don't see a 1-for-1 deal. Padres would need to add more to the pot.
Villar
5:31
What is happening with me?!? Low average and striking out like 50% of the time! Is it the pressure to perform because I rejected an extension?
Jason Martinez
5:33
After last season, Villar gets the benefit of the doubt after 36 plate appearances. If it wasn't the start of the season, 5-for-36 wouldn't be that big of a deal. Start worrying after 60-70 plate appearances.
Cody Bellinger
5:33
I'll be up by May!
Jason Martinez
5:35
Puig and Toles are off to very good starts. Unless one of them, or Adrian Gonzalez, gets hurt, you'll still be in AAA. Making some noise, though!
Nick
5:37
Are the Dbacks a darkhorse late playoff team?
Jason Martinez
5:37
Yes, especially if guys like Shelby Miller and Taijuan Walker pitch well. I don't think their bullpen is good enough, but I think their offense/rotation can pick up the slack for now and they can trade for a late-inning reliever (closer or setup man) in June or July.
porky
5:38
Desclafani's injury gonna be the only thing that keeps the Reds from dealing him this summer ?
Jason Martinez
5:38
Even if he returns, the elbow injury will have diminished his value. I doubt he gets traded this season.
Adrian Gonzales
5:39
When will i lose my job to Cody Bellinger?
Jason Martinez
5:39
Not this season.
Darren
5:39
Who's your all-time favorite player?
Jason Martinez
5:40
Tony Gwynn. Next tier of favorite players includes Roberto Clemente, Jackie Robinson, Bob Gibson, Fernando Valenzuela, Trevor Hoffman.
Doug Fister's mom
5:40
Surprised Doug is not signed yet. Everybody needs innings eaters
Jason Martinez
5:41
You would think that's the case. Same with Colby Lewis. Can't imagine they'd be holding out for MLB deals at this point. Just need to get some innings in the minors and they'll be needed eventually.
Jimmy the Freak
5:43
Krod velocity down. Should Tigers be worried?
Jason Martinez
5:43
It's been falling for years and he's managed to adjust. But Tigers should probably be worried. Overall, their bullpen is not very impressive.

5:44
Any chances the Elvis Andrus opts out of his contract after the season is over?
Jason Martinez
5:45
If he has a comparable season to 2016, maybe, but still a long shot. I don't see him getting more than what he's owed (5 yrs, $70-75MM) even if he has an .800 OPS again.
Alex
5:47
Do the Orioles make the playoffs-maybe even a wild card?
Jason Martinez
5:47
If Tillman comes back strong and Gausman/Bundy continue to progress, I think they have at least as good of a chance as last season.

5:48
If UBaldo blows the 9-run lead his team gave him and the Red Sox win, is it possible he'll be designated for assignment? Dude is so, so bad.
Jason Martinez
5:49
There's just not much help on the way. I think Asher or Aquino will get a look soon. If either or both look like they can be successful big league starters this season, maybe they'd be willing to part with Ubaldo. No reason to give up on him, though, as long as he's good every once in awhile.
Tom Emanski
5:50
Who says no: Cubs - Quintana, Sox - Happ and Jimenez
Jason Martinez
5:51
Cubs would say no. No reason to give away their top 2 prospects (also 2 of the best prospects in baseball) when they're probably already good enough to win the World Series again. Ask again if things aren't looking good in 2 months.
Max
5:53
Will you take 5 innings 2 runs out of your 4 starter?
Jason Martinez
5:53
I'll need 6 innings from my No. 4 starter once in awhile, but I'd take 5 IP, 2 ER on most occasions. I'm assuming my bullpen is deep, though.
Brian Wilson's Beard
5:53
I'm Brian Wilson. Brian Wilson is awesome. Brian Wilson wants to pitch again. Who signs Brian Wilson?
Jason Martinez
5:53
How's that knuckleball coming along?
Jim
5:54
Assuming Moncada and Benintendi are no longer considered "prospects" at this time next year, who is the #1 prospect??
Jason Martinez
5:56
I'll take Gleyber Torres, Victor Robles or Eloy Jimenez. Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Mickey Moniak could also be in the mix if they put up big numbers in A-ball.
