Yes. But he has time to rebuild it before the trade deadline.

At what point does Kenley Jansen lose the closer job?
AvatarJason Martinez

I saw him yesterday. He looked very hittable. Hosmer hit a bomb. Villanueva missed a HR by a foot. And Headley, who was 1-for-26 and looked awful, hit the ball hard on his game-tying single. Dodgers are probably concerned, but I don't think he's in danger of losing his job anytime soon. I can see him getting a "break" for a few days if he continues to struggle.

When do we see Austin Hays? I need some excitement
AvatarJason Martinez

He's hitting .216 in AA. Gonna be a while.

When does Mike Soroka arrive?

I'm thinking early June. Even with Anibal Sanchez going on the DL, I think it's still too early. Gohara is close to returning. Wisler and Fried have done well in the 1st couple starts.

Are the Reds as bad as they seem?  I held out some hope, but right now, they’re not hitting enough or pitching well either.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:20
Probably. They're capable of having a good season, but needed a lot to go right. And a lot has gone wrong.  Injuries to key players. Hamilton/Peraza still can't hit.

Chances the Dodgers bring up Buehler with Hill on the DL?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:22
It's possible, but he's pitched 4, 5, 4 innings in his 1st 3 starts. Without looking at his pitch counts, he's either not very efficient or they're just being cautious with him. In either case, I'd think he's more of a mid-season call-up as a SP or sooner as a RP.

Your best guess on Acuna’s arrival?

2-3 weeks.

Who are your most surprising team and player so far?
AvatarJason Martinez

Most surprising team is the Pirates. Most surprising player to me is Christian Villanueva.

Is Jose Martinez for real
AvatarJason Martinez
5:28
I thought he was for real last year so I'm only slightly surprised by what he's done so far. Glad Matheny came to his senses and gave him regular playing time.

Do you see the Astros sticking with Marisnick and Fisher past the All-Star break?  If not, beyond Tucker (aka TED), who could be called upon?  Perhaps a trade? Do they need another bat?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:30
If Tucker is hitting in AAA (slow start so far) and Fisher/Marisnick/Marwin aren't doing much in the Majors, I think Tucker is a legitimate option to be their regular LF in the 2nd half.
Soroka?
5:31
He’s obviously a stud.  Who else is in that 2020 rotation though
AvatarJason Martinez
5:32
Allard, Folty, Kyle Wright. Lots of good options. Their Hi-A rotation also has 3 really good prospects ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-atlanta-braves/

What kind of package could the Giants get for Cueto if they continue to suck and he is still pitching really well near the deadline? Lot of money left on his deal.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:35
They'd probably have to eat some $. He's owed close to $70MM thru 2020. If he's pitching like an ace, though, I can see a contending team taking on a good chunk of the contract ($50-60MM) and giving up a Top 50 prospect.

When are we out of the small sample size range?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:37
I usually will give an established veteran a month before deciding that it's more than just a slump. Same for a young player who is off to a great start. It if lasts into May, it's probably legit.

Gotta run. Thanks for stopping by! Same time and place next week. Feel free to send me questions at twitter.com/mlbdepthcharts.
