MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: April 4, 2018
powered byJotCast
Jason Martinez
4:32
Welcome to my 1st chat of the 2018 regular season! We are up to 137 players on the DL, but at least 3 players are back tomorrow (Conforto, Martin Perez, Adam Wainwright) and Michael Brantley returns on Friday.
Oracio Franquez

What do you make of the young arms the Angels just recently got these last few days?
Jason Martinez
4:35
I like the pickups. Never a bad idea to take a flyer on a young pitcher with a live arm. Both have options remaining. Almonte had good numbers in AAA/AA last season, but didn't pitch much because of injuries.
Joel
4:35
Does conforto start right away
Jason Martinez
4:36
No idea, but I don't think they'd activate him so quickly if he wasn't going to be in the lineup.
Steve
4:36
What do you make of the Thompson, Asche moves by the yanks?
Jason Martinez
4:38
Asche is just Triple-A depth. I'm seeking some clarification on Thompson. I thought he was out of options, but heard he was heading to Triple-A. He's a good fit on the MLB roster for at least a few days until Hicks returns. He's an even better fit in AAA if he has an option remaining.
I was surprised he fell that far on waivers and I'd be even more surprised if he fell that far if he actually does have an option remaining.

4:39
People get hurt and people need rest, but do the Mets have a logjam in the OF?
Jason Martinez
4:40
I don't think they're desperate to trade anyone—depth is good—but I think they'd be willing to trade Nimmo or Lagares once they feel good about the health of Conforto and Cespedes. No urgency.
Jason
4:41
Is Christian Villanueva the Padres starting third baseman now?
Jason Martinez
4:43
Yes. Don't know how long his leash is, but I'm guessing he's earned more than just a few games in a row to see what he can do. They had given starts to Headley and Spangenberg before Villanueva went off yesterday. Headley looked really bad in his 2 starts (small sample) and Spangenberg, who looks pretty good, is in LF today.
Dave
4:43
The Holland signing makes the Gregerson and Norris signings pretty unnecessary, no?
Jason Martinez
4:46
Depends on how they would've used the $ they gave those guys. There's room for all of them. Gregerson is a good setup man. Norris can pitch multiple innings. Those guys can help.

The A's starting pitching looks bad.  any hope for Cahill or Brett Anderson?  Thanks.
Jason Martinez
4:48
Cahill looked really good when healthy with the Padres last year. I think he'll be in the rotation after 2 MiLB starts. Never know with Anderson. He looked OK at times with the Jays late in the season.

I’m ROY baby!!!
Jason Martinez
4:50
2 consecutive games on the bench after an 0-for-4 on Sunday. And probably back to the Minors soon. Can't be ROY from the bench or Triple-A.
Spencer
4:51
Is this Patrick Corbins breakout year? What do you see his stats being?
Jason Martinez
4:53
I thought he broke out in 2013 (3.41 ERA, 200+ innings, 7.7 K/9). But if he can keep striking guys out at this rate, I'd consider it another "break out" from good-to-great pitcher.
Thomas
4:53
When will we see Willy Adames playing for the Tampa Rays.
Jason Martinez
4:54
Probably mid-season. He can force himself to the Majors earlier.
Wes
4:55
Gabe Kapler should be worried about his job right?
Jason Martinez
4:56
After 5 games??? No. 2019 is a more realistic timetable for the Phillies to be playoff contenders so there is room for Kapler to learn on the job.
Preston Tucker
4:57
Anyway to add back the relief pitcher day to day usage chart on rosterresource?  I found that really helpful in determining who might be available out of the pen on any given night
Jason Martinez
4:57
The Closer Depth Chart has 4 relievers for each team ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-closer-depth-chart/
I'll be adding the daily features (bullpen usage, last 6 lineups, next 6 projected starters, power rankings) to the team pages by Friday.

4:58
Surprised about the Blackmon extension? What does this mean for Nolan?
Jason Martinez
5:00
Not really. After this past offseason and given his age (32 in July), I'm sure he's happy to avoid becoming a free agent and guaranteeing himself $108MM.
5:01
I doubt this affects Arenado. He'll be heading into his age-28 season as a free agent. One of the best players in baseball. He's going to get PAID.

1st time through the Cards rotation and Flaherty was the most impressive. Is he still the odd man out when Wainwright is ready?
Jason Martinez
5:03
Already sent to AAA. He'll be back at some point in '18. They're not going to overreact after 1 turn through the rotation.
Casey
5:04
When should the orioles sell? Too soon now?
Jason Martinez
5:05
It won't be earlier than June and that's only if they're out of a playoff spot by 10+ games.
Acuna Matata
5:06
Can Preston Tucker delay us from seeing Ronald Acuna in 2 weeks?
Jason Martinez
5:07
Not Tucker on his own. But the combination of Tucker playing well and Acuña not getting off to a great start in Triple-A could delay it.
James Franco
5:08
O/U Rays win total: 52
Jason Martinez
5:09
Over. It's really hard to lose 100+ games. Rays have a lot of good young starting pitchers and enough hitting to win 70 games, as long as the bullpen isn't a dumpster fire.

Why are the mets not considering bruce at first? They finally have a solid defensive outfield just to ruin it
