MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: August 15, 2018

Jason Martinez

Welcome. Several prospects called up in recent days who we've discussed here ... Mullins, Reid-Foley, Ward. All had to be added to the 40-man roster after this season as opposed to those who don't have to be added yet (Vlad Jr., Peter Alonso, etc.).  Very important aspect of potential late-season call-ups.
4:36
You can find this info on Roster Resource. For example, you'll see "Dec'19" next to Vlad Jr. ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-toronto-blue-jays/

Do you see David Bote becoming something reminiscent to a regular player in 2019 (say 350 PA+)?
Jason Martinez
4:39
Yep. Cubs are good at working 9-10 guys into the lineup. Still a bit crowded there if everyone is healthy and no offseason trades, but he has a good shot to get 300+ PAs.

How beneficial will it be for the Padres if Myers can be playable at 3B, 1B, OF?
Jason Martinez
4:42
It's worth finding out if he can be at least an average 3B. Looks OK so far. Hasn't had to make any difficult plays. But I don't think there's much of a chance that they go into the offseason with the idea that Myers is their 3B in '19. More about keeping Renfroe in the lineup.

Hey Jason, did you know Jeff already had a chat today?  He thought it was Thursday, not Wednesday.  Would you like to take thr night off?
Jason Martinez
4:44
I did not know that. I never know what day it is so I'm surprised I haven't done that yet.
Ace of Braves
4:44
Is there a chance of a Craig Kimbrel Braves reunion this offseason?
Jason Martinez
4:45
Hope so. I love reunions. And they need a closer. Kimbrel-Minter-Vizcaino would be solid.
Ammiel
4:45
Hey Jason. Any ideas on what size contract Ryu might get this offseason? Surely not beyond 2 years?
Jason Martinez
4:47
Not that any GM would listen to me, but I wouldn't give any pitcher more than a 2-year deal. Injury risk is too great. Ryu has been hurt a lot. Let's see how he finishes, but I think a 2-yr, $15MM sounds about right.

4:47
Who could be the next Rays to leave town by September 1st?
Jason Martinez
4:47
Sergio Romo. I'm surprised he's still there. Maybe they just really like having him around.
Eppler
4:48
We need starting pitching this year, will I bring up Jose Suarez? He needs to be added to the 40 this year anyway
Jason Martinez
4:50
Possible. He's deserving. Only reason I could think of is if they want him to shut it down. Only 20 yrs old. But still under 100 IP so I can see him getting a few starts.
John
4:50
Pollock to the White Sox... 3yrs/30 mill?
Jason Martinez
4:51
Pollock is getting way more than that. If not for all the injuries, I think he'd get $100MM+. As things stand, I'm thinking closer to what Lo Cain got (5/80).
Chris
4:52
Do you think the Padres will wait until September to call up Luis Urias?
Jason Martinez
4:54
I hope not. I'd like to see him have 100+ PAs under his belt heading into '19. They waited until after AAA playoffs (mid-September) with Renfroe/Margot a few years back. Hopefully they don't pull that again with Urias.

First pitch they drill acuna now he looks hurt
Jason Martinez
4:54
Someone just walked by and told me this. Not cool.

4:57
Are the White Aox going to keep Eloy down to save service time?
Jason Martinez
4:58
That would be the only reason they're doing it. Problem is that he's too good to send back down once they call him up. So it's difficult to give him a month in the Majors and then send him to AAA to start next season.  In any case, I think he'll be there by September 1.

Suarez was signed as a 16 yr. old and has only played 4 years.  He doesn't need to be added to the 40 man roster yet, so he will not see Anaheim this year (as a player).
Jason Martinez
5:02
He signed during the 2014 season. That would be year 1 and then '15-18 would total five. From what I understand, that first year counts even though he wasn't assigned to a team.
Craig
5:02
Dodgers pen makes me sad, who do you think they might add before the end of the month?
Jason Martinez
5:05
My regular chance to say that the Dodgers really needed an 8th inning guy this past offseason and again at the trade deadline and failed. Now they don't have a 9th inning guy, either.
Maybe they can bring back Romo.
Stubby
5:07
Do Dubon and Arcia compete for the Brewers ss in the spring?
Jason Martinez
5:09
If they consider Dubon a capable SS, then I would think so. I think they see him more as a 2B and he didn't get a chance to show he could handle SS this season because of the injury.
Jim
5:10
Who is the biggest mover on the prospect list by opening day 2019?
Jason Martinez
5:12
I would use my MiLB Power Rankings as a reference ... https://www.rosterresource.com/milb-power-rankings/  Check out the players high on the list, under age 23 and who weren't ranked in their organization's pre-season Top 10. That's what I'd look for.
5:13
So Luis Rengifo (LAA), Kevin Smith (TOR), Denyi Reyes (BOS), Vidal Brujan (TB) would all stand out to me.
And if you get a chance, look up their stat lines this season. Impressive.
David
5:14
MLB needs to send a strong message and ban Jose Urena. Throwing at a hitter because they keep hitting home runs off of you is stupid.
Jason Martinez
5:15
I'm gonna go ahead and blame it on Don Mattingly. Probably an unwritten rule from 1987. Stop hitting HRs or we're gonna drill you in the ribs.
RSO
5:18
What is wrong with Gleyber Torres?
Jason Martinez
5:20
I've seen some of the best hitters in the game put up pitcher-like numbers (.175/.275/.375) for 3-4 weeks at at time. Baseball is difficult. Just a bit more alarming when a kid is in a slump since they don't have the track record yet.

When will we find out the 2 PTBNL’s whom the Tigers are getting from the A’s for pitcher Mike Fiers?
