So the Twins are 5 games over .500, in the lead for the 2nd Wild Card spot and Bartolo Colon/Dillon Gee are their 4th/5th starters. The game of baseball is so predictable!

With Leake now in Seattle, who fills his spot in the rotation long term? Lynn?
Jason Martinez
4:36
I'd pencil in Luke Weaver and Jack Flaherty into rotation spots next April with Wainwright (if healthy) and Wacha and I think they'll target a frontline guy in free agency. I can see them bringing back Lynn if the price is right. They also have Alex Reyes coming back (probably around mid-season). Zac Gallen and Sandy Alcantara could also help out in '18.

What do you think of the mariners getting mike leake, and why not go after verlander if they really want to make a run
Jason Martinez
4:39
I don't think they had the prospects to get Verlander, even if they took on most of that contract. Dipoto's strategy of acquiring what seems like 10-12 different rotation candidates and hoping 3-4 work out hasn't gone all that well but I don't think it was a bad idea. Still only 3.5 games out. Worth a shot to pick up Leake. Change of scenery can help.

Does Profar or Aledmys Diaz make sense for the Padres to pursue in the offseason? Anybody else make sense?
Jason Martinez
4:42
Sure. Value is down for both. 1-year stop-gaps haven't worked out for them. Even with Tatis emerging as their SS of the future, I don't know if he'll be ready to contribute until 2019. So maybe a guy like Profar with 2 years of club control makes sense.

Darvish will be on what team next season?
Jason Martinez
4:43
I think the Dodgers will have the best chance. This front office will continue to be cautious with how much $ they spend in free agency, but Darvish has the star power to make it up with ticket sales.

Is Nimmo a future starter, or just a fifth outfielder?
Jason Martinez
4:46
Probably 4th OF, but he has another month to convince the Mets otherwise. They're set with Conforto/Cespedes. If Nimmo doesn't impress during his extended look as a starter, I think they'll try to acquire a CF this offseason.
Connor
4:49
3 biggest contracts this offseason?
Jason Martinez
4:49
I'll say Yu Darvish, Justin Upton and Eric Hosmer.
Cardinals
4:50
With Leak leaving town, does that give the cardinals the ability to go after a big bat and a front line pitcher in the offseason?
Jason Martinez
4:51
I think they'll go after a closer, too, with Rosenthal not expected to pitch in '18. Should be an interesting offseason for them. Freeing up some $ in the Leake trade helps.

Hey Jason, love your work. Can you give me a possible 2019 WhiteSox rotation? Thanks
Jason Martinez
4:53
Looks good on paper ... Carlos Rodon, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Michael Kopech, Alec Hansen.  Never know with young pitchers, though.
Pedro
4:55
Dos you see the yankees firing Girardi?
Jason Martinez
4:55
Why? They're probably going to the playoffs and I (and most others) didn't think they'd make it to the playoffs. That's called overachieving.
Austin Barnes
4:56
The Dodgers should trade Yasmani Grandal during the off-season, don't you agree?
Jason Martinez
4:56
Austin Barnes, you seem like the real deal. Can't see you in a backup role next season so something has to give. Shopping Grandal makes a lot of sense.

Will Miami trade Stanton
Jason Martinez
5:00
I don't think they will. It's hard to know what the new ownership group will want to do, but I don't know why they'd trade this guy. He's a legit superstar under contract through his prime. Home Runs put fans in the seats!

Any veteran shortstops I can find if the Russell injury lingers and I don't wanna wear out Baez?
Jason Martinez
5:03
Doubtful. Sounds like Zack Cozart and Jose Iglesias were both pulled back off waivers. Adam Rosales (Dbacks) would be a good guy to have on the bench in September, but it's unlikely he's available now that Nick Ahmed (fractured wrist) is probably out for the season.

Who takes second al wc
Jason Martinez
5:06
I'll go with the Orioles. Even though I've said here a few times this season that their future was bleak, they've won 7 in a row, Machado is heating up and Bundy is looking like an ace.

5:07
Glasnow and Brault..whI checked Pirate starter will one of them replace?
Jason Martinez
5:09
I think they'll go with a 6-man rotation in September and shut down at least one of the young guys (Taillon, Williams, Kuhl) at some point. Nick Kingham and Clay Holmes could also get a look.

Padres need a top 15 prospect within the next year or so. How can they get one, considering they're overachieving on their tank?
Jason Martinez
5:12
They don't have any players that would bring one back in a trade. Even top draft picks aren't considered Top 25 prospects right away. I think guys like Hunter Greene and Royce Lewis in the Top 50, but not as high as 15. A top 10-15 prospect will typically develop into one (see Fernando Tatis, Jr.). Mackenzie Gore could be there by next offseason.

Hey Jason. Who are your picks for MVP, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Reliever of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year in both the AL and NL?
Jason Martinez
5:17
ROY: Bellinger and Judge Cy Young: Scherzer and Sale MVP: Stanton and Altuve  Comeback: Greg Holland. Justin Smoak comes to mind, but I'm not sure what he's coming back from. He's more of a Breakout Player.
Trixie
5:19
Looks like the Padres will keep all three of their Rule 5 acquisitions.  Do you think they will repeat the same strategy for next year?
Jason Martinez
5:19
No chance. Even though they'll still be in rebuild mode, I think they'll be looking to improve and maybe shooting for a .500 season. They also have a lot of talent on the way as it is. I can see them taking a shot at another pitcher, similar to Perdomo/Diaz who they can stash in the 'pen.

What's up with Ender Inciarte and 5 hit games? Seems like he's hit at least 5 of those games this year.
Jason Martinez
5:21
It seemed like he was doing that against the Padres a few years back before anyone knew who he was.  Glad he's doing it against other teams now.

Are my tigers going to trade upton before sept 1? Or is he going to leave us via his opt out with us getting nothing in return?
Jason Martinez
5:24
It's tricky, but possible he's traded. If he stays with the Tigers, I think he will definitely opt out. Even if his agent isn't 100% sure he can do better, I think the state of the franchise (not good) will factor into his decision. If he's traded, it needs to be a contender and it needs to be a team who is willing to take on his contract just in case he doesn't opt out.
