First playoff contender in line. I believe that would be the Marlins or Cardinals.

What kind of prospects will the Orioles want for Machado?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:33
Even 1 year of Machado will be costly, especially with how he's finishing the year. I'm thinking 2 elite prospects to get the talks started. For the Braves, who will definitely be in the mix, I think it would take 2 of Albies, Acuña, Allard, Soroka, Ian Anderson and maybe 2 from the next tier, which would include guys like Gohara, Joey Wentz, Kyle Wright.

Who is the best prospect we should expect to see get called up this september?

These guys should get a look ... Willy Adames (TB), Franklin Barreto (OAK), J.P. Crawford (PHI), Willie Calhoun (LAD)

Mozeliak starting Flaherty's arb clock - good idea or should they use the roster spot to protect a player from Rule 5?

This is an area of need for a playoff contender so service time/arbitration/40-man roster not really a factor. If he's so good that he never goes to the minors, I don't think they'll regret it. If not, he'll make up for it down the road (see Hunter Renfroe, Padres).

Any chance Rox get back Rule 5 loss Dan Winkler?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:39
Doubtful. After this season, I think he'll be less than 30 days from the Braves retaining full rights. So they can option him to the minors next May if they want.
Cards rotation

You forgot Carlos "Blue Hair" Martinez.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:43
Yes I did and I'm not sure why. 2018 Cardinals rotation depth ... Martinez, Wainwright, Wacha, Weaver, Flaherty, Gallen, Alcantara, Gomber and Alex Reyes (mid-season). This is not bad at all, especially if Wainwright is healthy. I can still see them adding a frontine or at least mid-rotation starter.

Do the Angels still have the worst farm system in baseball? Where can I find the most up to date farm rankings?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:47
Not sure if there is a recent ranking of all 30 teams anywhere. Angels are still bottom of the league, but I wouldn't be surprised if they've risen into the 23-27 range, particularly because of guys like Jahmai Jones, Matt Thaiss, Jaime Barria, Grayson Long and Luis Peña all having good seasons.

How can you say goldschmidt isn't the MVP? Stanton had a great month but take the whole season into consideration before you make thaw argument for stanton
AvatarJason Martinez
5:51
Goldschmidt at .318/.427/.599/1.026 vs Stanton at .295/.387/.670/1.057. I'd say they're both MVP-caliber seasons and a few others are also right there. At least 3-4 deserving players will not win it.

Yes, sorry. And good thing because I don't think you'd get a September call-up with the Dodgers. I believe your new team will want to get a look in September, though.

Carlos Gonzalez looking at 1/8-10 next year ?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:54
I think he can do better than that, but 1-year seems very likely. Maybe $12-$14MM.

Does Syndergaard make another start this season?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:57
Mets season is over. They should play it safe and just shut him down, but it sounds like he's making progress. I wouldn't expect him to make more than 3 more starts and he'd probably have a pitch limit.

Did you see that ESPN named Buxton as the most disappointng CF in 2017 two weeks ago?  Things change so quickly and we're asking guys like you to name breakout candidates in Feb.  How happy are you that no one is logging all the predictions and which player is better calls that we force you to make in chats?
AvatarJason Martinez

Some of the smartest baseball people can't predict half the crazy things that happen every year. It's fun to go back and see the predictions. I know my offseason projection for Buxton is pretty close to where he is now, although I couldn't have predicted how bad he was early and good he was as of late. It all usually balances out.

Any thoughts on the 3B for the Braves next season? It seems unlikely they pursue Moose or trade for Machado.
AvatarJason Martinez
6:03
I think they have the prospects to acquire Machado and the $ to sign Moustakas. A lot of teams don't. I'm predicting something bold, so I wouldn't be surprised by either of those acquisitions.
6:05
Reminder that I predicted during the last 2 chats that a Verlander trade would go down very close to the deadline. If I had to guess a team, it would be the Astros. Thanks for chatting!
