MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: December 12, 2018
powered byJotCast
Jason Martinez

Apologies. It would've been cool to chat from inside Mandalay Bay so I could point out everyone who walks by. I'm at the airport, which is only 10 minutes away so I'm still kind of close by.

Who do you think the Nats target to replace Roark?
Jason Martinez
4:42
They have their big 3 and Ross/Fedde/veteran MiLB FA(s) yet to be signed should be able to hold down the 5th spot. They just need a reliable option for the No. 4. I just heard Anibal Sanchez. Makes sense. Someone like that.
Nationals
4:42
What was the point of that Roark trade who will we acquire to replace him?
Jason Martinez
4:42
Frees up about $9.8MM (projected arbitration salary)

4:43
Do you think alex verdugo will get traded. Do you project he will improve if he moves?
Jason Martinez
4:44
I think the Dodgers are definitely willing to move him in the right deal. Not sure if they need to do that unless it's for Realmuto. Sounds like they're working to move Puig/Kemp, which would free up at-bats for Verdugo.

Your thoughts on the Lynn deal?
Jason Martinez
4:47
It's a good deal. They had 4 holes in the rotation when the offseason started and they've added Smyly, Lynn and Volquez (added to 40-man after signing 2-yr MiLB deal last season). Still not nearly enough pitching, but they're in much better shape now. We'll see if they're aggressive in trying to add a frontline SP.

I was about to say "man, I bet you've got a lot of free time with this slow winter meetings"...then 3 acquisitions dropped in ~10 minutes...whoops?
Jason Martinez
4:49
It's exactly why I decided to come to the airport 6 hours before my flight. There was nothing happening. No rumors. Twitter silence. I figured it was the calm before the storm and I didn't want to get stuck in traffic while trades/signings were happening.

What does a Nick Castellanos package look like?
Jason Martinez
4:51
For 1 year of Castellanos? Probably their 5th or 6th best pitching prospect, which is still good. So maybe Gohara? I don't even know if they'd do that. Maybe Weigel and a good lower-level prospect.
Jerry Dipoto
4:52
Why have I been so quiet in the meetings?
Jason Martinez
4:54
Don't know. I'm sure they're exploring some deals. I saw him at the Starbucks in another casino (Luxor), which is attached to Mandalay Bay but a good 10-15 minute walk. He wasn't even on the phone.

Justin Bour nice signing for Angels. Pujols on bench?
Jason Martinez
4:57
Eventually, if he's not on the DL or released. I think they'll be patient with Ohtani so Pujols could start the season on the DL. But there won't be many at-bats for Albert when Ohtani returns. It will give the Angels a few weeks, at least, to figure out how much he has left in the tank.

Are padre fans going to be disappointed with no moves?
Jason Martinez
4:59
Fans of any team are disappointed with no moves. Even Red Sox fans want trades/signings and they just won the WS.
Padres fans shouldn't be disappointed, though. Maybe surprised since I thought they would do a lot. But still very early and not many teams have done much.

Hey Jason, I really enjoy your weekly chats. I was wondering have you ever appeared on local radio in San Diego?
Jason Martinez
5:02
Thanks! I have not but they should have me on. I've been a Padres fan since 1982 and I have a scrapbook to prove that I was following the team as a 6-year old.

Athletics reaching out about Profar. What kind of return would the Rangers get if it happened?
Jason Martinez
5:05
I wonder if Dustin Fowler would still have strong enough value after he struggled last season. He could bounce back. He was coming back from a really bad leg injury. Maybe Fowler, an MLB reliever and a good lower-level prospect?

Bour to the Angels?
Jason Martinez
5:06
Yep. Updated roster projection here ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-los-angeles-angels/

Is it smart for Tampa to sign Cruz to a 2 year contract?
Jason Martinez
5:10
Yeah. They have a lot of young talent and versatility. There is room for a DH-only veteran who can be a force in the middle of their lineup. If it doesn't work out, it's only two years and probably not a huge AAV (maybe $12-16MM). Even with Morton signed, they don't have much on the payroll. And Cruz might be their last significant addition (if signed). At least one that will have a big salary.

Can you explain the difference of opinion between JP Crawford and Amed Rosario to me? They're both 23 and had very similar #'s in the minors. Rosario has 762 PA's in MLB and JP has 225. Crawford was hurt and played out of position last year and he still has the much higher career WAR/600 - including incredible Def WAR in 2017 - when played exclusively at SS, his real position. Yet, the Mets won't send Rosario for Realmuto and all the pundits say the Mariners basically got nothing but some salary relief from the Phillies for Segura. I'm really confused...
Jason Martinez
5:12
Biggest difference for me is upside. Rosario's upside is huge. He could become a star. Crawford looks like he can be a very good regular.

Any talk of Kimbrel’s landkbg spot?
Jason Martinez
5:14
Not really. If he's really asking for 6 years, I wouldn't expect many rumors anytime soon.  I think he can easily get 4 years and maybe 5. Not sure who would value a closer that much to give him 6 years. Even if he's still one of the best in baseball.

Hard to believe the A’s are looking at 2nd Baseman instead of handing the Job to Franklin Barreto.  Considering they gave up Josh Donaldson for Barreto, don’t they owe it to themselves to find out if Barreto can play or not?
Jason Martinez
5:17
He has 1 more MiLB option, he's unproven and only entering his age-23 season. Only a rebuilding team or a team that doesn't have many holes on their roster would be willing to just hand him the job. Better to have depth and give him a chance to win the job. With Semien only 2 years away from free agency, Barreto gives them coverage at either 2B or SS.

Will I deal Salvy, Duffy, Kennedy or Merrifield this off-season?
Jason Martinez
5:21
I'm sure they're considering all offers, but it doesn't sound like it. I'm sure they'd love to trade Kennedy, but I can't imagine he has much value right now. After what Oakland did last season, I'm sure most teams are thinking "let's at least go into the season and figure out if we're better than expected".  If not, they can shop guys at the deadline.
Ryan
5:22
Would Hader and Huira be enough to get Syndergaard?
Jason Martinez
5:25
Probably not, although I'd have to think it would be close. If the Mets absolutely loved Hiura (they probably do) and it wasn't going to tick off Robinson Cano to eventually move to 1B, I think they'd consider it. But they'd also have to feel good about their chances of adding another good SP to replace Syndergaard.

Will Smith for Tyler O’neill?
Jason Martinez
5:27
Not for 1 year of Will Smith. That's more of a July desperation move because their bullpen is killing them. I'm sure they'd rather sign a free agent lefty than give up O'Neill. Especially with Jose Martinez likely to be traded and the chance that Fowler doesn't bounce back.
