$20MM reasons why Matt Cain will get that job. But I think his leash will be short. Blach, Blackburn, Beede are all closing in on the majors.
Andrew
5:11
In your best guess, what kind of contract does EE get?
Jason Martinez
5:11
My guess is that the price gets down to 3/60, which gets a few teams involved. The bidding war between those teams will boost it into the 3/66 or 4/80 range.
Andrew
5:13
Phillies now have 9 viable rotation pieces between the mlb level and tripleA. Do you think a trade is brewing to acquire an impact, yet controllable bat?
Jason Martinez
5:13
No, I really just think they want to keep some of those guys in AAA for a few more months. Young pitchers are fragile. Nola/Velasquez have injury concerns. Plan would be to flip Hellickson/Buchholz at the deadline to make room for whoever is pitching the best out of Thompson/Asher/Appel/Lively/etc.

Are the Nats stuck with an in-house closer or do they have enough to still make a move?
Jason Martinez
5:14
I think there is still a good chance they trade for David Robertson, but I also don't think they're in a position where they have to overpay for him. Shawn Kelley is good and Blake Treinen might even be better. He's Just unproven in that 9th inning role. They'd still need to add another setup man if they stay in-house, though.

Will trout cost more than sale?
Jason Martinez
5:16
A lot more. Only a few teams could afford to trade for Sale. Not sure any team has what it takes to acquire Trout.
Maria
5:20
How would you gauge the difference in value between Sonny gray and Chris archer
Jason Martinez
5:20
Gray was really bad in '16 and missed time with an elbow injury. He has 3 yrs left of club control. Archer's numbers were down slightly in '16, but still very good. Club control for 5 more seasons at very team-friendly rate. Archer's value is way higher than Gray right now.
Tyler
5:22
Who's an ideal pitcher you think the Padres would sign on more than just a 1 year deal?
Jason Martinez
5:22
Maybe Travis Wood if they believe in him as a starter. He wouldn't sign in SD unless he really wanted to start and they were the only team willing to give him the chance.
Sully
5:23
Where does J Roll fit in with the giants?
Jason Martinez
5:23
I imagine he'll get plenty of work at 3B and 2B in spring training and they'll decide if he's a better bench option than Ehire Adrianza. Other than that, he's AAA depth and wouldn't be needed unless Crawford was injured. Not sure he wants to play in the minors at this point of his career.

Is DeLeon Buhler and oaks fair trade for dozier
Jason Martinez
5:27
My guess is, aside from De Leon, that the Twins are pushing hard for one of the guys closer to the majors (Bellinger or Calhoun).

Since the cost of pitching is so high, should Cleveland deal Bauer to someone like Houston or Colorado? This could allow them to move up Tomlin to the fourth spot in the rotation, and let Anderson, Clevinger, Plutko, Merritt, Morimando, and maybe a minor league signee battle for the fifth spot.
Jason Martinez
5:33
I think the Indians are one of the few teams who can afford to trade a SP. Not a lot of buzz on Bauer, but he'd be an interesting trade chip. Not a No. 1 but he's a good No. 3 with potential to be a No.2. Under contract for 4 more seasons. Only 25 yrs old. A lot of tams are looking for cost-controlled young pitching. Asking price will be high.

5:35
Here we go again with the EE business... are we at all close to a resolution on this do you think?
Jason Martinez
5:35
I bet he agrees to a deal before XMAS
Cory
5:38
Do the Giants have enough to trade for Frazier?
Jason Martinez
5:38
I think so. Question is whether they value his power enough to give up a good prospect so he can play ahead of Eduardo Nuñez at 3B. Nuñez had 16 HR, 40 SB last season.
Vince Guerrero
5:40
Will Meadows and Bell be involved, if the Bucs trade for Quintana?
Jason Martinez
5:40
One, probably not both. Including Bell makes sense since he'll have a chance to play in the White Sox OF or he can DH. Not a good 1B. Don't know if the Pirates would give up Meadows since he's the guy who is supposed to replace Cutch once he's traded or leaves as a free agent.
Mark
5:41
When does Trumbo resign with the Orioles or do the Orioles really move on from him...
Jason Martinez
5:42
Not sure Trumbo has too many other options so I think he ends up staying. With Duquette's success signing guys late in free agency, I think he's fine standing pat until Trumbo's price comes down enough.
Rich
5:44
Any chance the Braves trade for Dozier and have Rodriguez play 3rd full time?
Jason Martinez
5:44
I think they're good at 2B with Jace Peterson (.740 OPS vs RHP in '16) as the stop gap until Ozzie Albies is ready. Adonis Garcia is the 3B and Sean Rodriguez will play all over. I wouldn't rule it completely out. I just think they really like Albies and he's close to the majors.
Cole
5:46
Does Jason Hammel have a job before the start of Spring Training?
Brian
5:48
Do the Dodgers really start season with 4 LH pitchers in rotation, any way to trade kazmir
Jason Martinez
5:48
Oh yeah. He can be patient because most teams need SP help and he's good enough to be in most starting rotations. His agent is likely asking for 3 years and he'll probably end up with 2.
Looks that way. I don't think they'll trade Kazmir (he would have plenty of interest) unless they really believe in Brandon McCarthy's ability to stay healthy/pitch better than he has since signing with them.
Cliff
5:50
Off the top of your head, what's the most successful outfield platoon you remember seeing?
Jason Martinez
5:52
I remember Will Venable/Chris Denorfia having some really good combined numbers in 2012 or 2013.
Brett
5:53
Cubs 5th starter?
Jason Martinez
5:53
I don't mind Mike Montgomery getting a shot. But that's why Tyson Ross makes so much sense. Montgomery, whether he's pitching well or not, could shift to the 'pen once Ross is back to full health.
Dan
5:56
Does Boston make a sneaky pickup of Joey Bats or EE on a short term deal with the $ they saved?
Jason Martinez
5:56
Unless Dombrowski is lying, that Buchholz deal was done to get them under the $195MM payroll to avoid the luxury tax. They are right around there now so they're probably done.
JC
5:57
Not a lot of talk about JP Howell or Jon Niese. Coming off bad years what kind of contract could they expect.
