MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: December 27, 2017

Jason Martinez

Pretty much nothing has happened since last Wednesday unless you think Yoshihisa Hirano, new Dbacks reliever, can have the same impact that Seung Hwan Oh had as a rookie. Still a lot to discuss. Go.
Sandy
4:34
Do you see dom smith being productive this year?
Jason Martinez
4:35
Yes. Just probably need to look at him as a mid-season call-up. His prospect stock was rising after the year he was having as a 21-yr old in AAA. Wasn't quite ready, though. They'll sign a stop-gap for at least April/May.
NOT Mickey Koke
4:35
Not a lot of Brad Hand trade talk - even with Britton going down. Who do you think makes most sense in a potential deal with SD
Jason Martinez
4:37
Lots of great fits, but Astros are perfect fit. They need another guy who can close in case Giles can't be trusted at some point. And they need a lefty to balance out a bullpen with several right-handers ... Giles, Musgrove, Devenski, Joe Smith, Rondon, Will Harris.

Do the Nats need a 5th starter or will one of Cole or Fedde start the season in the rotation?
Jason Martinez
4:39
I think they'd be fine with either Cole or Fedde to start the season. Regardless, they lack depth to get thru 162 games. Might be easiest to acquire a 5th starter, keep Cole as a swingman and allow Fedde to continue to develop in AAA until he's needed.

I heard the Jay's may be "hiding in the weeds" with done of the bigger players left, i.e. j d Martinez. Do you think they sign a decent of or so?
Jason Martinez
4:41
Sure, I can see that. No rush, because there are more decent OF options than teams who have the need and are willing to pay a decent price. Pretty sure they'll end up with at least one of Bruce, CarGo, Carlos Gomez, Lorenzo Cain. Might as well wait out JDM and see if his price drops far enough.
Dan
4:42
Any Yankees news?
Jason Martinez
4:42
Pretty sure all MLB front offices decided that working 365 days per year isn't necessary and they should all take a week off.
Jake
4:43
I hear Adonis Garcia is headed to Korea from the braves.who will his replacement be ?
Jason Martinez
4:45
He was a bench candidate. Assuming they sign a 3B, he probably would've been odd man out for a bench job with Camargo, Culberson, Adams, Tucker all in the mix.
Christian
4:45
Who hits more homers in 2018, Hoskins or Bellinger?
Jason Martinez
4:46
Hold on. I'm working on 2018 projections now. Let me check and see what my initial projection is ...
4:49
I have Bellinger with 40 and Hoskins with 33. I will tweak these as I take a closer look at some advanced stats. I like them both a lot, obviously, but I trust Bellinger a bit more to adjust to the adjustments that will be made after '17.
Joe
4:49
Kendrys Morales for Jordan Zimmermann and cash or prospect, who hangs up first?
Jason Martinez
4:50
Tigers would hang up fast. Zimmermann is young and capable of bouncing back if he can stay healthy. Morales will probably be OK again in '18, but appears to be on the decline. Also limited to DH and the Tigers already have V-Mart and will likely need to give Miguel Cabrera plenty of time at DH, too.
Bobby Evans
4:51
Why do I love Hamilton so much when I can have similar production from Dyson without losing prospects?
Jason Martinez
4:53
Only rumors so far. We don't know if Evans loves Hamilton more than Dyson or vice versa. Maybe he'll sign them both to cover all that ground at AT&T Park. Or maybe he'd rather make the big splash and acquire McCutchen.
Sandy Alderson
4:54
Jed Lowrie had a 4.0 WaR stat.  Should I trade for him?
Jason Martinez
4:56
You should be interested in trading for him, but I'm assuming the price will be very high for a guy who had a career season in '17. Considering he's going into his age-34 season, injury history and he wasn't very good from '14-16, that would be a risky move.
Manny
4:57
Does Matt Kemp have any chance to find a home for the 2018 season?
Jason Martinez
4:59
Maybe the White Sox can give him some ABs as the DH. It would be a tough fit, even if his attitude wasn't going to be questioned after how things ended in SD and ATL.
Sandoval
4:59
What is your theory on SD Signing homer for 120mill/5 years ??
Jason Martinez
5:01
Pretty sure they determined an offer that they were comfortable with (6/120 is the rumor), which is much lower than he's asking for, and won't budge on that. If his market isn't great, which appears to be the case, he could fall into their laps.
Erik
5:02
Well Jason . . . if the Astros do deal for Hand, what would they be giving up to get him?
Jason Martinez
5:05
Not their top prospect (Forrest Whitley) and not their next best prospect (Kyle Tucker), but possible a deal centered around one of their next best prospects (JB Bukauskas, Rogelio Armenteros). They have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball so the overall package should be very strong.
Ray Verno
5:05
Now that the Orioles have lost their closer for a while, do you think that a package from the Yankees that includes either Bettances or Robertson, with a prospect or two, for Machado, would get the deal done?
Jason Martinez
5:07
If the O's trade Machado, they're rebuilding so you'd expect a package of top prospects in return. It will no longer matter who their closer will be in '18. They'd probably trade Brach and probably O'Day, so it would likely be Mychal Givens if they move ahead with a rebuild.
Yants from Fort Myers
5:07
I think the Rays moving Brad Miller makes a ton of sense, but I’m not sure of a potential trade partner. Any ideas?
Jason Martinez
5:08
A year ago, his value was at its peak after his 30-HR season. But he was awful in '17. The smart thing to do is hope he bounces back and then shop him at the trade deadline/next offseason.

Why does MLB Trade Rumors/Roster Resources have Clevinger pitching at AAA? Isn't he better than Chen, Salazar or Tomlin.
Jason Martinez
5:11
Projected rotation is Kluber, Carrasco, Bauer, Salazar, Tomlin. (Who is Chen?). He is, arguably, a better option than Tomlin. But Tomlin is a good No. 5, has not options and a guaranteed contract. Clevinger can still pitch in AAA until needed.
5:12
With that said, this is also why I regularly mention the Indians as having enough SP depth to make a trade.
Dan
5:13
In your opinion who is the best fit for a Yelich trade?
Jason Martinez
5:16
Based on his age, contract, ability to play all 3 OF spots, hit anywhere in the lineup, it's hard to count out any team. It really comes down to which teams have the best/deepest farm system. These teams would qualify ... CWS, SD, ATL, PHI, NYY, HOU ... and probably a few more. But it would take a lot to pry away Yelich. Marlins aren't likely to make any other moves just to cut payroll.
Bullpen Q's
5:16
Could Tony Watson land a 9th inning gig? Rangers and Angels might make some sense!
Jason Martinez
5:19
I doubt it. He's been so good as an 8th inning guy for years. While he wasn't terrible as the Pirates' closer, he did lose that job because he wasn't as reliable. He could end up on a team where he has a chance to get some save opps, but more likely a 20-25 holds/5-10 saves guy.
Jason
5:19
What do the red sox do if they don't sign JD Martinez?
