MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: February 15, 2017

Jason Martinez
4:32
Welcome to the 1st Spring Training 2017 edition of my chat! Already lots of players declaring that they're in the best shape of their lives and lots of injured players declaring that they'll be ready way before the doctor says they'll be ready.

Who takes the last 2 spots in the rotation for Yanks?
Jason Martinez
4:33
Have to think Luis Severino locks up a spot with a halfway decent spring. After that, I think it's between Chad Green, Luis Cessa and Bryan Mitchell, although Chance Adams could force his way into the mix. He will eventually, even if not in April.

Wheeler hurt again ???
Jason Martinez
4:36
The wording of the report— "tenderness", I believe—makes me think it's normal soreness for a guy who hasn't pitched much in the last 18 months or whatever it is. Setbacks are also common in TJ recovery, although there should be concern if he has another setback.

Any reason to think cardinals will go after Quintana
Jason Martinez
4:37
Nope. A healthy Alex Reyes is what they would've needed to acquire Quintana. Ironically, it was also the reason they didn't need to go after Quintana.

colby wants to be in texas, and texas doesnt have a 5th starter until Ross is ready, why havent they signed him yet?
Jason Martinez
4:39
I think they're fine with A.J. Griffin, Cashner and, if necessary, a guy like Nick Martinez or Dillon Gee on a short-term basis. Never can have too much depth, but I just don't think they're willing to pay him what he wants.
Jered Weaver

What is the most San Diego will pay for me?
Jason Martinez
4:39
Same as everyone else they've signed. $1.75MM.
Grayson
4:42
I noticed on RR that you had Adam Conley starting the year in the minors. I had him as their #2 starter. Explain your reasoning please.
Jason Martinez
4:43
Initially, it was just a numbers game. Why add Jeff Locke for $3MM to be in the bullpen? But after some research, I think they feel that Locke is valuable because he can pitch out of the bullpen and start whenever necessary. Regardless of where I had Conley on Opening Day, I still had him projected to make 25+ starts. Long season.

Who has the best bullpen in the majors?
Jason Martinez
4:47
Indians, Cubs, Yankees, Orioles all stand out to me. Contending teams need a strong bullpen, so most of them have a chance to be good. So many guys that we're not thinking of right now will make an impact. It probably won't matter too much, but the Padres can be very good once Carter Capps is healthy. Capps, Brandon Maurer, Ryan Buchter, Brad Hand would be tough if their starting pitcher ever hands them a lead.

4:47
Am I going to play baseball this season?
Jason Martinez
4:48
Definitely. Might need 3-4 more guys to blow out their elbows before a team is willing to give you an MLB deal. So maybe by the end of the week.

4:49
Do you think Allan Cordoba sticks on the 25 man all year for the Padres?
Jason Martinez
4:50
As committed as ownership appears to be on this rebuild, I don't see why not. If a guy can make the jump from Lo-A (I think that's where he played last season), he'd need to be a good defender and have plate discipline like Cordoba. It could get ugly at times, but could be a nice payoff.

How do you think Brandon Phillips does this year? Can we hope for a good year with him in a free agent year or is he just along for the ride?
Jason Martinez
4:54
I'd expect same as last year and maybe slightly better. Maybe .725-.750 OPS, 12-15 HR, 12-15 SB. Lots of doubles. Good defense. Change of scenery to home state, new stadium and pretty good team should help. If Braves fall out of the playoff chase in the 2nd half, I don't think they'll allow him to keep playing. They'll go with Albies.

4:56
Who has a better chance to start at 1st for Yanks: Carter or Bird?
Jason Martinez
4:56
Bird's job to lose, in my opinion, with Carter playing against LHP. If Bird struggles bad enough, Carter can play everyday. That's the good thing about adding Carter. He has value as a platoon player and gives them insurance for a young player who missed all of '16.
Adam
4:58
Would the Brewers be better off now if Lucroy has gone to Cleveland?
Jason Martinez
4:58
No reason to grade the Texas trade vs Milwaukee trade any differently at this point. If anything, Lewis Brinson's value might have risen a bit after the deal since he put up huge numbers late in the season. I think they're happy with the package of players they received.
Kyle
4:59
Will the Dodgers be using more 60 dl movements to sign Utley And Gutierrez?
Jason Martinez
5:00
Possibly, but I'm not sure there are two 40-man guys hurt right now. I could see guys like Eibner and maybe even Scott Van Slyke being DFA'd.

Braves Rotation, Folty at number 5?
Jason Martinez
5:01
Based on how he finished last season, it has to be his job to lose. But Matt Wisler could make things interesting. He's struggled, but very talented and capable of taking a step forward this season.

Why do most players who get shifted on refuse to hit against the shift? They are professional baseball players, surely they can learn to hit the other way.
Jason Martinez
5:04
I imagine they work on making adjustments, especially during the offseason, but can't risk messing with mechanics/approach too much. They stick with what got them there.
eppler
5:05
Like to trade Escobar any team need 3B get him cheap?
Jason Martinez
5:05
No team needs a 3B. At least not right now.
Tony Horton
5:06
Do you expect Austin Jackson to make the Indians opening day roster? Is there anyway (other than Brantley not being healthy) that both Jackson and Abraham Almonte both make the team?
Jason Martinez
5:07
If Brantley is healthy, it's doubtful they'd carry Jackson, Almonte and Brandon Guyer. I believe Almonte has an option so I do think he starts in AAA and Jackson makes the Opening Day roster and platoons in CF with Naquin. Guyer would platoon in RF with Chisenhall.

Can the Cards move Alex Reyes to the MiLB DL and save service time?
Jason Martinez
5:11
I'm not 100% certain, but I believe they cannot be optioned once they're hurt. Players can get options rescinded if they can prove that they were injured at the time they were optioned.

5:12
Cant the Dodgers put Ryu on the dl retroactively?
Jason Martinez
5:12
Retroactive to the last official Spring Training game he will pitch in. This is why a lot of the "questionable for Opening Day" guys will play in non-official games late in spring.

Cardinals rotation took a hit without Reyes, what realistic upgrade could they make to make their rotation somewhat-formidable?
