MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: February 22, 2017
powered byJotCast
Jason Martinez
5:14
He had 10 really good starts to begin 2016. I believe it was 8 quality starts and 2 others that were close. Then he got crushed in his 11th start, the Padres traded him and the owner decided it was a good idea to trash him in the media. I think he still has something left in the tank and motivated to prove it.

5:16
Mariner most likely to improve on performance from last year - Segura, Diaz, Paxton?
Jason Martinez
5:16
I don't see how Segura or Diaz can do any better. Expecting some regression with both. I think Paxton can take a step forward.
Jack
5:16
who would the nats rather keep between Norris and Lobo - if the return was the same?
Jason Martinez
5:17
Lobaton. He knows the staff. Good defensive catcher. Lower salary.

5:18
what is Blanton waiting for?
Jason Martinez
5:19
Waiting for some team to realize that he has a 2.65 ERA, 2.4 BB/9, 9.2 K/9 and 7.2 H/9 over the last 2 seasons. In all fairness, I don't know what he's asking. But he deserved to be one of the highest paid non-closers this offseason.

Does the Wieters signing improve the Chisox chances of getting Severino in a deal for Robertson?
Jason Martinez
5:22
Not too many good catching prospects around. I don't think they give up Severino in a deal for Robertson. I could see him included in something bigger. Not necessarily before Opening Day, though.

How many of the Braves projected starters (Teheran, Folty, Bartolo, Dickey, and Garcia) get traded this year?
Jason Martinez
5:25
If they're out of contention in July, I think they'll end up trading Bartolo and Garcia. Dickey is a maybe. He has a club option for '18. Even if they don't contend, they're very close so I don't see them shopping Teheran/Folty.
Christian
5:28
Do you think Ryan Howard will get picked up by anyone?
Jason Martinez
5:28
I think it's obvious he's not getting an MLB deal, but I'm sure a few AL teams would be willing to give him an MiLB deal. So it's really up to him and whether he's willing to go to AAA to start the season. He's a very rich man with a WS ring and an NL MVP. I wouldn't be surprised if he just called it a career.

5:29
Best guess to who is long-term Atlanta Braves 3B........? I don't think he is currently on the roster
Jason Martinez
5:30
I think Rio Ruiz has a chance to prove he can be that guy. If not, I think you're right. Probably not anyone currently in the organization.

Hola Jason, what do you think will be the CARDINALS starting infield? My take: 1B Carpenter, 2B Wong (or Gyorko), SS Diaz, 3B Peralta (or Gyorko) and C Molina (obviously).
Jason Martinez
5:33
I'm going with Carpenter, Wong, Diaz and Gyorko. But Peralta can change that if he proves he's healthy and still has something left in the tank at age 35. Gyorko is streaky, but a legit 30+ HR guy. We'll see how he does at 3B. Hasn't played there regularly since college.

5:33
Does Pedro Alvarez make sense for the White Sox?
Jason Martinez
5:34
My current projection at DH is a Cody Asche/Avisail Garcia platoon. I think that should answer your question.

5:34
With all due respect, you have a bit of an evil mastermind look going in your picture there, it might be the beard and semi-scowl.
Jason Martinez
5:35
I like that description.

5:36
Who are the starting pitchers for Reds going to be come opening week?
Jason Martinez
5:38
DeSclafani, Finnegan and Feldman are locks. I think they'd like Stephenson to step up and win a spot. They also might be the best landing spot for a FA who wants the best opportunity of winning an Opening Day spot. Maybe that's where Peavy or Doug Fister end up.
Pirate Fan
5:41
Who do you project in 4th/5th starting rotation spot for the Pirates. Personally I see Chad Kuhl in the #3 spot, but not sure if Glasnow needs more seasoning in AAA. What are your thoughts?
Jason Martinez
5:41
I think they'll take it slow with Glasnow. He wasn't quite ready last season. I think they'll wait until he dominates for a few weeks in AAA before he gets another shot. Cole, Nova and Taillon are 1-2-3. Kuhl should be No. 4. They plan on giving Drew Hutchison every chance to earn a spot. Brault and a few others will get a chance to beat him out.
Andrew
5:43
If the Rangers do try and DH Choo more and create an opening in LF, who do you have getting the most ABs out there?
Jason Martinez
5:43
I'd guess mostly Profar with Rua and Deshields in the mix. I currently have Loney at 1B with Napoli at DH and Choo in the OF. I do think they want to allow Choo to DH more often. Not necessarily on a regular basis.

5:44
Cards replacement for Reyes? Internal/trade/sign? Probability of Quintana trade?
Jason Martinez
5:46
I had Reyes starting the season in Triple-A, where they could manage his workload and then bring him up sometime in May. I think Luke Weaver will now be in that role, although he won't be as likely as Reyes was to be called up early in the season. I think Wacha will have a much longer leash now.
Scioscia
5:47
Should I start Valbuena at third and Cron at first and bench Escobar ?
Jason Martinez
5:47
Yunel hit over .300 and had a .355 OBP last season. Don't bench him.
Luis Ocque
5:49
Jason, I think Peralta will be the 3B for the Cardinals\
Jason Martinez
5:50
Maybe, but I'm betting on the guy who had a .547 SLG and 23 HR in the 2nd half.

5:50
Will the New York Yankees starting rotation is going allow them to compete for a playoff spot?
Jason Martinez
5:51
Unless Severino bounces back to his '15 form and either Green/Mitchell holds down a rotation spot, I don't think they have enough.
Royals Guy
5:55
Jason, What does a long term deal with KC look like for Hosmer? What would he be looking at vs if he were a free agent?
Jason Martinez
5:56
He's a Scott Boras client and he'll only be entering his age 28 season as a FA. I'm guessing the current asking price is a lot more than the Royals are willing to pay. I think Boras would ask for at least 6/120 now. If he makes it to free agency, I think he'll get closer to 5/90. That can change a lot based on his 2017 season, though.
carlito
5:58
Do you think Cody Bellinger has a real shot at making the team?
Jason Martinez
5:58
No chance unless A-Gon has an injury that knocks him out of action for more than the first month of the season.
Dre
5:59
So how many at bats can I expect to get this year for the Dodgers (if I'm healthy)? And who will I be sharing LF with?
