MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: February 8, 2017

I guess he could fit on the bench, although I don't see where he'd get many at-bats. Not very versatile. Makes more sense if he signs a MiLB deal and waits in AAA just in case Kipnis gets hurt.

Is CC Sabathia a less expensive (prospects) alternative for the Pirates than Quintana? Would the Yankees eat salary for somebody like Kuhl?
Jason Martinez
5:14
Way less expensive, yes. But I think the Yankees are pretty light on SP depth themselves. They need CC to give them 30 starts again, even if he's not close to the same guy he used to be.

5:16
what is a fair package for nationals to give for robertson? (before season starts)
Jason Martinez
5:17
If they were willing to take on most of his salary, I think they could get it done without including any of their top prospects (Fedde, Soto, Stevenson, Difo). I think it's a matter of finding the right balance of $/prospects.

Thoughts on the Chris Carter signing?
Jason Martinez
5:19
I like it. He crushes LHP and he's cheap ($3.5MM). Makes Yankees less reliant on an unproven player, whether that's taking ABs away from Austin, Judge or Frazier. Good thing is that he didn't cost them much so they won't have a long leash if one of the young players is pushing for playing time.

Jason u like sighing of Petit? Still have money for Wiethers
Jason Martinez
5:22
Yep. Versatile guys like that are valuable. Not easy to go from bullpen to the occasional spot start, but always seems to pitch well when given a chance. Surprised he didn't get an MLB deal.
In regards to their roster on paper, they make the most sense for Wieters. But I have no idea how much $ Artie Moreno is willing to spend.

how do you think Cubs handle there lineup with K. Schwarber coming back
Jason Martinez
5:25
Maddon has his work cut out for him, but I think he'll make it work somehow. Or an injury or two will clear it all up. If everyone is healthy, I think Schwarber gets the majority of starts in LF versus RHP. CF will be Jay/Almora. RF is Heyward's to lose. And if he's as bad as last season, he could lose it quick. Zobrist at 2B vs RHP and LF/RF vs LHP. Baez gets 2B vs LHP and starts occasionally vs RHP.

What are your views on the future bullpen options in Atlanta and who we have already up? Any potential Craig Kimbrel, Aroldis Chapman types? And do you see the braves once the rebuild is completely over having a team as good as the Cubs?
Jason Martinez
5:29
I think Arodys can be a very good late-inning option if healthy. Cabrera has the potential to be a shutdown closer. We'll see how he progresses this season. Minter should be in the mix soon. And there's a good chance that 1 or 2 from their current group of young pitching prospects ends up in the 'pen. Long ways to go.
5:30
I don't see them being as good as the Cubs. Braves system is deeper, but Cubs had so many elite prospects that they drafted with high picks following horrible seasons. Braves aren't likely to have any high draft picks from this point on, either.

5:32
PECOTA has Jarrod Dyson stealing 60 bases. You agree?
Jason Martinez
5:32
He can steal 60 bases if he plays everyday, which he probably isn't going to do. Even if he can handle the regular role vs RHP, I think they platoon him. I have him projected at 39 SB and 431 PAs.

5:33
Why aren't the Red Sox linked to Matt Weiters? I mean, they have options behind the plate and DH, but he would be a surer bet than any of Leon, Vazquez or Moreland would he not? And the price tag seems to be tempting.
Jason Martinez
5:36
I believe they were right up against the luxury tax so probably wouldn't want to spend any more, regardless of how much his price comes down. I think they like their group of catchers. Leon, even if he regresses some at the plate, would be pretty good. Vazquez is a great defender. Swihart is moving back to catcher, too.

Who takes Homer Baileys spot in the rotation?
Jason Martinez
5:39
I penciled in Tim Adleman since he was decent in 13 MLB starts last season. But it definitely would make it easier for one of they young guys to win a spot. And Bronson Arroyo would have a very good shot, if healthy. This could also convince them to sign one of the remaining starters (Peavy, Colby Lewis, Jorge De La Rosa).

MLBTR needs to make a "was David Rollins DFA'd today" tracker. Thoughts?
Jason Martinez
5:40
Again? Geez. I can't go off the radar for 90 minutes for a Live Chat without Rollins getting DFA'd.
J.P. Crawford
5:42
At what point do I make my major league debut this coming season?
Jason Martinez
5:43
I don't know, man. Galvis had 20 HRs last season. He went from "J.P. Crawford stop-gap" to sort of interesting. With that said, I'm guessing you'll be in the majors early in the 2nd half.

5:43
Can Profar find 350-400 ABs?
Jason Martinez
5:45
I think he can get close. Sounds like the Rangers are not against sending Gallo back to the minors, so he'll need a really big spring to get regular ABs as the DH against RHP. If not, I think those ABs could go to Profar, along with regular starts vs LHP.

5:48
Why dont more teams try to find closer solutions in house? Aka natd having faith in treinen/kelley?
Jason Martinez
5:49
As much as the experts think having a "proven closer" is overrated, teams are taking a big risk going without one. If it doesn't work out because that pitcher wasn't mentally strong enough to handle the pressure, things can get ugly really quick. Really takes the wind out of a team to win a game for 8 innings and lose in the 9th. Kind of like having an unreliable kicker in the NFL. It can demoralize a team to miss a last second kick to tie/win.

Are the projections right? Am I gonna be legit?
Jason Martinez
5:53
I have you posting a .785 OPS with 27 HR and 359 strikeouts.
Just kidding. 159 strikeouts.

Your preseason favorite for comeback of the year?
Jason Martinez
5:53
A.J. Pollock
Austin Jackson
5:54
I thought I had some value. Will I end up overseas or a minor league contract?
Jason Martinez
5:54
You should call your agent. He got you a MiLB deal with the Indians a few weeks ago.
