MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: January 25, 2017

Their rotation is so good that they just need the offense and bullpen to be adequate for them to contend. Right now, I'd say the bullpen is not. Adding Blevins/Romo would fill that void. Offense could still use a corner OF.

What's my next move?
Jason Martinez
5:23
Either filling out the rotation with a guy who used to be really good (Peavy or Weaver) or signing either Erick Aybar or Stephen Drew.

Any trade candidates for the twins going into the season or in the near future?
Jason Martinez
5:26
Not going into the season, especially now that the Dodgers passed on Dozier. Leading up to the trade deadline, though, I can see Dozier, Ervin Santana and any other veteran pitchers who are pitching well drawing interest. Gibson, Santiago, Pressly, May, Kintzler are all candidates, but they'd have to be having really good seasons.

Will Moncada stay at second or will he shift to 3rd or the outfield?
Jason Martinez
5:28
I think he gets every chance to stick at 2B. Getting too close to the majors to be moving around. Sox will want him to get as many reps as possible at the position he'll play in the majors. Unless he looks really bad early on, I think he's at 2B to stay.

Are you at all excited for the WBC this year?
Jason Martinez
5:30
I don't really pay attention to anything that doesn't affect an MLB roster so usually not. In this case, I am a bit excited because I'm working 4 of the 7 days at Petco Park.

When is scott boras going to budge? Will wieters ever sign with us? If so do you think the halos have the talent to get into the playoffs or wild card?
Jason Martinez
5:32
Wieters or not, I don't think they have enough pitching to contend. But, as is the case with most teams, if they can avoid the injury bug, their lack of depth won't be exposed and they could be better than expected.

Should the Pirates sign me stabilize their rotation?
Jason Martinez
5:35
They should if they're not going to trade for Quintana. I think Taillon is ready for the 162-game grind but I don't know if any other young pitchers on the staff are ready. Maybe Kuhl. The point is that they currently only have 3-4 starting pitchers who they can rely on for a full season and their ace, Gerrit Cole, had a sore elbow last season.

Carter seems like a natural fit for the Rays. What are they waiting for?
Jason Martinez
5:37
I think they'd prefer Napoli so they're waiting to see if his price comes down far enough. There aren't a lot of options for these remaining free agents so the Rays can be patient.

What do you think of the Indians signing of Austin Jackson?
Jason Martinez
5:40
Good, low-risk signing. I'm surprised he didn't get a MLB deal. He gives them more OF depth if Brantley continues to have shoulder issues. At the least, he gives them another right-handed bat to platoon with Naquin/Chisenhall and a very good backup CF.

Does Law overrank Atlanta's Prospects? And does Callis under rank? Why are the braves always subject to hate/love
Jason Martinez
5:44
Depends on how you look at it. Their farm is overrated in that they don't have many elite prospects, which is what people expect when there's so much buzz about their system. They're underrated in that people start to think it's not a very good system because they don't have the elite talent that could've put them in the mix for Chris Sale. It's just a very deep system full of good prospects.

Is Jarrod Dyson really a starting LF or is Jerry Dipoto expecting too much?
Jason Martinez
5:47
No one has ever given him the opportunity so I think Dipoto is intrigued by what he can do over a full season. Is he capable of a .340 OBP and 50+ SB? Maybe. But Dipoto has compiled a lot of depth just in case Dyson proves that he's not an everyday guy.

Am i the worst owner in sports history?
Jason Martinez
5:50
I'm a Chargers fan. At least I was a Chargers fan. No one will ever be able to tell me that Dean Spanos isn't the worst owner in sports history, even though I know there are plenty of other awful ones.

5:54
Any predictions on how Byron Buxton fares this year? Big breakthrough or incremental improvement?
Jason Martinez
5:55
There's a reason he was the No. 2 overall pick in the draft out of high school. Huge upside. So when a guy like that looks really comfortable in the majors, even in a small sample (1.011 OPS, 9 HR in final 113 PAs), it's an encouraging sign that the game is starting to slow down for him. I might be optimistic, but this is my 2017 projection for him ... .735 OPS, 26 2B, 11 3B, 18 HR, 26 SB.

5:56
Who are some 1B/DHs that could be on the trade block? C.J. Cron and Matt Adams?
Jason Martinez
5:57
Even if those guys were are on the trade block, there's not much of a market at this time.
5:59
Thanks for chatting everyone. Same time and place next week. Enjoy the rest of your evening.
