Any chance Winker wins ROY?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:28
Sure. I have him penciled in for 520 PAs and probably won't have to face too many LHPs. Needs to avoid an early-season slump to maintain a starting role over Schebler or Duvall, but I think he'll be in the ROY conversation. My current projection ... .278/.347/.457; 19 HR, 25 2B.

Rizzo hinted today that the Nats would like to add some depth to their rotation. Any predictions?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:31
He doesn't need to hint. Their lack of depth is obvious. Even if Fedde takes a big step forward and holds down the No. 5 spot, next in line would be A.J. Cole, Austin Voth (not good in '17), Edwin Jackson, Tommy Milone, Kyle McGowin. I wouldn't rule out a major acquisition (free agent or trade), but there are some decent veterans who could be had for cheap. Chris Tillman, Jason Vargas, Trevor Cahill all come to mind.

CarGo the stop gap for Meadows?!?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:35
I think CarGo would prefer a team that looks more like a playoff contender and I think the Pirates will aim for a much cheaper option. More like Jon Jay, Seth Smith, Andre Ethier or Jose Bautista.

What’s your favorite move Kevin Towers ever made?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:39
KT was the best at picking up useful players off the scrap heap. Gwynn, Hoffman, Ashby, Caminiti, Finley, Hamilton were already on the roster when he was promoted, but he pieced together that '98 World Series team on a limited budget and with no homegrown players aside from Gwynn and Hamilton. His best move was acquiring Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young for Adam Eaton (the pitcher). Those guys were key to the team's 4 straight winnings season ('04-07).
5:41
Crazy that I can name the homegrown talent that came up and made an impact during KTs tenure ('95-09). Peavy, Khalil, ????, ????, Wow, is that it?
5:42
And he still built some pretty good teams with no farm system and no $.

Who gets the starters slot Newcomb or Fried?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:43
I have Newcomb penciled in. If Kazmir or McCarthy aren't healthy, another spot would be available for likely Fried or Gohara.

What type of season do you see Amed Rosario having?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:46
Really bad at times, almost to the point where a demotion is being discussed. And other times, it will be obvious why he was considered one of the best prospects in baseball. This is fine as long as they have a solid, veteran roster around him and he can stay out of the spotlight. But there's only room for one of these youngsters. That's why Dominic Smith is likely to start in AAA and it's why the Yankees won't open the season with 2 rookies (Gleyber, Andujar) in their infield.

I think its a shame Edgar Martinez is still waiting for Cooperation...had he played the field...say 1st base for his career...does he get in by now? Does being mostly a DH hurt his chances??
AvatarJason Martinez
5:50
Maybe and yes, it does hurt his chances because some voters have pretty much said that. Here's the thing, though. He was a 3B and probably could've been a decent 1B. After a few injury-plagued seasons in his early 30s, the Mariners determined that his bat was so important to their lineup that he was valuable enough just sticking him at DH and trying to keep him healthy. He'll get in next year.

5:51
Projection for Amed Rosario?? I feel he can be just as good as Russell, Lindor, Correa...once he acclimates to MLB pitching
AvatarJason Martinez
5:53
This is what I have ... .260/.305/.437; 15 HR, 25 2B, 9 3B, 17 SB, 29 BB, 129 K. Not bad for a 22-yr old in his 1st full season, but keep in mind that he'll look a lot worse than this at times and much better than this at time,

One spot left on your HOF ballot and you are looking at Mussina, Halladay and Schilling. Who gets your final vote?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:54
I'd go with Mussina, although I can easily go with Halladay. And I guess I could make an argument for Schilling if I really had to.

Any chance the Cubs move Heyward to CF and Bryant to RF to give Baez an everyday job @ 3b?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:56
Baez is the 2B. If Heyward moved to CF, it would likely be to accommodate Zobrist or Happ. I don't think they plan on doing this. If they give Almora regular playing time and he struggles, it's much more likely.

Dominic Leone cards closer ?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:57
He has as good a chance as anyone on that roster right now.

5:57
Dilson Herrera is the answer for Mets 2B.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:58
Considering that Reds GM Dick Williams said that Phil Gosselin was likely his backup SS, Herrera might have a hard time making their 25-man roster. And he is out of options, so he could be available.
5:59
That doesn't mean I think he's the answer. I doubt it. But he might be available.

Are the A's a good candidate for Lucroy?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:00
Sure. A's are a potential sleeper in the AL. I think starting rotation is their biggest question mark right now, but it wouldn't hurt to upgrade at catcher.

Who plays 1st base for the Rockies in 2018
AvatarJason Martinez
6:01
I think Ryan McMahon gets over 500 PAs. I have a feeling that Mark Reynolds will return on a very cheap deal, which could push McMahon to AAA. But only for a few weeks, at most. I think he claims the everyday job early in the season, if not on Opening Day.

KT traded talent like Derek Lee too.
AvatarJason Martinez
6:04
It's always OK to trade away an elite prospect in return for an impact player who can turn your very good team into a World Series caliber team. Kevin Brown was a beast and one of the biggest reasons why that team was so good. Would've been nice to have D-Lee, but that '98 season was so memorable and Brown was one of the main reasons.
6:05
OK, gotta run. Same time and place next week. In the meantime, you know where to reach me (@mlbdepthcharts) if you have any other questions.
