MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: January 4, 2017

Jason Martinez

Let's get this Hot Stove chat started.
Tyler
5:02
Tyson Ross to rangers happening? Or not yet.
Jason Martinez
5:02
Talks are "heating up" so I imagine they're in the process of trying to close the deal. If it's a 1-yr deal in the $6-8MM range with incentives, which is what I'm expecting, fan bases from 29 other teams will be wondering why their team didn't sign him to that deal.
Robert
5:03
What do the rays need to be competitive for a wildcard spot?
Jason Martinez
5:04
They need a lot to go right. Pitching staff needs to stay healthy. Wilson Ramos back to pre-injury form in 2nd half. Souza needs to take a big step forward. Duffy needs to bounce back to 2015 form. They need at least one reliever to step up and claim a late inning role.
Donny
5:04
Does Jason Hammel on a one year deal make sense for NYY?
Jason Martinez
5:06
Makes sense for just about every contender. And probably every non-contender, too, even if it's just to give young starters more time in the minors or to flip him at the deadline.
Joe
5:06
Who offers Chicago what they are looking for in return for Quintana?
Jason Martinez
5:08
I think the Pirates and Astros still make the most sense as long as both are willing to offer the elite prospect (Glasnow from PIT, Martes from HOU) to headline the deal. It's a matter of how much they're willing to include in the package. Both teams have the prospect depth to put together enough.
Matthew
5:09
Happy New Years Jason hope all is well, are the Yankees done making moves? Still need some back end pitchers incase our young guys can't hold up.
Jason Martinez
5:11
Happy New Year! I think they're one of several teams looking to add a starting pitcher and waiting for the prices to come down. They have some good young pitchers who could debut in '17 (Chance Adams, Jordan Montgomery, Ronald Herrera) and I think Chad Green and Bryan Mitchell are deserving of a shot. But for a team that expects to be a contender, there is not nearly enough rotation depth.

Mariners fans have heard a lot about Jason Hammel, yet nothing is gaining traction. Is it time to think elsewhere?
Jason Martinez
5:13
This offseason has come to a complete standstill so it's not like names are coming off of the board. Haven't really seen anything like it in the 8 years that I've been working in the industry. Not too many days in the year where nothing happens. I'm guessing it will start picking up again very soon and the M's will add another starter.
Bert
5:15
The Orioles have (obviously) been acting very slowly...what moves can you realistically see them making?
Jason Martinez
5:16
They've had some success with late offseason signings and I think they'll try to wait out the market as long as possible again. The problem is that there appears to be several teams taking the same approach this offseason. With that said, I think they have the biggest need for a corner OF/DH type and so many options available. They'll end up with one of the top guys available at a reasonable rate.
Matthew
5:18
Do the Yankees move headley? What about Gardner?
Jason Martinez
5:19
Not really any teams in need of a 3B and the Yankees don't really have a replacement ready to step in. I can see teams having some interest in Gardner, but don't know if he has much value right now. Still too many options on the free agent market.

Do you see the Blue Jays competing for a playoff spot on the strength of their rotation alone, or do they need to add more bats?
Jason Martinez
5:21
I think that rotation can take them far. But they'll have a tough time getting into the playoffs unless they can add another late-inning reliever and one more impact bat.
Zealin
5:23
Who is the starting left fielder for the Giants? Williamson, parker, or someone else?
Jason Martinez
5:24
Right now, I think it's a Parker/Williamson platoon but my guess is that they sign a veteran to compete with them. I wonder if they'd add a guy like Colby Rasmus if his price is reasonable. They could also go with Eduardo Nuñez in LF and Conor Gillaspie at 3B on occasion.
PaulieLama
5:26
Who will be the White Sox starting C on April 1?
Jason Martinez
5:27
Might be a good spot for a veteran free agent who isn't ready to accept a backup job yet. Chris Iannetta? Nick Hundley? Kurt Suzuki?
Bob
5:29
What kind of production can the Giants expect in left field from Williamson and parker? Something around a combined .260 15hr 20sb? Or is that too high of expectations
Jason Martinez
5:29
I think they've combined for 1 career stolen base in around 300 plate appearances so I wouldn't count on that SB total. But I can see .250 BA with 15-25 HR and 5-10 SB between them.
John J
5:31
Christian Walker on Orioles opening day squad?
Jason Martinez
5:31
I currently have him making the roster. Not sure how he looked out there, but playing mostly in LF last season has helped his chances of winning a bench spot.
Robert
5:32
So new report saying Dozier talks will wrap up within next week (yeah right!) do you see him actually being traded soon then or will he be staying with Twins?
Jason Martinez
5:33
I think they're hoping another team will step up with a better offer than the Dodgers' last best offer. My guess is that Dozier is a Dodger in 2017 and Jose De Leon and one other good prospect will head to the Twins.
Adrian
5:35
Do you see the A's adding a big bat. Trumbo's name has been kicked around but besides him is there anyone else to keep an eye on? Jose Bautista Maybe?
Jason Martinez
5:35
They still have the room to add another bat. I wouldn't count any DH/corner OF.
Harry
5:36
Does Jose Bautista make sense for the Philies?
Jason Martinez
5:37
Maybe on a 1 or 2-yr deal. Ideally, he signs with an AL team where he can DH at least occasionally for the next year or two and then on a more permanent basis after that.
Farq
5:39
Giants have pieces for Dozier?
Jason Martinez
5:39
Not at all unless the Twins really like Joe Panik. And even if they did, Panik is under team control for 4 more years. I'm guessing they want guys with 5-6 yrs of control.
Loyal Royal
5:42
Why are the Royals waiting to trade commodities (especially Hosmer)? The numbers show he's not really better than an average 1B but would fit nicely in the AL East parks. Plenty of low-cost FA that could give 85-90 of the offensive value.
Jason Martinez
5:42
Trading away 1 year of Hosmer in an offseason with a lot of 1B options might not get them much more than if they shopped him at the trade deadline, especially if he was having a great year. With that said, I think the Royals plan on competing for a playoff spot and Hosmer is a big part of their team.
Yaakov
5:44
Who with Storens ability can the Mets afford for their bullpenn?
Jason Martinez
5:44
Not sure what's affordable for them, but there are plenty of free agents who would fit their need. Sergio Romo, Fernando Salas, Neftali Feliz, Greg Holland (probably too expensive), Joe Blanton and David Hernandez all come to mind.
Dave
5:48
What can we expect from Michael Brantley in 2017?
