MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: July 25, 2018

Jason Martinez
4:33
Several trades since last Wednesday's chat ... Brad Hand/Adam Cimber to Cleveland. Zach Britton to NYY. Nathan Eovaldi to Boston. Jeurys Familia to Oakland. Jesse Chavez to the Cubs. Brian Goodwin to KC. Matt Andriese to Arizona. Seung hwan Oh reportedly headed to Colorado. J.A. Happ reportedly close to being traded. Who's next?

4:34
When are these deals for Toronto going to start happening?
Jason Martinez
4:35
Pretty sure their current game has to end before anything is official, but Heyman tweeted that Oh has been removed from the bullpen. And they probably need him. It's 6-6 in the 9th and they've already used 5 relievers.

Are we gonna do anything more? I love the andriese deal by the way.
Jason Martinez
4:37
Under the radar pitcher with 3+ yrs of control. Could move to the rotation at some point, but he's been good out of the 'pen and could be a valuable multi-inning guy. I don't think they're done. Could still add a starting pitcher and maybe another reliever.
Sandy
4:37
You think the pads have ANY chance of actually getting archer or Syndergaard??
Jason Martinez
4:39
As good of a chance as any team. Arguably the best/deepest farm systems in baseball. I'm sure it's just due diligence at this point, but I do think they'll make at least 1 major move prior to '18. Landing a No. 1 starter is their hope.
And you get a Ray’s player,
4:39
Which is the next Ray’s player to be traded?
Jason Martinez
4:40
Probably Romo. Hechavarria and Carlos Gomez are very likely to be traded, although I'm not sure they'll get much back.
Baseball Pickers
4:41
What is your favorite return on relief pitchers dealt so far?
Jason Martinez
4:42
Quality over quantity. Padres getting a Top 15-20 prospect (Francisco Mejia) for 2 relievers was just as impressive as when they got the Red Sox's top pitching prospect for Pomeranz.
Herb
4:42
Felipe Vazquez gettin traded? if so to whom
Jason Martinez
4:43
Doubtful. They've gone from sellers to buyers. They're more likely to add a setup man for Vazquez.

4:44
Any word or guesses on what route St. Louis will take at the deadline?
Jason Martinez
4:47
They're only 5 games out of a WC spot. Unless they drop a few games under .500 and lose ground in that race, I think they'll look to add a pitcher (SP or RP; probably a rental).
alan
4:48
still think Ryas hold on to Archer
Jason Martinez
4:49
I think the offseason is more likely. But you never know how desperate a contending team will get. I didn't think the Indians would give up Mejia for relief help. But they really, really needed to do something. Padres could decide to pay the price for Archer now instead of bidding against more teams in the offseason.
Not Rick Hahn
4:50
No interest in Soria? He has a 0.74 ERA since May 24th. What gives?
Jason Martinez
4:51
I'm sure there is. His value has to be better than they imagined it would be. Lots of relievers on the trade block, though. No chance he isn't traded. Could be a valuable setup man on a contender.
Realmuto to the Brewers
4:52
For Brandon Woodruff, Corey Ray, Zach Brown and Luis Ortiz?
Jason Martinez
4:53
Solid secondary pieces, but they need a legit centerpiece. Gotta think they ask for Hiura or Burnes.
Hendu
4:54
Chance the A's land a starter like Fiers?
Jason Martinez
4:54
That's a good call. They'll get someone like that (veteran rental), if not Fiers.
Jake
4:56
If the Yankees get Happ, do you think they’re done?
Jason Martinez
4:56
Yes. I think they're fine with 1 more starter. What else do they need?
BravesMN
4:57
Any news of the Braves making a trade soon?
Jason Martinez
4:59
No news, but they'll do something. They're lucky to be where they are in the standings with that bullpen. Vizcaino-Minter-Winkler-Carle have been good, but they need at least one reliable arm. I think Moustakas and Eduardo Escobar are good fits. But I imagine they're waiting for the asking price to drop.
Zunino
5:01
Do the Ms need to upgrade catcher? Ie. Realmuto
Jason Martinez
5:01
Maybe, but they probably wouldn't make a change mid-season. And they don't have the prospects to get Realmuto. Could be something they address in the offseason if Zunino doesn't finish strong.
Dodgers?
5:02
Mets and Marlins were apparently scouting the Dodgers Double-A team in Tulsa. Who do you think the realistic targets are? Wheeler from Mets. One of the Marlins relievers? Or a blockbuster for Noah or deGrom?
Jason Martinez
5:04
Marlins' relievers (Barraclough, Steckenrider, Ziegler) are likely targets. Not sure about NYM. Wheeler will be traded, but don't know if Dodgers are looking for a starter.
David Forst
5:05
Besides a starting pitcher, how about a nice rental upgrade in CF for the A's?
Jason Martinez
5:07
Sure. How about Dylan Bundy and Adam Jones? That would be fun.
John
5:07
Are you surprised the Braves havent made any moves? It seems like they’re in a cloud.
Jason Martinez
5:09
Nope. A lot can happen in 6 days. They need bullpen help more than anything and there are a lot of options. So price will likely go down on some of the rentals (Soria, Rodney, Ziegler).
Todd
5:11
Potential relief help targets for Astros?
Jason Martinez
5:11
Maybe someone like Jake Diekman.
Doyle
5:13
Are the Cubs a Syndergaard suitor?
Jason Martinez
5:15
I'm sure most GMs are going to ask about him. Not sure Cubs are in the best position because their farm system isn't great right now. Also because value of 2 of their best prospects is probably down slightly (Alzolay because of a season-ending injury; De La Cruz because of 80-gm suspension).
Blue Jays fan
5:17
Which Jays prospect other than Vlad, Bo, or Jensen projects as being the best player?
