5 days until my favorite holiday! If you need some resources to keep you updated, you can find all of my trade-related content (trade candidates, team needs, prospect tracker) here ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-trade-central-2017/

Why isn't Nunez joining the Sox til Friday?
Jason Martinez
4:35
Sounds like they'll use him in a super-utility role and he wasn't likely to start today so not a bad idea to take his time and get things sorted out before joining the team on Friday. Even Anthony Swarzak is taking an extra day before joining the Brewers.

Do you think Cozart stays with the Reds and signs a new contract and gets traded next year?
Jason Martinez
4:39
Sure, it's possible. I think he stays with the Reds this year. Not enough teams in need of a SS and he's having a good enough season that giving him a qualifying offer ($18MM) wouldn't be all that outrageous. It would also give them a chance to negotiate a long-term deal before they have to settle on a 1 yr, $18MM deal.

Would you rather have Gray or Darvish if you're the Dodgers?
Jason Martinez
4:42
Darvish. He'd cost less since he's a rental. Plus, he could make them the World Series favorite as long as Kershaw can get healthy.

Will both Britton and Brach be dealt? If not who's the more likely one to be dealt?
Jason Martinez
4:45
Don't think so. Most contenders need late-inning relief but there are a lot of good relievers available. Doesn't seem like they're willing to go all out with a "fire sale" so they'd want one of those guys to close in '18. I think they're listening on Britton in case someone blows them away with an offer.

4:45
If the padres keep me, should they move me to the closer spot, or the rotation? Doesn't make much sense to keep me and not increase my role/value.
Jason Martinez
4:46
Staying in late-inning relief role. Value is already very high. If they don't trade him by Monday, they'll be able to shop him to 29 teams in the offseason. Moving him back to a starting role is risky. Didn't work out too well for Maurer last spring.

Do you see the Cubs getting Verlander and Wilson/Avila in package?
Jason Martinez
4:49
I don't see too many teams interested in taking on Verlander and the remaining $ on his contract. I think it's close to $70MM thru 2019. The Cubs, however, have a ton of $ coming off the books after this season. I think they're the favorite for both Verlander and Avila.

What haul would you expecting the A's to receive for Gray and Alonso if they are traded to the Yankees?
Jason Martinez
4:52
Pretty sure A's are asking for Clint Frazier or Gleyber Torres as the centerpiece of the deal. I think the Yankees will say no to that and it's up to the A's to decide if there is enough value with the Yankees' second tier of prospects, who are also very good. Dustin Fowler, Jorge Mateo, Chance Adams, Estevan Florial. Maybe even Greg Bird can be part of a package.  If they A's really, really like 2 of those guys, I think something gets done.

What do you think of the return the Giants got for Nunez? Thanks Jason.
Jason Martinez
4:56
Hard to tell with low-level guys. 3rd Round pick from last season seems like he could move quickly and has mid-rotation potential. I'm sure the 17-year kid has some upside. And it sounds like Nuñez wants to return to the Giants in the offseason.

4:58
Do you see Twins dealing for a reliever before the deadline?
Jason Martinez
4:58
I would think so. Perkins is on a rehab assignment and Kintzler/Rogers have been great but I think they need one more reliable arm. Maybe they bring back Pat Neshek.

Friars  posturing when they say Hand stays?
Jason Martinez
5:00
Of course. Every player has a price. Padres just have some leverage because his value won't dip much, if at all, in the offseason.

Would Raimel Tapia be enough to get my Rockies a good rental reliever like Reed or Neshek?
Jason Martinez
5:02
Way more than enough, which is why the Rockies wouldn't do that. Only way Tapia is traded is if it's for a starter or late-inning reliever with years of club control. Rockies have a deep enough farm system to get Reed or Neshek without trading anyone close to the Majors.

Long time Cards fan seriously wondering if Mo is incapable of making a pure baseball trade without a real baseball man at his side. Since Tony left he has whiffed more than connected on his trades. Tell me how it will be different this time.
Jason Martinez
5:07
Acquiring Gyorko seems to have worked out great, but he hasn't traded very much. The roster is constructed mostly of homegrown players and there are some good ones on the way. I think that's just the philosophy that's worked out for them for so many years. I don't think he'll overreact and go in a different direction because they're having a semi-disappointing season.

5:07
No Justin Upton chatter? Would more teams be interested if it were known that he would opt out or if it were known that he would opt in?
Jason Martinez
5:09
Right. He's having a good enough season where there's at least a chance he opts out. I think Upton for 2 months is a lot different than Upton for 4+ years. Teams don't really know what they're trading for so hard to place a value on him.

The Astros outrighted Ashur Tolliver off the 40 man roster yesterday and have not yet announced a corresponding move; does this happen often? How long does it normally take to replace a spot on the 40 man roster after someone is outrighted?
Jason Martinez
5:11
He wasn't on the 25-man roster so there's no corresponding move. It just opens up a 40-man spot. They probably just assumed he'd get through waivers unclaimed at this particular time.
Brian Srabean
5:13
Who do the Giants sell off at the deadline?
Jason Martinez
5:14
I think they'll try to trade Hunter Strickland and will listen on Dyson and Kontos, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were done after the Nuñez trade. Cueto would've been the big name they were shopping but his blister problems and big contract (that he probably won't opt out of anymore) will scare teams away.

5:16
What would it take for the dodgers to get stroman from blue jays???
Jason Martinez
5:16
They'd have to start with 1 of the guys they really don't want to trade (Verdugo, Buehler) and maybe both.
Joseph Gallo Jr.
5:17
do you think a Derek Fisher + nets the Astros Sonny Gray? seems like a good fit for Oakland
Jason Martinez
5:19
He could be part of a package but I don't think he'd be the best prospect in that deal. I think 2 of Fisher, Franklin Perez, Kyle Tucker, Francis Martes and Garrett Whitley would be necessary to include in a deal for Gray.

5:25
What do you think of Ron Fowler saying the Padres could hang on to Brad Hand?  Is his trade value at a high point right now?
Jason Martinez
5:26
I think the owner should stay out of baseball operations, although saying "they could hang on to Hand" is an obvious statement. They will probably trade him because he has so much value to a contender (multi-inning, lefty setup man who gets righties and lefties out).
Non-Martinez Jason
5:29
Justin Wilson is one of the most valuable lefty relievers out there.  Is it too much to think he returns a package akin to what Chapman brought last year?
Jason Martinez
5:29
Don't think so. Chapman has the track record and reputation as a shutdown closer. Wilson has been a good reliever for a few years but seems to have taken it up a notch in his age-29 season. He is signed thru '18, which helps his value, but I don't think he's even getting a Top 50 prospect. Maybe not a Top 75 prospect.
